👀”At least 66 members of an anti-govt group founded by far-right militia figure Ammon Bundy have attempted to win local positions of influence in Republican party in #Oregon.

The candidates stood for GOP precinct committee person (PCP) slots in 3 central Oregon counties in this week’s elections, w some facing no opponent & thus winning their positions by default. The role of PCPs includes electing the executive of the county-level GOP apparatus”

Out in the middle of nowhere is actually somewhere: it's a landscape surrounded by space, and within that space one can walk around outside in one's bathrobe -- or not even that if you please -- and not be seen by the neighbors.

You don't hear their TV or music. No loud cars, or sirens. No shouting, flashing lights, LED advertisements in your face.

That's someplace worth being.

Good news! I l love Oregon's system ❤️

Attached is a good quote from the story:

@GottaLaff Thank goodness, this Oregonian loves our vote by mail system.

The crazy part is that vote-by-mail in Oregon was popular with both Republicans and Democrats until 45** started yapping about fictitious voter fraud.

🚨 Reminder:

Tomorrow is election day for Oregonians. Ballots must be taken to a drop box or postmarked by 8 PM Tuesday, May 21.

All registered voters should have received voters' pamphlets and ballots automatically (I love our vote by mail system ❤️) but here's your reminder in case you stashed them somewhere and forgot.

Local elections can have a big impact!

I spent the morning doing my research and voting at home 😁

Finished my ballot to drop off tomorrow (VOTE BY MAIL IS THE BEST, at least as long as the US refuses to make voting easier across the board). My primary ballot is Democrat, but the packet they send includes all candidates. A number of Republican state lawmakers were disqualified from running again after walking out of too many sessions last year. It is truly disquieting how many of them are running for other (even higher) offices. November scares me for so many reasons.

aehdeschaine,
@aehdeschaine@zirk.us avatar

In a related matter, there is a page in the packet giving tips on safety when you go to ballot drop-off sites. What a world of civic engagement.

@aehdeschaine Wow, I had missed that page until you mentioned it ☹️

hey , turn in your ballots!

in my county we have a moderate running against a J6 dingbat county councilman -- you might have a similar opportunity to improve your community, and given current voter turnout, you could have a disproportionate impact

this weekend is a great time to get that vote in the mail

Hey, just in case anyone in my extended #Oregon family (hi y'all!) doesn't already know: Republican Jeff Gudman has switched parties and is running in the #DemocraticPrimary as a Democrat this year, after getting iced in the general election (running as the Republican candidate) a few times over the past decade. Fiddle while the economy burns and everybody becomes homeless, then give the homeless air conditioners that they can't use. Yep, that's a bureaucracy, all right.

CelloMomOnCars,
@CelloMomOnCars@mastodon.social avatar

@argv_minus_one

Still: giving someone an AC unit or air filter can keep them healthy during a heatwave or smoke emergency, quite apart from being cheaper than paying for their ER visit.

The systemic way: force landlords to build thermally resilient apartment buildings. But you can't wait for that to happen.

Since this is critical infrastructure for , you'd think the State would subsidize it.

"The Port of Portland says it cannot afford to keep the state’s only shipping container terminal open past September after a deal with a third-party operator fell through. Despite more business, costs have gone up, pushing the port’s container facility into the red.
The Port of Portland has lost more than $30 million during the past three years, the agency stated in a news release in March. That includes a projected $14 million shortfall for this year."

"The loss marks a blow to the region’s economy and makes Portland the largest city on the West Coast without close proximity to container service. "
