"An abandoned mine in #Finland is set to be transformed into a giant #battery to store renewable energy during periods of excess production.
The disused mine will be fitted with a #GravityBattery, which uses excess energy from renewable sources like solar and wind in order to lift a heavy weight. During periods of low production, the weight is released and used to power a turbine as it drops."

An innovative bio-electrochemical #fuel cell, discovered by University of California, Los Angeles, that can harness the metabolic processes of microbes in dirt to generate renewable, perpetual electricity to power small devices. It shows promise and potential to be an "eternal" power source with more research and development.

US National Waste and Recycling Association study alerts for rising lithium-batteries fire risk:
-5,000 fires a year in recycling facilities
-Increase of 40% in catastrophic fires in the last five years
-Li-ion batteries are the leading cause
-Driving insurance premiums from 20 c for each $100 up to $10 for each $100 of insured property
-Fire data collection is sketchy; numbers can be higher
