There are 258 albums on my Jellyfin instance. What about your digital music collections?

Hey, home AV geeks - help a lad out, eh?

Currently, my media server has an NFS share which exposes the directories containing my music and DVD rips.

What does using something like or get me that this setup doesn't?

Also tired of endless streaming subscriptions? Take back control and self-host!

Are you tired of shelling out money for multiple streaming subscriptions every month? It seems like every media company now has its own platform

I actually have the "share my entire viewing history with friends" thing enabled in . It's only fair. I could already spy on what everyone else watched on my server. They might as well be able to see what I watch.

And the only Plex "friends" I have are the tiny handful of family & friends with access to my server.

People used Trakt for a reason. Isn't this basically just that? Plus the boneheaded opt-out decision that will probably sink them.

(Gotta look into I guess)

Question for my system engineers:

What's better for a home lab

  1. One application per VM
  2. Couple applications per VM
  3. All applications on one VM

I got around 6-7 applications that run on my server

Stupid question: I need to find a way to ensure that a network share is mounted at ALL times, even after a reboot. Why. My server loves to punish me and wipe my libraries because specific mounts are not mounted. A simple "sudo mount -a" and a Scan All Libraries fixes the problem but it's still annoying when I install updates and reboot.

Any thoughts on this one?

Ideas for setting up a media server compatible with xbox viewing?

I have a TCL tv with (with google smart TV software) and have been ingesting TV shows, games, and movies primarily from an xbox using various paid streaming apps for like 15 years. As streaming costs go up I’ve wanted to set up a media server compatible with playing stuff from the xbox and have had some friends suggest Plex so...

Also bleibt's wohl erst mal dabei ;-)

My server is consistently freezing after several minutes if I boot and run it with no monitor attached. Having a monitor attached at boot and then disconnecting it seems to resolve the issue. System logs show nothing when freezes occur. Hard to troubleshoot because it doesn't happen if a monitor is plugged in. Anybody have any ideas?

Last year, I tried out , and found it great, but it missed one (for me) must-have feature; HDR support in the LG app. This made me stick with .

But as Plex has gotten more enshittified, yesterday I decided to give Jellyfin another try. Happy to say that I can now watch HDR videos on my LG TV.

For the rest, I'm quite impressed with it. The only thing missing is a "skip intro" feature.

We get zero OTA TV signals

Tonight was the first night it hurt after stopped support in our area and cut our card off. We had several finales going on. I'm not paying for their dvr service. I've recorded over the air or via cablecard for +30 years

The tv season is about up and by the next, we will have a remote DVR/PVR setup

We're putting a TV tuner in my brother's system, he has A+ OTA sig & he has fiber

will run it there and we will m3u tuner it into

Dear authors of - you DON'T need to store two hundred thousand cache and metadata files in the filesystem. I'm sorry but you just don't. Install a database and get it all in there. On a 16-core machine with all data stored on SSD, you still make us wait almost five straight minutes while the app uninstalls and all the shrapnel files are deleted? Come the hell on. A folder for every alphabetic character and name in every show??

Holy crap, Jellyfin is so friggin' hard to like. However, a secret: if you're using the Jellyfin AndroidTV client, save yourself some heartache and grab an external video player like Vimu. It's $3, and has none of the flaws of ExoPlayer or LibVLC on the platform and you can have Jellyfin just use that to play videos.

Uninstalling for the final time. Tried my best to like it, alongside , but it's just so horrible-looking, dysfunctional with absolutely no incentive for me to switch. The client apps for it look abysmal by comparison with Plex (and no, I'm not even using Plex Pass, just the free version) The AppleTV app in particular is janky as hell, the poster icons mode for shows literally overlap the titles of each show like the CSS is broken or something. Plex client is easy to install and set up, good looking and simply works.

Online, it appears that people have zero legitimate reasons for switching, apart from disliking Plex for some nebulous "people are feeling that Plex is moving away from self hosted media to streaming services" reason - https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/126q8di/is_jellyfin_really_so_much_better_than_plex/ - I'm self-hosting it and it works perfectly.

Far as I'm concerned, IF and when that happens I'll reconsider. For right now it's way more polished than JF and simply works better for this household and its five TVs.

I think the news about essentially "reinventing" cable channels again into their streaming service, is pretty hilarious, though I'm not exactly surprised by that since I too honestly have been wanting such a feature on or for really long time.

The idea is, you could still watch things on demand, unlike cable channels of old, but you could also just tune in to a channel and be "served" different things to watch by episode, or by movie, based on what is available. That'd be perfect when you just want to leave the TV on and have it play random stuffs all day.
