Some people say they don't want to join the Fediverse or Mastodon, because they think the UI sucks. As a front end developer, a designer-kind of a person who creates user interfaces, I agree. Most of the web clients on the Fedi are horrendous, even Mastodon by default. There's lots of room for improvement.
We should really focus on how to make it more pleasing to the eye, more modern and more pleasant. This should not be a nerd network, just for geeks to geek out. This is not IRC or BBS.
As long as Mastodon for instance looks like it's designed by a back end engineer, contains font-awesome icons, looks like 2010, and stuff like that, being open and free is not good reason enough for many. I'm not bashing it, Mastodon is not the worst out there, in fact in my honest opinion Mastodon user experience is far better than Akkoma or Calckey for example. It's also more accessible than many modern UIs, for example my visual impaired wife prefers the Vanilla Mastodon UI over my #BirdUI modifications, she has some small tiny improvements of her own like distinguishing the colors in the action buttons as they have no proper contrast in any of the default themes. But that's it. She likes it as it is. So it cannot be that bad. However, it could be better overall.
#OpenSource doesn't mean the product should look like it's created in a basement by a math teacher. For some people Mastodon UX is sufficient (it even is for me, I like it enough and it doesn't prevent me from using it), but it should be WORLD CLASS. I don't say the answer is #MastodonBirdUI but it should be something much more modern and minimal than the current default UI. Pixelfed's developer is a designer oriented, Pixelfed is indeed an example of an awesome Fediverse app experience throughout the web and apps. That is how it should be.
Bank: “Please create a secure password”
Me: Types in secure password

Me: what?

Bank: “we dont allow copy paste, fuck yourself”
Bank: “you did it too much. Gotta call us. 3 hour wait.” :)
Honestly, I’ve been really enjoying making these, probably the most I’ve been excited to model something for months. So I exchanged some sleep for a faster turnaround :) Previous post here...
Diesmal recht heldenhaft-martialisch - ein Ritter in voller Rüstung auf weißem Pferd, der einem bereits auf dem Rücken liegenden Drachen die Lanze ins geöffnete Maul sticht.
Was will man uns verkaufen? So viel sei verraten: Lanzen jedenfalls nicht.
I really loved @FixedFun 's idea for the kbin mascot, so I decided to refine it a bit and make some color alternatives. All credit to them for this wonderful idea! I merely refined it. Note, the circles beside the logo are just a color pallete swatch, not actually meant to be apart of the logo....
I heard that votes have been changed to behave closer to how people would expect, and boost is staying here as well. So I had an idea how to bring it all together in the interface....
Artemis might use a swipe gesture to visually hint at the relation between upvoting and boosting, as shown in the main animation. Here's a static app mockup with both swipe levels displayed. I'd also imagine that there should be a setting that auto-upvotes posts when boosting.
Hi everyone, I’m back with another kbin icon pack. This time it’s flags for 18 EU countries (the non-fancy ones) + an EU flag. So 38 icons in total. All icons come in two styles: semi-transparent/glassy and opaque metallic. I also made a simple instance logo generator....
It's bad to use words like "advanced" in UI design, but I'm trying to communicate this to someone else, with more than, "Because I know it's bad due to user research and user testing I've done and stuff I've read back in the day."
For example: There was a blog post somewhere about Nautilus having an "advanced mode"* back in the Eazel days and how that's bad.
(IIRC; it had 3 states: beginner, intermediate, advanced and some things were hidden.)
Going to try creating a sci-fi gun in MagicaCSG. I'm not very experienced in detailed hard-surface modeling, so it's going to be an interesting challenge.
Disclaimer: I hate real-life guns. My sci-fi gun will emit a peace beam. ✌️😉
Pt.2 of the Kbird mascot. Thoughts on these two designs?
Again, based on @FixedFun 's original designs so creds to them for the idea....
Kbin Mascot pt.3, updated from feedback and several potential designs. More feedback wanted :)
VOTE HERE...
🎉The winner is Kibby! 150/375 votes. To celebrate, I have a gift for everyone! ❤︎ 🎉
It's been two days since I originally posted the final name poll, votes have stopped coming in, and the winner is Kibby!...
#1 won by a landslide! Thanks for all the voting and feedback everyone! Now, what is his name? 🤔
Edit: Vote on the poll for a name!...
OC I’m back with several more community icons: check out Artemis (future kbin app), Urban Details, 3D Modeling and some other stuff

I refined FixedFun's mascot design for Kbin. Thoughts? Feedback? (More pics/alts in post!)

OC Assuming boost stays as some sort of a super-upvote/share combo alongside regular up/downvote buttons, here's a UI idea on how to merge it into one unified voting system. App animation + web block mockup

OC Kbinicons Part 3 is here: 19 EU flags in two different styles each + a psd file to generate small instance logos for separate kbin instances
