Just added "boost for reach" to my Mastodon blacklist. You're welcome.

ultrasquid,

@jwz the fact that asking for boosts isn't banned on all major instances already is insane to me.

The key to fighting pseudoscience isn’t mockery—it’s empathy

Evidence shows that shoving data in peoples’ faces doesn’t work to change minds.

ultrasquid,

@arstechnica A few months ago, the creator of "Birds aren't Real" (a meme conspiracy theory) did a TED talk about his own experiences, and came to the exact same conclusion. Conspiracy Theories arise from loneliness, and a need for a community. Mockery and alienation drives them deeper down the rabbit hole.

It's hilarious to still see takes like this - Windows Central

"Don't buy a Steam Deck, if you want a gaming handheld buy an ROG Ally — here's why"

There's so many problems with that article it's just funny, and sad.

While yes, Windows 11 out of the box can do some things SteamOS can't - entirely fair.

It makes out like SteamOS can't do things a PC can. Like word processing, web browsing, installing other stores etc.

ultrasquid,

@gamingonlinux I saw that article in my news feed awhile back. I didn't click on it, because I figured it was either ragebait or paid for.

Anyone got any recommendations for fantasy novels? I was a big fan of Percy Jackson when I was younger and more recently read Mistborn and really liked it, and am interested in finding something similar.

Reminder: using other people's work without consent or permission is something we as humans do all the time, and can be ethical in many contexts. Please don't buy into the copyright maximalist position that every use must require permission.

And yes, this is about AI, and no, I am unsure whether AI scraping is ethical. But we cannot let distaste for AI chip away at the small space we've painstakingly carved out for fair, ethical, permissionless use.

ultrasquid,

@luis_in_brief this is Mastodon, you aren't allowed to have a fair or informed take on AI here.

Sounds good, but the only Steam Family Sharing update I want to see is:

  • No longer locking the ENTIRE library if a family member is playing a completely different game to what you want to play

That has always pissed me off about it.

ultrasquid,

@gamingonlinux all I want is the ability to transfer games from my dad's account to my own. Even Nintendo lets you do this.

ultrasquid,

@gamingonlinux I still wouldn't make a game with unity in the future, but this is great news for developers who are late into development of a game and couldn't change the engine without spending a lot of time or money.

I don’t know if recent NVIDIA drivers, or a recent update to the Linux kernel did this, but battery life on standby on my laptop (12rh gen intel + RTX3050Ti) has improved significantly!

Usually, if I left it on suspend overnight, it drained about 20% of its battery. Yesterday it lost something like 6%!

ultrasquid,

@thelinuxEXP this sounds like good news, I'm getting a refurbished laptop later today and I'm sure not leaving Windows on it.

I was trying to convince an old Twitter friend to join Mastodon and they were like “well, how many followers do you have on Mastodon?” and I thought about it and realized that’s one of the problems with the Twitter mentality.

On Mastodon—I don’t have any followers—I have friends.

ultrasquid,

@Alice I have neither on either platform

Things I have been told to do on Mastodon:

-follow more people

-follow less people

-put content warnings on anything related to politics

-put content warnings on anything related to dogs (seriously)

-use alt text to translate my posts into French

-delete my Patreon because I don't deserve to make money

-sell merch with my facts on them because I deserve to make more money

-stop doing satire because it is enabling fascism and will get Trump reelected

Moral of the story: I have no idea.

The new home feed does border on the algorithmic side, but you will have full control over that, and we'll make it super transparent, the classic chronological feed will remain the default!

ultrasquid,

@dansup maybe an unpopular opinion here but I really like this. Its really hard to find accounts to follow on the fediverse right now, cause unless you're really into politics there isn't much of a way to find others with similar interests.
