every new user being shocked that DMs aren’t actually private is kinda scary because it means that everybody just assumes DMs on other platforms are private

because they aren’t. the only difference between fedi and other social media is that fedi admins don’t have a vested interest in making you think DMs are private

“oh by the way we’re trying to mandate backdoors into every encryption scheme”
“we are forcing google, apple, and microsoft to stop locking down their ecosystems!”

oh don’t worry, discord won’t shut down. it will just gradually enshittify more and more as it keeps trying to make more money as the vc funds dry up, eventually being bought by a large corporation looking to sell the user data for a nice profit.

then once it gets bad enough, another centralized, proprietary platform will pop up that promises to be slightly better than discord (at least, better than discord after its gradual decline), people will move to it in droves, and the cycle will start all over again

discord will continue to stick around for a couple more years after that, until the company that bought it decides it’s not worth running anymore and unceremoniously shuts it down, destroying over a decade worth of people’s memories in the process

STOP DOING THREADS

  • POSTS WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE SPLIT INTO 25 PARTS
  • YEARS of POSTING yet NO REAL-WORLD USE FOUND for a low character limit
  • Wanted a low character limit anyway for a laugh? We had a tool for that: It was called “SMS”
  • “My post got so long that I had to split it into 10 parts. Stay tuned for the 20 part sequel” - Statements dreamed up by the utterly Deranged

LOOK at what Mastodon Users have been demanding your Respect for all this time, with all the Fediverse and protocols WE built for them:

ok i don’t really like doing this but i’ve gotten two dms now in two days so:
we’ve gotten a couple dms now, all saying “hi” or “hello”, from new accounts that have links to a fundraiser for lgbtq people in the kakuma refugee camp. this camp is real, and i have no doubt that there are people there who need help, but we have serious doubts that these specific fundraisers will ever result in aid for the people there.

this cropped up on reddit last year, and mods from a couple large queer subreddits spoke up about it likely being a scam:

the account that DMed us a couple days is gone now (whether it was suspended or deleted, we don’t know), but the profile is still cached on our instance, and it links to the same fundraiser, organised by someone in
rome? which is all pretty suspicious and lines up with the behaviour of these accounts on reddit as well

to be clear: yes, mutual aid in general is a good thing! but this specific situation reeks of being a scam, from the fresh accounts to history on other websites.

please, be careful with fundraisers that are posted by people who aren’t established, real users

why not join the :sparkls: fediverse :sparkls: we’ve got great software such as:

  • twitter 2.0 wannyabe that refuses to add any of the features people want
  • bloated javascript hell
  • fork of bloated javascript hell that gave up on the rust rewrite 3 functions in
  • another fork of bloated javascript hell made out of pure spite
  • functionyal spaghetti code that is barely maintained
  • fork of said spaghetti code that is also barely maintained
  • alpha software that is somehow more stable than everything else (but it’s not like that’s a high bar)

the five stages of grief, illustrated by PROGRAMMING:

denial: “maybe if i keep changing the code slightly, it will magically fix itself!”

anger: “WORK YOU STUPID DUMBASS FUCKING CODE IT WORKED FIVE MINUTES AGO WHY DOESN’T IT ANYMORE”

bargaining: “how many infants do i need to sacrifice to delete this library from existence?”

depression: “you know what, maybe this is just a metaphor for life
everything will go wrong and there is nothing i can do to ever fix it”

acceptance: rm -rf ~/src

why not host a fedi instance? we’ve got:

  • slow ruby server with dozens of undiscovered severe security advisories
  • the world’s flashiest and heaviest frontend, now with actual built in video games
  • unmaintained spaghetti code
  • unmaintained spaghetti code TWO
  • go (derogatory) (actually it’s pretty stable) (but has even fewer features than mastodon)

periodic reminder that you don’t need to be tech illiterate or stupid to fall for a scam

scams prey on people who aren’t paying attention to the small details, and there’s plenty of reasons someone might do that. yes, tech illiteracy plays a part, but so does stress, coincidences lining up, and weariness

anyone can get scammed. don’t assume you’re “too smart” to fall for it
