BBC: Saudi forces 'told to kill’ to clear land for eco-city https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-68945445

ai6yr,

Per BBC: "Saudi authorities have permitted the use of lethal force to clear land for a futuristic desert city being built by dozens of Western companies, an ex-intelligence officer has told the BBC.

Col Rabih Alenezi says he was ordered to evict villagers from a tribe in the Gulf state to make way for The Line, part of the Neom eco-project.

One of them was subsequently shot and killed for protesting against eviction. "

EURYTHMICS - 1984 (For The Love Of Big Brother)

https://emcritic.blogspot.com/2014/03/eurythmics-1984-for-love-of-big-brother.html

This movie (and the year it was released) is now forty years old. That's older than than the gap between when the book was written and the year it was based upon! Are we more of a society now than what Orwell envisioned? I don't know about that, but our current music sure isn't as cold and heavy as heard here.

I know Amazon warehouse jobs are notoriously dehumanizing, but they pay the bills for those desperate for jobs. Let's just replace more people so they can't make a living without providing for them, right? Labor is expensive. If this works, you can buy your own warehouse bot! Yay. @RustyBertrand of course, despite the headline hype, there is more to it than that. They want to discourage pigeons and simply suggesting people don’t subsidise them in the middle of the city doesn’t work.

@bobjonkman @dyckron Thanks for your interest!

LeadNow.ca have a new Exec Director and have named 4 strategic goals. Now preparing to set up volunteer action groups on:
▪ climate change (timely actions as opp arises)
▪ housing affordability
▪ taxing corporations (windfall, profiteering, excess profits)
▪ fight for progressive values in the next federal election

I hope to work on the last one :-)
Of course all 4 overlap.

Get on their mailing list to hear how things progress (pun intended) 😉

GlowingLantern,

@davidaugust This implies that doing nothing is good. Unfortunately, it’s more like a vortex.

Edit: If it’s a roundabout, where did we come from? That’s the question we should be asking. 😋

@ai6yr Yup, the people we should really trust for sustainability are the people who amassed so much money and other resources to squat on while thousands upon thousands of people in the US are homeless. Yup, rich people know better.

Bongolian,

George Bass: A 1993 dystopian novel imagined the world in 2024. It’s eerily accurate. Octavia Butler’s ‘Parable of the Sower’ predicted devastating climate change, inequality, space travel and ‘Make America great again’

"The effects of climate change are reshaping America. Those with sufficient resources retreat inside protected communities. Those with even greater resources finance an exploratory Mars mission, presumably in an attempt to one day escape Earth’s destabilization.

In the political realm, a populist presidential candidate denounces claims made by scientists, promising the electorate that he’s going to “return us to the glory, wealth, and order of the twentieth century.”

This is life in 2024."

Reality really is turning more and more into some kind of shitty cyberpunk ...

The cars now have some kind of rear-projection screen in their rear windows and show ad or news on it when parked.

Got really confused at first when walking past this...

steely_glint,
@steely_glint@chaos.social avatar

@elmo Some years back I did security mentoring for startups on an accelerator in Berlin.

One of them was pitching a rental car that acted as a wifi hotspot and as a mobile billboard.

I asked them if they had considered the possibility of it being hacked and the adverts being suborned.

They felt it was unlikely - I told them it was a near certainty in Kreuzberg and that at minimum the should put an air-gap between the wifi and the advert !

Two days ago, I went to an especially dangerous place, with an and special prescription glasses designed to keep surrounding air out of my eyes. I snorted not one but two different kinds of nasal sprays immediately after, and gargled with CPC mouthwash.

There I wound up closer to an unmasked person who had obviously been sick than I’d been since 2020. Sniffles and throat clearing, and standing right next to me.

It was the nurse at my doctor’s office.

@PhDHealthPR @edsuom Privilege. More specifically, previous privilege has insulated a lot of people, particularly white folk in admin, doctors, etc, from ever challenging their presuppositions.

So, its a combination of: 1) wanting to ameliorate any discomfort Covid precautions generate within them through denial, 2) a naivete as to CDC and politically motivated nonscience-based decisions , and 3) classic groupthink.

At least imho.
