“Hello, I’m calling to demand that OSP staff end their persecution of Malik Muhammad #23935744, who is bravely on hunger strike to protest being held in torturous conditions in solitary confinement. OSP staff are violating his human rights and have a legal responsibility to provide him with adequate living conditions. OSP staff must immediately provide him with a bed, a blanket, adequate clothing, reasonable room temperature, and any other medical needs he has due to his health conditions. OSP staff must also immediately return his rightful property to him and restore his communication and visitation rights. End this injustice against Malik now!”

a profile picture of Malik with his hair in braided locs. 2020 uprising rebel and political prisoner Malik Muhammad is currently being held in solitary confinement. Prison staff took away all of his property and put him in a cell with no bed, no blanket, and no shirt. He has a slipped disk in his back and previous shoulder injuries that make sleeping on the hard floor torturously painful, and he cannot be sleeping without a bed. Prison staff have also been blasting the AC in his cell nonstop and kept it punishingly freezing. Malik has been on hunger strike since May 13 and will continue until prison staff give him a bed and blanket and return his rightful property to him.

The bad news:
Shabana Mahmood, the Labour shadow justice secretary thinks the solution to the UK prison problem is to build more prisons....

And while she is right, 'Change will not happen overnight... We cannot wave a magic wand & return our legal system to its former glory'... lets hope at least the mood music will change quickly!

@ChrisMayLA6 To some extent she's right: the UK's prisons are chronically overcrowded and run-down. We need more prisons BUT we also need to reduce the number of people in prison (whether by increasing use of non-custodial sentences, stopping prosecuting victimless crimes, or improving (reducing) recidivism rates by repairing the probation service).

Of course, guess which element gets the headlines from our rabidly authoritarian and ugly press?

Criminal Law FAQs by @Teri_Kanefield is a lot more interesting than it sounds.

The list of consequences for Trumpian lawbreaking is huge.

The chart of international high-proportion prison populations alone is shocking.

The recidivism stats for the US prison system are conclusive.

Penalties only deter generally law-abiding folks. Criminals and outlaws have sufficient reasons to ignore laws.

Today in Labor History March 29, 1951: Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage. They were executed at Sing Sing in 1953. The Rosenberg’s sons, Michael and Robert Meeropol (adopted by Abel Meeropol, the composer of “Strange Fruit,”), maintained their parents’ innocence. However, after the fall of the Soviet Union, decoded Soviet cables showed that their father had, in fact, collaborated, but that their mother was innocent. They continued to fight for the mother’s pardon, but Obama refused to grant it. The Rosenberg’s sons were among the last students to attend the anarchist Modern School, in Lakewood, New Jersey, before it finally shut its doors in 1958.

Today in Labor History March 20, 2000: Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, formerly known as H. Rap Brown, was arrested for murdering a Georgia sheriff’s deputy. Al-Amin had been a member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and the Black Panthers. He once said that “violence is as American as cherry pie.” Al-Amin denied shooting the deputy. His fingerprints were not found on the murder weapon. He had no gunshot wounds, though officers who were present at the shootout claimed that the suspect had been hit and wounded. Another man, Otis Jackson, later confessed to being the shooter, but the authorities have repeatedly denied Al-Amin’s requests for a retrial. He is now serving a life sentence. He had been at Florence supermax, under a gag order preventing interviews with journalists. In 2014, he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. He is now at the U.S. Penitentiary, Tucson. In April 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear his appeal from al-Amin.

Strongman rule is a fantasy.
Essential to it is the idea that a strongman will be your strongman.
He won't.
In a democracy, elected representatives listen to constituents.
We take this for granted, and imagine that a dictator would owe us something.
But the vote you cast for him affirms your #irrelevance.
The whole point is that the strongman owes us #nothing.
We get abused and we get used to it.

Another illusion is that the strongman will unite the nation.
But an aspiring dictator will always claim that some belong and others don't.
He will define one group after another as the enemy.
This might feel good, so long as you feel that you are on the right side of the line.
But now #fear is the essence of life.
The politics of us-and-them, once begun, never ends.

We dream that a strongman will let us focus on America.
But dictatorship opens our country to the worst the world has to offer.
An American strongman will measure himself by the #wealth and #power of other dictators.
He will befriend them and compete with them.
From them he will learn new ways to #oppress and to #exploit his own people.

At least, the fantasy goes, the strongman will get things done.
But dictatorial power today is not about achieving anything positive.
It is about #preventing anyone else from achieving anything.
The strongman is really the weak man: his secret is that he makes everyone else #weaker.

Unaccountable to the law and to voters, the dictator has no reason to consider anything beyond his own personal interests.
In the twenty-first century, those are simple: 👉 dying in bed as a billionaire.
To #enrich himself and to stay out of #prison, the strongman dismantles the justice system and replaces civil servants with loyalists.
