#Threads is testing federation for a few selected profiles. I'm now following @mosseri! It's one-way for now, but it's exciting. It's a step towards the interoperable social web that we've been advocating for 🙂
This is huge, especially when you consider many people, politicians & brands on #Threads will consider setting up their own instances under their own domain & connect with the rest of the #Fediverse!
Also with prominent sites using #WordPress, we could see everyone from #NASA to the #WhiteHouse join the Fediverse (pending activation of the #ActivityPub plugin).
There's currently an incident involving some kind of Japanese skids who call themselves the "Kuroneko" organization.
They seem to be attempting to commit DDoS attacks on Misskey servers, constantly creating new accounts on compromised instances and spamming advertisements for their hacking services.
Admins who are federating with these compromised servers, while they might not get compromised themselves, may be affected by the sheer amount of traffic volume from their spam.
Admins are advised to #fediblock or temporarily stop sending requests to affected servers for now, if they don't want to get secondhand DoS'd
IMO I never expected them to be Japanese out of all things, kinda funny. They also host VOICEROID and VOICEVOX TTS bots on their Discord apparently. Kinda a weird flex I guess.
#fediadmins are advised to temporarily disable sign-ups for now, or implement some anti-spam measure to limit signups to not get spammed.
Currently they are targeting #misskey and #mastodon, but other #activitypub servers may soon be targeted.
…I noticed that they gave shoutouts to #Mastodon & #WordPress (#Tumblr was strangely ignored) as well as credited #Misskey for their quote implementation (even #Firefish received an honorable mention).
I do wonder how many Threads users have activated ActivityPub on their account‽
The flagship instance of Fire Fish is now OFFLINE.
The significance of this event is many of the Fire Fish Developers have previously come forward claiming the lead developer vanished. Unfortunately, the lead developer treated their project as a centralized project, meaning that they were the sole person making decisions, giving no access to accounts or code changes or even donations, despite having a team behind them.
Not every fediverse user want to connect to Bluesky but for those that do, you can look into using Friendica. The next release will allow you to use your Bluesky account from within Friendica. Interact with Mastodon / Msskey / Pixelfed etc and Bluesky users together on one platform
"Omg... Joe Biden is the 1st President posting in the Fediverse"
No, Joe Biden is using mainstream social media, owned by Meta (Facebook), which most of the Fediverse blocked a while back. If POTUS (President of the United States) wants to join the Fediverse correctly and hold that claim, they need to join a true Fediverse instance such as Misskey, Sharkey, Mastodon, or something else not government a large corporation which avoid paying taxes.
As of today, I've retired from the role of Misskey's english and german translation manager, mostly due to IRL changes and lack of time.
Don't worry though - I've already found and suggested someone capable and willing to take over the english translation side of things, so that should continue to be smooth sailing for everyone as it has been for these part four years (that I have enjoyed very much).
For the german side of things however, I haven't, which means Misskey is now looking for a JP->DE translator.
If you, or anyone you know, feel like that's a role you'd like to take up, I'd be very happy if Misskey's german translation could also stay up to date in the future.
I've already been mostly inactive on Fedi for the past 5 months or so, which is a status that will be continuing for the foreseeable future.
Today I learned there is a fork of Misskey called, Sharkey.
To quote the development:
"Sharkey is an upstream fork of Misskey that promises to deliver an improved feature set and UX across the board, with an emphasis on providing improved performance over other Misskey derivatives, our mission is to cohesive experience taking note of our communities feedback to better our software."

How did we go from way too many semi popular english Misskey forks to literally only having one soon (Sharkey)
Firefish kinda had its moment but currently doesn't seem that much will happen
Foundkey while still maintained is not really meant for more than one user instances
Iceshrimp is currently doing an full C# or well rather they are doing their own thing not using the MisskeyAPI and also rewriting the frontend, which means when thats done they aren't really part of the Misskey Family of forks anymore
Catodon, from the start is not trying to be anything like misskey and more like a user friendly mastodon-key mix, but they are also interested in using Iceshrimp as a kinda upstream meaning they would also not be part of the Misskey Family of Forks
how did we go from #Sharkey being hated on for being another #misskey fork, to it being the only major true english misskey fork left, if #firefish doesn't comeback to life and if iceshrimp continues its rewrite
I could not locate the tech support contact info for #NASA or the #Whitehouse, but I did message them both them via their general contact forms.
I asked if they would consider installing the #ActivityPub plugin on their respective #WordPress websites, so that the #Fediverse can follow their content unfiltered by any algorithm or angry super villian firing rockets into space.
Damn I just realized not all my posts are being federated over to #Misskey's flagship instance misskey.io because nobody from there is following me... :mima_copium: It'd be like if I post here and can't see it in mastodon.social for example :mima_derp:
Since I can't seem to create an account there for some reason, will a kind soul who has a #Misskeyio account follow me from there please? :comfy_miko_reimu: Tyy in advanceee
Google provides a tool called PageSpeed Insights which gives a website some metrics to assess how well it is put together and how fast it loads. There are a lot of technical details but in general green scores are good, orange not great and red is bad.
I tried to ensure the tests were similar for each platform by choosing a page that shows a list of posts, like https://mastodon.social/explore.
The rest don’t seem to have prioritized performance or chose a software architecture that cannot be made to perform well on these metrics. It will be very interesting to see how that affects the cost of running large instances and the longevity of the platforms. Time will tell.
