Extraordinary that there's virtually no coverage in western media of China's extraordinary expansion of its railway network, and no questions about why we can't or don't do the same #Railway#China#Europe#US
It's pretty disturbing to realise that I will be automatically disliked because I hold a different view of #China. A post about my efforts in trying to find "balanced" information about the current US-China tensions and being exasperated by discussions around it, and how I feel the urge to self-censor lest I be labelled "pro-China". It has not been easy!
We were just having a normal conversation under the warm Adelaide sun when she said, “I hate Chinese people. Hate them.”
I stared at her, wondering if she realised that I am Chinese.
I rarely write about #politics but I feel it’s important to describe the impact of rising #USChinaTensions on a “normie” member of the #Chinese diaspora. It's this: Sheer, utter frustration and exasperation.
#China is building an open national chip plan around #RiscV
Chinese RISC-V Alliance was established in 2018 to build out a full open-source chip ecosystem by 2030.
Long-term goal is to create a platform with full chip development platform with open-source chip designs, electronic design automation, and verification tools.
Chinese institutions are currently developing open-source EDA tools to design RISC-V chips.
“#Trump’s businesses received at least $7.8 mil from 20 foreign govts during his presidency, according to new documents released by House Dems that show how much he received from overseas transactions, most of it from #China.
…offers concrete evidence that Trump engaged in the kind of conduct that House GOP have labored, so far unsuccessfully, to prove that Pres Biden did as they work to build an impeachment case against him” 1/…
Was das bedeutet? Streamst du deine Verkaufsshow aus eher “aermeren” Vierteln, wirst du abgestraft!
I haven't returned to #China for four years, and now that the restrictions have eased, I went back to #Shanghai and stayed for 3 months. Now that I've returned here in Montreal, and that my travel migraine is gone, I shall recount my stay there.
For more context, people in China have been assembling plain white bread sandwiches to try to understand how we live in this part of the world, and they are posting through it (the idea of eating anything cold or raw, especially a vegetable, is seen as especially disgusting in the Chinese world, with some exceptions)
The genuine confusion you feel when almost the entire world loves #LoveBetweenFairyandDevil and you detest it to the depths of your very being. 😆 🙃
But that's par the course for me - I tend to dislike very popular dramas. Disliked Ashes of Love too. Two things are deal breakers for me: An infantile female lead & terrible acting.
When you have both together, well, that show doesn't stand a chance with me lol.
The National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan constatation^1 on US loss of competitiveness self-inflicted by the neoliberal ideological bias that free market will always choose optimal path:
> The People’s Republic of #China continued to subsidize at a massive scale both traditional industrial sectors, like steel, as well as key industries of the future, like clean energy, digital infrastructure, and advanced biotechnologies. America didn’t just lose manufacturing—we eroded our competitiveness in critical technologies that would define the future.
Was there anything preventing US from " subsidize at a massive scale" these sectors, apart from ideological choice? No, just like there's no physical principles preventing UK from electrifying its trains fleet whene everyone did that 30 years ago, rather than run diesel trains (!) well into 2020's. Except for maximizing their return on investment, which hampers new investments even when they're desperately needed.
Soviet ideological obsession on criminalization of any private trade (literally, see article 154 of the criminal code of the #USSR) led to shortages of everything, including toilet paper and eventually collapse of the regime. The system wasn't flexible, because ideology is by definition rigid.^2
Free market is on the opposite end of the scale, but it doesn't guarantee immunity to ideological rigidity on its own — a truly free market also includes freedom to use subsidies when they make sense, which neoliberal ideology prevents.
I didn't like the default desktop, UKUI (Ubuntu Kylin User Interface). While I liked the coloring and style, the user menu was not organized (everyone in 1 long menu). The default greeter for log-in looked like a poor copy from Windows, if only for the virtual keyboard that takes over your display when you try to log in.
"#China is at heightened risk of missing its #climate targets and suffering major economic losses unless it takes decisive actions to put a halt to runaway coal power plant expansion and reform outdated power grid management, new research has found."
[Edit to add} But the country's clean energy boom may just help it reach its 2030 goals, see in-depth piece linked in reply.

This is not a joke. Donald Trump is stating very plainly what he would do if reelected.
