Hello everyone, it's Friday! We have a new story for you:

Although hormone therapy has helped menstruators regulate their periods and avoid pregnancies when used as intended, women in India have been coerced to take these pills to "purify" themselves to attend religious functions.

PERSPECTIVE: When Manasvi Verma moved over 8,000 miles from New Delhi, India to St. Louis, she ate less of her Dadi's kadhi, but more of her roommate's mom's chicken noodle casserole. How has that changed her from the inside out and the outside in?

Hello everyone, it's Friday, and we got a shoutout in @niemanlab Predictions for Journalism, 2024!

From our real-time line-item budget to completely rebuilding our audience on Mastodon and supporting a young, diverse crop of journalists, we've shown time and time again that we are the future of news. We're glad that our effort is recognized by Michael Greshko and the Nieman Lab.

“We're starting to see flickers of this DIY energy within corners of science media. The nonprofit Gen-Z newsroom The Xylom, founded by Alex Ip, covers subjects such as climate and COVID- 19 through a distinctly global lens; by its measure, it's the only North American news outlet that regularly publishes science stories in Nepali.”

NEW: Nigeria has reduced its gas flaring by a third since 2019. But that is a function of reduced oil production levels, not of any regulatory success.

Ekpali Saint speaks to Niger Delta residents who are bearing the brunt of environmental health impacts:

Every year, gas flaring costs Nigeria $450M in unpaid fines and energy that could've powered a country with 40% of residents lacking access to electricity twice over.

Despite all this and ecological devastation, some of the worst offenders are insulated from the consequences. The Nigerian Agip Oil Company has been flaring in Ogboinbiri since the 80's. Yet, until this September, it was a subsidiary of Italian energy giant Eni.

But we’re not done yet. The national funders behind NewsMatch have given us one more challenge: Can you help us reach another $1,000 by midnight TONIGHT?

NEW: The Indigenous Ogiek tribe in Southwest Kenya has successfully fought a decade-long legal battle to stop the Kenyan government from illegally evicting them from the Mau Forest and flipping the land for an alleged carbon credit trading scheme.

Yet, the Kenyan Forest Service has ignored rulings, going as far as setting fire to Ogiek huts this past November.
