These cubes aren’t moving or changing (as implied by the arrows). At all. Not even a little. Other than the color toggle, they remain constant.

Every hashtag on every post on every platform should ALWAYS be pascal case (a.k.a. camel case). I made this to illustrate how screenreaders read hashtags depending on whether they are lowercase or pascal case.

It’s a small thing that all of us can do to build a more inclusive, accessible internet for all. Please take the time to use pascal case.

Some words about Mastodon moderation:

  1. It’s hard. No decision is easy and there’s lots of gray area even with explicit rules.
  2. We’ll sometimes debate for a long time on a single post. We do our best to make the right call.
  3. Even so, we sometimes make mistakes. We’re willing to accept appeals when that happens.
  4. We get a lot of things right. You can’t even imagine some of the traumatic things we see.

I didn’t know I needed to watch a cute, chubby field hamster running through a field in slow motion, but here we are.

Wildlife photographer Julian Rad has a nice collection of photos/videos of furry little friends in nature. They’re super cute.

First clip showing Julian holding his camera near the ground in front of the hamster, filming in real time. Second clip showing the footage from the camera in slow motion of the hamster running on the grass with its large jowls and tiny feet.

NPR’s data shows that they lost nothing after being ostracized by the psychotic white billionaire. It counters the idea that leaving Twitter is a loss. Let’s dismiss the idea that we need to be held hostage on any platform.

When I was in Wellington, New Zealand, I was entranced by their unusual crosswalk icons. I asked my new friends there about them. I was told a story about a drag performer and activist by the name of Carmen Rupe. She was a trans woman who was also Māori (native people of NZ).

Her story is pretty cool. And it’s awesome that NZ honored her this way.

🧵1/2. Here’s something non-coders probably don’t know about development. Code is written in English. That’s a privilege that English speakers have in this space.

There are custom words used in code. They can be written in other languages. But reserved words that are part of the core language must be in English.

For example in HTML we begin the content area of the structure using <body>. A Spanish-speaking coder can’t use <cuerpo> for that.

Recently I posted that some libraries in southern Oregon were under attack. Racist, bigoted fascists were trying to infiltrate their Board so they could ban books.

Well, the voters have spoken. Our candidates—kind people with integrity—won the election. They won!

Small elections are huge. They mean so very much. Just wanted to share, because these victories have been few and far between.

Today is Indigenous People’s Day in the U.S. I highly recommend the series Reservation Dogs.

It’s the first series to feature all indigenous writers and directors, along with an almost entirely indigenous North American cast and production team.

Everything about it is outstanding. The writing, the characters, the acting…everything.

Friends in native iOS development. I’d love advice.

I’ve been writing code for over two decades, but never native iOS. Nor C. Nor anything related. But I’m beginning the journey.

Can you recommend a favorite resource for helping folks begin from the ground floor? I can spend all day in an editor and my terminal. But Xcode and iOS is an entirely new world for me.

Thanks in advance!

I’m learning Swift (coding language). The tutorials are by a man in the UK who frequently uses the phrase “it’s down to you.” This piqued my curiosity as an information architect who is passionate about .

In the US “up to you” means it’s your decision, whereas “down to you” means you’re the last person who can do something. Apparently the UK’s “down to you” is the same as the US’s “up to you.”

I’m geeking out about it.

Do y’all have any advice about mental health medications? Good/bad experiences? Recommendations? Warnings?

I’m considering this journey but am unsure if it’s the right path for me.

Grateful for any thoughts. Also happy to receive DMs from folks who don’t wanna share publicly.

There’s no perfect browser. They have to make money and no one wants to charge/pay for products. So we pay with our privacy.

I’m trying @Vivaldi because they’re a top candidate for browsing privacy.

But I didn’t know how much I’d love this browser. Especially their “workspaces” feature. It’s a productivity masterpiece. They also have a built-in translation widget. Two really meaningful features.

One of my favorite Instagram accounts is that of Japanese artist Shinrashinge. (I really wish he was here, but alas, no.)

He makes the most fascinating paper-based anime creations. Mediums include frames, cups, plates, and more. They’re so delightful.

Illustration of a Japanese woman in a red flowery dress with a streetscape in the background. His hands move small tabs on each side of the frame one at a time to create the animation in which she turns to the side and back again, then raises a lollipop to her mouth.

Y’all. I made seitan from scratch. It’s a yummy vegan protein that’s absolutely scrumptious. 😋🤤

Seitan is made from wheat gluten. Basically the protein-rich portion of the wheat berry. The finished texture is meat roast like, from what I understand (I’m a lifelong vegetarian so I don’t know).

Anyway, it looks like brain but taste like bliss. And when you say “I love seitan” it freaks people out. 😂

Of course Levar Burton wants you to read banned books. Heven Haile sits down with Levar and MoveOn’s Rahna Epting to talk about it.

“When I read Fahrenheit 451 for the first time,” LeVar Burton says, “I couldn’t imagine that situation in my reality. It was a shame, right? Wow. Those poor people in that misguided society. I live in that society now. That dystopian story has become my truth.”

Friends. I’m seeking advice for my niece.

She’s being asked to take on new responsibilities at her job and wants to be properly compensated. They’re asking her to do Microsoft Access work. Her role isn’t technical and has nothing to do with it. (She’s also a Black woman who doesn’t want to get walked over because of it.)

Does anyone have any advice or info about what compensation looks like for that kind of work? Thanks in advance!
