I have a weird fascination with HOA’s, they seem like such a weird thing to me. I have never lived anywhere where there is an HOA and never would but I enjoy hearing stories about them. Are you guys pro or anti HOA’s? Or no opinion? Any good stories?

We’re in Colorado, and there are state laws here that regulate and tend to prevent a lot of the egregious behavior of the HOAs that get all the publicity. Again, perfect? No. Good enough? Yes. As always, your mileage may vary.
@Green_Footballs The very whacked American idea of free speech. Every kid grows up knowing that they can't say whatever they want without consequence. Adults now not only expect to be able to mouth off however they want, with no consequence, but feel they deserve an audience. He is the worst: money, power, arrogantly thinking that his way is the only way, and way too much influence. Delusions of grandeur.
Society is increasingly a series of more and more obvious and exploitative scams that we're tacitly "required" to participate in, but guess what? No one's actually required to have their music there and if everyone stops, they can't run their scam any more.
It's especially easy for most of the people who will see this to pull your music; I'm willing to bet most of you are making, at best, a few hundred a year, maybe a couple thousand if you're very lucky.
And for the non musicians that see this, please consider discontinuing your use of Spotify. It's incredibly exploitative to the musicians whose music you're enjoying (unless you're only listening to the most popular acts on the service).
Honestly, even piracy is better for most musicians: at least that's not enriching someone else at their expense.
Spend your money on music as close to the source as possible. The Internet makes it possible to put money directly in most musicians' pockets.
@daringfireball There is a rule in comedy which says the audience will laugh at anything, but not when something on stage breaks. I cringed all through it, and especially when the camera lenses shattered and the escaping m&m .. ruptured. This was a failure of comedy, regardless of whatever reasons people are coming up with post hoc. Uncool, maan.
@daringfireball The commercial immediately made me cringe. I would definitely had the same feeling if they would use this commercial for iPad 2. The same with the ‘mother earth’ video for example. It was cheap humor and tasteless. I would not be surprised if this is due to Tim’s way of thinking or uncertainty to kill these marketing ideas. Would be interesting to see what happens when Tim is replaced.
The problem with outsourcing your chat or forum to third parties is that you don't own them. That is correct
The problem with self hosting those things yourself is that 1. nobody will use them because why aren't you just using this 3rd party app that everyone is already using and 2. have fun doing your own spam control

That launched me into making my first Doom maps in early 2021, and I've been in a cozy little Doom community ever since.

The point is that the normal function of human beings was tidily packaged for people who were automatically something less, and the argument between the haves and have-nots continues because of selfishness. Selfishness is a cultural problem that wasn't solved by fancy talk.

@JamesGleick they will arrest you, but the supreme Court will say that it wasn't actually a bribe unless the bag has a giant cartoon dollar sign on it and you then took it and were still holding it in your hand as you cast a vote or signed an executive order. Otherwise, the supreme Court has said that that is just sparkling politics and there's nothing illegal about it.

I think these protesters have failed the guidelines of: collection of the facts to determine whether injustices exist; negotiation; self-purification; and effective direct action.

Bicycle stores in West LA, mostly. Looks like the (theoretical contingency) plan would be to hoof it to the nearest bicycle store, buy a bicycle (if they would even sell one) and then pedal all the way home (MTB probably best for terrain). Better odds buying one off an unhoused individual stashing one under a freeway, LOL. -- again, wouldn't expect anything big, but contigency planning always is fun for disasters.
An awkward thing about buying things mail order from USA in Canada is you don't actually wind up paying the import fee. Instead, the shipper has a "broker", who stands there at the border when the package passes over and negotiates a reduced import fee. Then you pay the broker fee. As far as I know, this fee really is reduced usually. But it means you never have any idea how much import you'll be paying, and sometimes something bizarre like this (near 100% import duty) happens.
I call UPS's "international shipping support" to ask if I can appeal this fee. The robot says it cannot connect me with a representative unless I provide an "account number". I say I do not know my "account number". The robot says my "account number" is at the top of my invoice. There is no account number at the top of the invoice. I am not a number. I am a free woman. The robot says "thank you for calling" and disconnects my call.
Vision Pro is going to be an even harder sell now that iPad is two CPU generations ahead of it. You just know too that, like every single first-gen Apple product, it's going to be left behind by OS updates way sooner than you'd hope 😔
