Editorial in Dawn - Pakistan's oldest English Daily:
"The writing is on the wall. The time for incremental steps is over. The scale of the challenge requires bold, decisive actions that reflect the urgency of the moment."
"Cambodia this year is facing the highest temperatures in 170 years, Chan Yutha, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, told The Associated Press on Monday. His agency has forecast that temperatures in most parts of the country could reach up to 43 degrees Celsius (109 degrees Fahrenheit) this week." #climate#heatwaves#climatechange#cambodia#climateemergency
"The Philippines is among the nations worst affected by the sweltering weather in Southeast Asia, where the intense tropical summer heat worsened by humidity forced class cancellations in recent weeks and sparked fears of water shortages, power outages and damage to agricultural crops." #Phillippines#climateemergency#climate#heatwave
How do we live together in #nature? Wood meadows, a managed & productive #ecosystem, can achieve this balance, a model of human activity benefitting #biodiversity.
For research, I’m going to the 14th European Conference on #Ecological Restoration this August in #Estonia, where the wood meadows are the most biodiverse sites in the world.
Green Party representation in Holyrood relies heavily on list votes from, predominantly, SNP supporters who won't look kindly on them for, as they see it, sabotaging the BHA. This means there's little likelihood of a pro-independence majority at the next election.
@melanie@Alternatecelt@alanferrier@iaruffell@sfscotland ahhh.... the changes to the climate won't benefit anyone, anywhere. But Scotland is in a particularly awful position. The failure of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation will make Scotland much colder as the rest of the world gets hotter, and the billions of refugees from the tropics start to flood north.
Interestingly when I wrote a research piece about news satire and climate change one of the main finding was that when it came to the fundamentals of climate change the coverage of the subject was BETTER in news satire than in main stream journalism.
Health systems account for around 4.6% of the total greenhouse gas emissions worldwide
If they were one country, health systems would be the fifth on the list of worst offenders.
There is so much work still to be done in this sector.
Conservative Party operatives are running a network of Facebook groups opposing London’s ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ) that have become a platform for widespread racism and Islamophobia, as well as conspiracy theories and celebrations of criminal damage.
It’s getting harder and harder not to conclude that humans are an utterly unrepentant parasitic species bent on destroying its host with haste and prejudice. There is no other conclusion possible or plausible at this point in our evolution. Wasn’t always this way, didn’t have to be this way… but regrettably, here we are on the eve of destruction. Can’t say we don’t deserve what we are surely going to get at this juncture, but it makes me sad for my grandchildren and future generations in general. It is they who will pay for this folly. #ClimateChange#ClimateEmergency#ClimateCrisis#FossilFuels#ResourceExtraction#Environment#stewardship#PlanetEarth
Fascinating article from Tim Harford on whether Wright's Law or Moore's Law is the determining factor in the prices of new technology. If it's Wright's Law, we could have had a green transition years ago.
