Let me get this straight...

Students getting relief from onerous debt is unconstitutional.

But justices secretly getting hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars in gifts, vacations, and free housing and education for their family members is just fine.

Hello?

texasric,

@rbreich While we're not the solution to the problem of young Americans seeking access to higher #education, we're humbly trying to be part of the solution. We're awarding five scholarships to young people interested in #STEM starting next year, 2024. Applicants will be selected from among the most enthusiastic young people who attend our summer camps.

Anemia is commonly found in mummified ancient Egyptian children.

A condition where the body lacks enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen to the body's tissues, it's not clear if anemia was the cause of their deaths but it likely contributed.

Malnutrition, parasitic infections, and genetic disorders, which still cause anemia today all probably contributed to its common occurrence in ancient Egypt.

The supreme court decision is yet another step in the wrong direction. While not a systemic fix, there is a fellowship for Black under/grads interested in genetics, genomics, bioinformatics and related fields. Deadline Monday. Please share widely.

A quick cycle over to the Sterrewacht, the astronomy department in Leiden, to see the masters thesis presentation by Merel Reitsma, who has been working on VLT & JWST imaging data for the protostellar jets HH211 & HH212.

Some audible gasps when the students saw the JWST data – I hope you’ll feel the same way when we have them finalised & published in the coming months 👍

Leiden astronomy masters student Merel Reitsma standing at the front of a small lecture room next to a projector screen, just about to give her talk titled “Proper motions, morphology, and extinction of protostellar jets HH211 and H212”.

Just got the copy of I designed. The art will be used on other things as well but I really wanted to have a useful item for related reasons. Has taken much longer than expected to get proof and such. Better late than never I suppose.

You kids should love the series as I finish them.

Good morning, happy Friday and happy weekend Mastodon!

For the today, talk to me about your plans for the day, what you hope to accomplish, what you have planned for today and the weekend ahead, or just anything you wish to talk about!

For me, I have absolutely no plans outside of a bit of work. Will likely make it a video game day today and then catch up on some TV shows.

@cliffwade I actually have a quiet moment with some coffee in my office. Going to be a busy day and weekend.

First, I'll help my wife get ready for the PEP boat competition next week:
https://www.navalengineers.org/Education/Promoting-Electric-Propulsion-PEP

Then it's off to Newton's Attic to do a design review for their new Robot Gladiator League Arena:

Then, learning more about Apptainer for my project:
https://apptainer.org

And finally studying to upgrade my license.

I was forced to make the full time switch to Linux last year by Microsoft's dull policies around hardware requirements for Windows 11 (Windows 10 was also no longer an option). I had dipped my feet into trying linux over the years, but I guess I wasn't ready until MSFT pushed me. Now I can say that I will never look back and I'm super happy to see some of my friends and coworkers in physics/astronomy talking about making the switch with me after seeing how it's going for me.

mucephie,

I want to contribute to other projects in my spare time as well, and of course make some friends along the way.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

I have alot of experience in and I have a comfortable amount of experience with #C++ etc. But I'm willing to step outside my comfort zone to learn other things

It doesn’t add up:

Math teachers who believe women no longer face discrimination tend to be biased against girls’ ability in math. And effects of bias like this can snowball over time.
