If anyone is wondering how to clean up construction dust from drywalling in your house, here's what I have ..found so far.

  1. Wear an N95 mask. Drywall dust is very fine and not at all good for your lungs.

  2. Pick up any large debris. You might choose to sweep this up with a dust pan, but do be aware that sends a ton of drywall dust up into the air.

  3. Use a utility/shop vac with a HEPA filter to vacuum loose drywall dust off walls/floor/other surfaces

(repeat 3... many times... changing the filter if necessary)

  1. Wet mop floor (and maybe even wet wipe walls) to get the last bit of dust.

  2. Run a HEPA filter (or Corsi Rosenthal) after all that.

Thank you Kate & Braeden for organizing this cleanup of the York Rd sidewalk used by students at nearby John Muir ES!
-group selfie of the last 4 of us, but many more showed up to help; we arrived by foot, bike, car
-clearing blackberry bramble & overgrown ivy during/after
-clearing moss & invasive ivy around a stairway
-sidewalks now have more usable space

Side by side images, left shows people trimming and removing bramble and ivy from the hillside next to a sidewalk, right shows the cleared sidewalk with some full yard waste bags
Side by side images, left shows people removing invasive ivy from a hillside next to an outdoor stairway that is covered in moss, right shows the cleared hillside and stairway
Side by side images of sidewalks that have been cleared of overgrowth and debris and are much wider

Hi everyone!

We've just released a new version of , v0.13.0 aka Spider Sloth!

You can get the release from here: https://github.com/superseriousbusiness/gotosocial/releases/tag/v0.13.0

As usual, please read the migration notes carefully when upgrading to this version.

Thanks! Enjoy!

Highlights of this release:

  • Create, view, and vote in polls. It's been a while in the making but GoToSocial now has support for polls, aka Question activity types. You can create, view, and vote in polls using your client of choice.
  • Show unsupported media placeholders in incoming posts, where media could not be downloaded (temporarily or otherwise). No more dropped media on posts! You'll instead now get a link to the media on the originating instance, that you can click through in your (mobile) browser.
  • Mute threads that you're being overwhelmed by. Notifications for replies, likes, and boosts in that thread will no longer be generated.
  • Media cleanup scheduling. Previously media scheduling took place every night at 12am. With the new media scheduling settings in the config, you can customize the schedule to run it at different times and frequencies. https://docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/admin/media_caching/#cleanup
  • Support for setting instance language . You can use the new instance-languages setting to indicate one or more primary languages for your instance. https://docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/configuration/instance/
  • Support for language tags on posts. Language of posts is now correctly federated in and out of your instance. The language of posts is also shown on the web view of statuses and threads.
  • Gather and expose prometheus format metrics. You can now expose a /metrics endpoint to allow a Prometheus instance to scrape metrics about Go runtime memory usage, http request and database metrics, and more. https://docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/advanced/metrics/

How secrecy and regulatory capture drove Alberta’s oil and gas liability crisis.

https://theconversation.com/how-secrecy-and-regulatory-capture-drove-albertas-oil-and-gas-liability-crisis-214900

"“A hustle in the oil patch”, a “dirty legacy”: These are just a couple of the ways that the escalating costs of abandoning and reclaiming non-producing oil wells in Canada have been described.

In a new paper, we look back over 40 years and identify three factors that have led to this unprecedented regulatory failure."

The Dirty Deadly Front End of Nuclear Power — 15,000 Abandoned Uranium Mines (Pt. 1)

by Josh Cunnings, March 11, 2016

"The perplexing problem of these open, deadly, toxic messes was discussed between Emerson Urry and Arnie Gundersen.

"Urry: I want to go back for a minute to the uranium. We were talking about Fukushima and obviously the myriad isotopes that are put off as a byproduct of the nuclear fission that is happening in the reactor. It all starts there with the uranium, and there was quite a rush for that, and now we have all of these situations. To our understanding there are about 15,000 abandoned uranium mines that have been left in complete ruin with very little cleanup or remediation at all, just in the western United States. This has happened, by-and-large, because of an antiquated mining bill – the 1872 Mining Bill – still affecting these situations today – that kind of allowed miners to just walk away from these situations — but yet, they remain in the open leaching off tailings – blowing around dust. I think there’s about 4,500 of these exposed mining sites just in country – another 2,500 or so in . How do we deal with that situation? What does the future hold in those regards, and quite frankly, are we all being poisoned by these mines?

"Gundersen: I’ll give you another example of the same thing, and I would say 'yes' to everything you said is the quick answer. There is a mill-tailings site in Moab, . The Nuclear Regulatory Commission [] told the owner of the site that they needed to set aside six million dollars to clean it up. Well, the actual is a billion dollars. What did the owner do? They declared and walked away.

"Urry: And it wasn’t bonded? No bond?

"Gundersen: Right. It wasn’t bonded. You know, if you bonded uranium mining, you wouldn’t have uranium mining."

The River is low this week, so I noticed an old car tire half buried in the bank. On the theory that tires are pollution, I pulled it out to take it to the dump. But as I was knocking the mud out of it, a salamander and a crayfish fell out and glared at me in mute reproach.
Are tires wildlife habitat? Should I have left it there?
