Verdens! Bedste! Julefilm!

@dancinyogi
I actually had a manual typewriter. You really had to push each key down hard (and as an 11-year old, that took strength). My Mom saw I was serious at writing and got me a Smith-Corona that had switchable cartridges, one for ink, one for white-out. I really needed that! The keys had a nice feel. My recollection is that I wrote my first novella and my first novel on the machine. After the novella, I was a touch typist. Never took a class.

Soon it was on to a terminal with a typewriter keyboard and a 56K Cat modem to use a time-share computer at university. That seems like so long ago that my memories should be in B&W and sepia-toned.

twizzay,

A friend is offering me a free apple watch.

Im actually hesitant to accept. Idk if I really like the idea of assimilating a computer even closer to my person than my phone already is.

It will probably just be a distraction. But idk. It might be useful.

Wondering what other owners might have to say.

Could still be very wrong, though...

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

I don't think people are realising the danger the Fediverse is in.

The only thing stopping corporations and VCs taking over this place is that the Fediverse is spread out on many different servers, which makes it very difficult to purchase.

If most of the Fediverse ends up on mastodon.social, which is now a strong possibility, there will be nothing to stop most of it being sold to Musk or Zuckerberg or whoever.

The bigger mastodon.social becomes, the more likely a buyout is to happen.

(1/4)

feditips, (edited )
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

Here's what Eugen Rochko's Mastodon gGmbH organisation now controls:

-The Mastodon server software & API (though the current version is FOSS)
-The mastodon.social server, which has 1 in 7 of all Fediverse users
-The official Mastodon apps, now telling people to just sign up on mastodon.social
-The official website at joinmastodon.org
-The trademark for the word "mastodon", which lets them dictate terms to any server which uses it

This is a tempting package for any potential buyers.

(2/4)

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

With all that in mind, here's a suggestion:

➡️ IF mastodon.social becomes more than 50% of the Fediverse, either by total users or monthly active users, the rest of us should defederate it.

Sticking with mastodon.social because "that's where the people are" is pointless. Centralised growth will simply cause the governance problems we've seen on Twitter and Facebook to be replicated on here.

Growth has to be decentralised in order to protect the independence of all Fedi servers.

It's really past time those of us who are educated, and independent of the "professional-managerial class" (as Graeber politely describes it), launched a serious campaign to re-democratise our universities, and put them back in service of independent research and academic freedom.

To quote Graeber:

"Universities are—or, better said, until recently have been— among the only institutions that survived more or less intact from the High Middle Ages. As a result, universities still reflected an essentially medieval conception of self-organization and self-governance; this was an institution managed by scholars for the pursuit of scholarship, of forms of knowledge that were seen as valuable in their own right."

As much as I loved Everything Everywhere All at Once and the Terminator films (and also Alien), the "mother saving her child" thing all the freaking time makes it like that's the only possible motivation a middle-aged woman could have. Miss Marple and Captain Janeway... and some other Star Trek characters are about it.

Also, there's a heavy emphasis on films & TV above, not books.

Reworked all the bridges on the ESD diodes that I found during initial visual inspection, and tidied up a few bulk caps.

Did continuity tests to sanity check on each power rail and nothing is shorted.

Gonna start populating the front side after the little one goes to sleep. Should go faster than the back since it's mostly large ICs not hundreds of 0402s.

Cool observation from high resolution power rail monitoring: the STM32 internal voltage reference drifts slightly with temperature, so as the die warms up after having been off all night the regulated core voltage slowly increases.

Oh I'm sorry you wanted less cable spaghetti? i swear you said you wanted more. I even bought a new roll of ESD tape to wrangle it all.

Got the baseT test fixture cabled up so I can troubleshoot g13's link issues after work, but didn't have time to collect any data yet.

If you haven't seen it before, this is a handy dandy little gizmo consisting of two RJ45 jacks connected back to back by dual directional couplers.

This gives me 16 SMA outputs with 10 dB attenuated views of each of the 8 wires in the twisted pair cable, seen from both directions. I'm using an 8 channel PicoScope 6824E to look at all 8 lines coming out of the DP83867, ignoring the inbound data from the other side.

3/3 Writing reliefs our soul and brains from words we may have never spoken, writing makes us care about words, opens our minds about how words are used or could be understood. Writing is the first step to talk to strangers about your inner world for so many, writing is a window to so many worlds we carry insight us, that otherwise would fade away unseen. Writing is passion, love, frustration, guilt, the wings that carry us through thoughts of others.
Isn't that magic?

This has mostly been reported as "trans women banned from women's chess" but it's much more sinister. (as if it weren't already.)

ALL trans people are targeted by this ruling. Trans men will be stripped of all chess titles won, which can only be returned to them by “changing the gender back to a woman” (from the ICF’s ruling). ALL transgender chess players will be marked as trans in their files.

If you play or know anyone who does take a stand on this. It's ugly.

https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/international-chess-org-trans-women?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email

futurebird,
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

This news has caused some people to ask why "women's chess" even exists -- women can compete in the open tournament. The women's competitions were a recognition of just how far behind chess is when it comes to cultivating and welcoming female players.

Not that shocking they are even more far behind when it comes to even knowing what that would mean. (eg not excluding trans women.)

But all this misses the bigger point. They don't want any trans people at all in their games.

futurebird,
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

I think there are some obvious reasons why thats true.

My brother was pretty good at chess and won some trophies on the school team so I tried to join. (he told me when he joined he didn't even know how to play.)

This ended up being one of the most explicit experiences with sexism in my life! The first time I showed up they pretended I was in the wrong place. "This isn't the chess club it's the Anime club."

I told the advisor who now resented me for making him come to the meetings. 1/

Speed is something demanded of by capitalism. Speed has altered our whole world and not always for the good. Speed is time and time is money for capitalists. Specifically your time, their money. And the faster they can make you go, the more they crack that whip, the more speed you need to survive. You need that newest fastest thing to 'compete'. To look like you are in the race.
They have you on the run in their machinations.
When we should all just STOP running the machine for them.

JoBlakely, (edited )
@JoBlakely@mastodon.social avatar

The faster they make you go, the less likely and the less time you have to learn differently, to research, to develop real understanding. The faster you go, the more tired you get, the more control they have to keep you there. The bar keeps getting lower as they make you more dependent on them. And of course quality or care in everything goes down.
It is no longer about what is made or why, it is about occupation and exploitation of human & planetary resources. Occupation in both meanings.

Simulacrum,

@JoBlakely Their rationale for this is gaslighting as well: “what, you want people to do nothing and live on handouts? If no one works quickly or efficiently, how will society survive?”

Political hypocrisy. They do nothing other than fiddle with the corporate machine while everyone else slaves away—and in addition to indulging in the basic rights and comforts we could all otherwise have right now, they also use their excess wealth to play vain political games and live out morbid fantasies.

Hi, I'm stuck waiting on laundry to finish and am bored, so why don't I come on here and write some hot takes about YouTube?

I mean, I can think of several reasons, but too bad I'll do it anyway.

Knowing the leanings of the folks on this particular platform this is likely to spark some debate, but note that I'm not trying to paint YouTube as a saint - in fact, the first thing I want to talk about is a strategy they've taken which puts me and all YT creators in a weird place:

TechConnectify,
@TechConnectify@mas.to avatar

Seemingly few people know (or understand completely) that YT Premium is a good deal for all parties involved - it kills ads, creators get a cut of the membership, and (in my experience anyway) it neutralizes many of the platform's weird tendencies because serving relevant ads to the viewer is no longer a concern.

I would advocate for it much more strongly (and I say 100% truthfully that Premium views pay me more than ad-supported views do) except YT continues to lump YT music into it.

TechConnectify,
@TechConnectify@mas.to avatar

I have been paying for YouTube Premium since it was called YouTube Red, and I will happily continue to do so.

So many of the "YouTube is getting so much worse" takes I see just... don't apply to me because I haven't seen an ad on the platform in years now.

I would tell you that by signing up for YT premium you should happily think about it as a small Patreon membership for everybody you watch - your money will be sent to those folks split up based on watch time.

But Music complicates this.

We fancy now:
Truff spicy mayo
Kikkoman sweet soy sauce for rice
