Work in progress: a set of three olive utensils. This is all very hard scrap wood that's been hanging around for a year so there are definitely power tools involved. Last step is my favorite: a very close rubdown with cabinet scrapers, which leave a super-smooth tool-finished piece that can be oiled without any sanding at all because the scraper cuts the fibers instead of tearing them. #woodworking#carving#spoons#wip
This guy gets it: "There’s also this oily smell of AI and machine learning in the tech atmosphere, where I no longer feel relevant and I seem to have stopped caring about new tech when I noticed that 8 in 10 articles are about some new LLM or image generation model. I guess I like the smell of wood better." https://alinpanaitiu.com/blog/woodworking-escape-from-software-absurdity/#carving#software
Hogged out an avocado-shaped bowl from a big avo trunk. Scorp, hook knife, bowl adze, no power tools. Not pictured: a chunk of ironwood I sometimes use to whack home the adze. Datapoint: the inside of a green avocado tree smells just like avocados! #carving#wip#kauai
My mom was kind enough to bake cookies and paint the cookies, then she took pictures of the cookies next to the carvings!
I love how she paints them. It reminds me of when I would beg her to draw clothes for my paper dolls as a kid. The outfits were never 80’s cool, but they were vibrant and creative. :ablobcatheartsqueeze:
I've been trying to find the "BEFORE" pictures of a few of my projects and just stumbled upon some pictures of some of my other spoons. These were all given away, but it's kind of nice to look back and see what I'd done before. #SpoonCarving#WoodCarving#Carving#Woodworking
A neighbor brought over some milo wood to play with; I roughed out a ladle and discovered a bunch of things in the not-quite-done / needs-attention pile that wanted a coat of Howard's butcher block conditioner.
Feeling very happy with the olive-wood spurtles; they are a great all-purpose tool in the kitchen and stand up well to re-finishing.
I spotted this rather wonderful bit of stone carving above a close door on Govan Road in Glasgow. It's the only close in the block of tenements to have such an adornment.
I carved a vampire bat Jack-o-lantern this year. When my son saw my preliminary sketch he said that was exactly what he wanted on his Jack-o-lantern too. So now we have two!
Usually he draws a second design on a smaller pumpkin and I carve it, but this Hallowe’en it’s 🦇🦇🎃🎃
