Azarilh, They are not.
@svenja
KopfKrieg, German @root42 @stehaufmama @strght Das wäre auch mein Vorschlag. Da hat man zwar immer noch Wartezeiten, aber die tun wenigstens.
zoness, I am losing my mind, it never stops #ads #tech #roku #streaming #enshittification
zoness, @Neblib I host a plex server on Windows on my old gaming pc which acts as a sort of informal file server as well. Should probably just redo it with linux and go the whole way but haven't had time yet.
zoness, @Neblib I swear I was imagining it but my oldest rokus are bordering on unusably slow lately and I am starting to wonder if its because they're loading up more of this resource intensive ad serving garbage
deflockcom,
bedast, If Google is going to be aggressively fighting against ad blocking, they should be held to a far higher, potentially legal, standard for ensuring safe advertisements.
Because one of the really important reasons for using ad blocking is safety from scams and malware. And Google owns THE largest ad network, and it serves malicious ads every day.

wtfrank, I asked google's chatbot Gemini how to remove it and it answered with random arabic phrases 🤣
paul, Microsoft starts testing #ads in the Windows 11 Start menu
Companies won't be happy until every inch of life is monetized with ads.
When my dad passed away in 2022, one gravestone company offered a 5% discount if we allowed them to put their imprint on the back, notating where the gravestone came from. I guess they wanted people who had new funerals to walk past and think "That's a nice tombstone. I'd liked something like that for [The person getting buried]" & see it
https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/12/24128640/microsoft-windows-11-start-menu-ads-app-recommendations
paul, 2/ Microsoft is determined to kill the Windows desktop and convert the Windows 11 desktop into monetization
Latest builds has copilot opening with the Desktop.
Ads are appearing everywhere, now including the Start Menu, some pinned
🔗Microsoft's latest Copilot coercion forced me through the five stages of grief over the death of the Windows 11 desktop
RaymondPierreL3, @paul time to jump ship I think. When my Win10 device shows signs of microsoft interference (it will be coerced to upgrade at some point, forcefully I’ll bet), it’s Linux for me.
Anachron, German Every proprietary product will at some point in time display #ads.
It's a matter of when, not if.

cliffwade, I believe this is a pretty new feature within Kagi Search. You can click on the yellow/orange shield with the exclamation mark in it and you get the popup that you see here.
This popup tells you just how many ads and trackers that specific site uses as well as what category of ads and trackers it uses.
This is one of the neatest things I've seen Kagi Search add so far.
shortwavesurfer2009, @cliffwade I have been using Kagi for a little bit over six months and paying with crypto and really enjoying the service.
cliffwade, @shortwavesurfer2009 Nice. I've been using it for about 3 - 4 months thanks to @jcrabapple recommending it since he uses it, or at least used to use it.
BeAware, For those who own a Roku, it's time to change that.🤦♂️
Idk how they think this is a good business move...
https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/5/24121958/roku-ads-tv-hdmi-inputs-patent-amazon-google
paninid, @BeAware it’s like some people learned of #enshittification and thought, “sounds good, I’ll have that!”
BeAware, @paninid Roku wrote the definition for enshittification, they're altering the definition, prey they don't alter it further.
downey, 🤦♂️ Mozilla has apparently decided to get into the advertising business.
"We are growing the #Mozilla #Ads team to create a digital #advertising platform that is consistent with Mozilla’s principles. As an early member of the product team you will help drive our vision to best serve users and advertisers with effective #privacy respecting ad products."
🤨
jordan_kendrick, @downey I get that ads pay the bills and all, but does anyone really believe a privacy respecting ad product can actually be done?
alcinnz, @jordan_kendrick @downey Personally I reckon it can, but I'll have to see it to believe it.
There'll be plenty of pressure to resist!
majorlinux,
chiasm, @majorlinux ran out of venture capital funding, did it?
majorlinux, @chiasm Looks like it.
ValerieSonh, Study: Most Americans now use ad blockers https://www.theregister.com/2024/03/27/america_ad_blocker/ Notably, 66% of advertising professionals use ad blockers vs. 52% of the general public. #AdBlocker #ads #privacy
PKL, @ValerieSonh Yeah, this tracks. We're now a month or two into turning off all paid advertising for #Ploopy and literally none of the traffic data we can audit directly has registered meaningful negative change.
It's almost as if our users (mostly people who know their way around technology) have effective ways of avoiding ads altogether?!
usluck,
rolle, Fuck yeah I'm blocking ads now and forever. I also use VPN, Tor, NextDNS filtering etc. and I do not appreciate your tone here, sir. I value my privacy and mental health.
Can we please stop these desperate and annoying money-begging tactics?

stefan, My "Detect Missing Adblocker" WordPress plugin is now in active use on 70+ websites!
Do you know how to make a page element look like an ad to various privacy and ad-blocking tools?
I could use your help!

soop, @stefan to instead of blocking people that use adblockers just block people who don't is an amazing idea lmao
stefan, @soop Ah, I wouldn't go as far as blocking those people. The detection is not super reliable, and I don't typically install ad-blockers on work computers either.
It's meant to be more of a gentle reminder.

xro, What's the problem with #ads and #advertisement?
- ads are information
- ads are intentionally incorrect and misleading
- ads are ubiquitous available information, to the point of being actively PUSHED onto every human reachable.
- for many people who don't actively seek other sources, it is the main source of information.
That"s not a good basis for a #democracy where informed citizens are supposed to make good decisions.
xro, I was actually mainly thinking about TV ads, billboards, analog newspaper ads, mailbox leaflets or whole papers that pretend to be a newspaper but are in reality a big ad, 😅
since thanks to AdBlockers, WebAds have seized to be a problem for me.
But you are right, the WWW without AdBlockers is a dangerous and unusable mess. At least here on the Web we have a technical solution against ads.
publicvoit, @xro I see.
Good point and I agree.
ad WWW: I presume that 99%+ aren't using any protection against ads/malware in their browser. Therefore, I consider this (also) a very important threat to the public.

obrien_kat, This ad is really smart and well-done, challenging our assumptions about what people with Down Syndrome can do, and maybe that our assumptions are limiting them (surely true in many other cases too).
nerdeiro, Holy! Shit! That was the bottom of the barrel.
A recruiter contacted me on LinkedIn and asked me to fill a form with some information about my skills.
Only, instead of a direct link, he gave a link to a redirector. With ads...
WITH! BLOODY! ADS!
Sorry, mate. I'm not that desperate. You and your company are on my shitlist. If you're willing to violate my trust from the get go, imagine if I took the job...
