Catlynn, I have a weird fascination with HOA’s, they seem like such a weird thing to me. I have never lived anywhere where there is an HOA and never would but I enjoy hearing stories about them. Are you guys pro or anti HOA’s? Or no opinion? Any good stories?
MLE_online, Lettuce is such a weird looking cat, so my sister and I were trying to figure out what exactly makes her look so odd.
It's definitely something with her eyes, but also her ears point straight up too much.
VE2UWY, Dog person so maybe not the best judge but she seems a pretteh kitteh as she is.
MLE_online, @VE2UWY she is very adorable in her own way, but she's not much of a looker
Green_Footballs, This interview is seriously whacked out, both the questions and Dorsey’s bizarre answers.
He has “a strategy for ending censorship forever!” lol

CStamp, @Green_Footballs The very whacked American idea of free speech. Every kid grows up knowing that they can't say whatever they want without consequence. Adults now not only expect to be able to mouth off however they want, with no consequence, but feel they deserve an audience. He is the worst: money, power, arrogantly thinking that his way is the only way, and way too much influence. Delusions of grandeur.
craiggrannell, @Green_Footballs “Elon does appear committed to openness and freedom of speech”
Ahahahahahahah. No.

thomasfuchs, Gonna enjoy a bananum for breakfast
kbob, @thomasfuchs I prefer the British spelling, bananium.
thomasfuchs, @kbob Ah yes, I’ve heard Jony Ive say that.
etherdiver, Spotify to raise prices, then pay musicians even less.
If your music is on Spotify, why? Are you so successful that you enjoy subsidizing Spotify executives' extravagant lifestyles?
etherdiver, Society is increasingly a series of more and more obvious and exploitative scams that we're tacitly "required" to participate in, but guess what? No one's actually required to have their music there and if everyone stops, they can't run their scam any more.
It's especially easy for most of the people who will see this to pull your music; I'm willing to bet most of you are making, at best, a few hundred a year, maybe a couple thousand if you're very lucky.
Is that worth it? Really?
etherdiver, And for the non musicians that see this, please consider discontinuing your use of Spotify. It's incredibly exploitative to the musicians whose music you're enjoying (unless you're only listening to the most popular acts on the service).
Honestly, even piracy is better for most musicians: at least that's not enriching someone else at their expense.
Spend your money on music as close to the source as possible. The Internet makes it possible to put money directly in most musicians' pockets.
daringfireball, Is the ‘Crush’ Backlash a Dead Canary in the Apple Brand Coal Mine?
https://daringfireball.net/linked/2024/05/09/dhh-crush
vlk, @daringfireball There is a rule in comedy which says the audience will laugh at anything, but not when something on stage breaks. I cringed all through it, and especially when the camera lenses shattered and the escaping m&m .. ruptured. This was a failure of comedy, regardless of whatever reasons people are coming up with post hoc. Uncool, maan.
bartvandebiezen, @daringfireball The commercial immediately made me cringe. I would definitely had the same feeling if they would use this commercial for iPad 2. The same with the ‘mother earth’ video for example. It was cheap humor and tasteless. I would not be surprised if this is due to Tim’s way of thinking or uncertainty to kill these marketing ideas. Would be interesting to see what happens when Tim is replaced.
eniko, The problem with outsourcing your chat or forum to third parties is that you don't own them. That is correct
The problem with self hosting those things yourself is that 1. nobody will use them because why aren't you just using this 3rd party app that everyone is already using and 2. have fun doing your own spam control
Seems like a bit of a damned if you do damned if you don't situation if you ask me
eniko, @indigoparadox @oblomov @spots1000 didn't they steal a bunch of money from devs as they were going down?
jedimb, @indigoparadox @oblomov @eniko @spots1000 I remember how Desura deleted my entire Games folder when I uninstalled it, which led me to having to reinstall Windows entirely as it broke multiple other things as well.
On the plus side:
While I made my backups in preparation for the clean sweep, I was reminded that I had a completely unused installation of Doom Builder 2.
That launched me into making my first Doom maps in early 2021, and I've been in a cozy little Doom community ever since.
QasimRashid, Sr Airman Roger Fortson was at home when cops entered unannounced & shot him dead 6 times.
The cop claimed he acted in self defense when he saw Fortson holding a firearm—which Fortson legally owned. The cop is on admin leave.
How are you going to illegally break into an innocent man's home unannounced & claim self defense? Horrific injustice.

Mary625, This is just so awful and disgusting. Crime of living Black. That's all he did was be alive.
I hope his family sees justice but I won't hold my breath.
tofugolem, @QasimRashid
America is a police state. America is where freedom goes to die.
StillIRise1963, We don’t all need to buy the exact same things that we use occasionally. We should have organized borrowing.
GhostOnTheHalfShell, @YakyuNightOwl @artemis @StillIRise1963
Prolly not, as “Communism” came well after multiple waves of immigration. They’d just have called it a community. Farmers in Europe would share tools and resources.
Amish barn raising was a mundane normality.
YakyuNightOwl, @GhostOnTheHalfShell @artemis @StillIRise1963 No argument at all. The point is that the normal function of human beings was tidily packaged for people who were automatically something less, and the argument between the haves and have-nots continues because of selfishness. Selfishness is a cultural problem that wasn't solved by fancy talk.

JamesGleick, If the bribe you’re soliciting is $1,000 in a paper bag, the FBI will arrest you. If it’s $1 billion in dark money, does that make it legal?
Amoshias, @JamesGleick they will arrest you, but the supreme Court will say that it wasn't actually a bribe unless the bag has a giant cartoon dollar sign on it and you then took it and were still holding it in your hand as you cast a vote or signed an executive order. Otherwise, the supreme Court has said that that is just sparkling politics and there's nothing illegal about it.
RoyBrander, I don't understand why the executives were "stunned".
Was anybody reading this "stunned"?
How come we're better informed than a bunch of CEOs?
Or...just a thought...was a journalist being nice to CEOs? Does that happen?

GreenFire, One clear sign of how ignorant and immature the college protesters are is how they all don't seem to want to be held accountable for the crimes they committed.
I wish that our U.S. campuses would at least still assign students to read MLK's Letter from a Birmingham jail, and Thoreau's essay on Civil Disobedience.
I think these protesters have failed the guidelines of: collection of the facts to determine whether injustices exist; negotiation; self-purification; and effective direct action.
GreenFire, MLKJr: "In no sense do I advocate evading or defying the law, as would the rabid segregationist. That would lead to anarchy. ... I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law."
GreenFire, @HistoPol
I wish that our geopolitical landscape provided the room for us to act like these complex situations were black & white, but I know that they're not because of the history that has brought us to this moment.
ai6yr,
ai6yr, @exador23 Don't get me started!!!! Today was the spouse, but that was because of having to help the daughter with some stuff. 5 (nearly 6 hours) of wasted time, have been working here in parallel to make up the hours...
ai6yr, Bicycle stores in West LA, mostly. Looks like the (theoretical contingency) plan would be to hoof it to the nearest bicycle store, buy a bicycle (if they would even sell one) and then pedal all the way home (MTB probably best for terrain). Better odds buying one off an unhoused individual stashing one under a freeway, LOL. -- again, wouldn't expect anything big, but contigency planning always is fun for disasters.
mcc, I order some Products from the United States.
The cost is $88 CAD.
There's a fixed international shipping cost of $48 CAD. Frustrating, but that is what the shipper has, so okay.
A couple days later, I get an email from UPS asking to pay the import duty fee. The import fee is $51 CAD.
That is more than half the cost of the product itself. I'm overall paying more for shipping+import fees than for the product.
When I moved here I assumed I could buy stuff from USA cheap because of NAFTA :(
mcc, An awkward thing about buying things mail order from USA in Canada is you don't actually wind up paying the import fee. Instead, the shipper has a "broker", who stands there at the border when the package passes over and negotiates a reduced import fee. Then you pay the broker fee. As far as I know, this fee really is reduced usually. But it means you never have any idea how much import you'll be paying, and sometimes something bizarre like this (near 100% import duty) happens.
mcc, I call UPS's "international shipping support" to ask if I can appeal this fee. The robot says it cannot connect me with a representative unless I provide an "account number". I say I do not know my "account number". The robot says my "account number" is at the top of my invoice. There is no account number at the top of the invoice. I am not a number. I am a free woman. The robot says "thank you for calling" and disconnects my call.
FlockOfCats, (edited ) Called an ambulance for this dude. I’m pretty sure he just needed to sleep it off, but not in the street, bro.
Also, I was worried there was a small chance something else was wrong 🤷♂️
But my main concern was leaving him and then finding out the next day he got hit by a car
softicecreamlesley, @FlockOfCats Thanks for being a Good Samaritan. 😇
FlockOfCats,
stroughtonsmith, Vision Pro is going to be an even harder sell now that iPad is two CPU generations ahead of it. You just know too that, like every single first-gen Apple product, it's going to be left behind by OS updates way sooner than you'd hope 😔
cmaciasjimenez, @stroughtonsmith I didn’t even think about that. It’s gonna be rough seeing how good M4 looks😐
frankreiff, @stroughtonsmith always assuming that there will be a 2nd gen. 2026 is a long time off and they don’t want to make big changes..
Catlynn, Haha oh my goodness, they’re so cute. I had almost forgotten about these guys but it’s very nice to have them around again. Itty bitty oak titmouse.

jakmarcin, @vicgrinberg I see! Didn’t know that.
vicgrinberg, @jakmarcin it's a cool app if you are adventurous about food - both in trying new stuff and creating meals with random ingredients fast :D
