'Umbhoxo, Making Rugby an Afrikan Game’, corrects myths that #Black#Africans started playing #rugby or introduced to the sport 30 yrs ago when #SouthAfrica gained independence & tells a tale of how this #sport helped many Africans escape the harsh realities of #colonialism & #apartheid.
The #book is a collaborative work by Philani Nongogo, Bantu Siwisa, Hendrik Snyders, and Mzukisi Twala. #Historical analysis of the history of black Africans in rugby since the 1820’s.
The story of Pepe, a #hippopotamus from #Colombian drug lord #PabloEscobar’s private zoo, inspired #Dominican#FilmDirector Nelson Carlo de los Santos Arias to make a #film reflecting on the impact of #colonialism, he said. The #hippo, one of many wild animals kept on Escobar’s private estate, escaped into the surrounding countryside and lived there for many years after the drug lord’s death in 1993.
Today in Labor History February 24, 1895: Revolution broke out in Baire, near Santiago de Cuba. This was the beginning of the Cuban War of Independence (1895-1898). The liberation war ended with the Spanish-American War and the U.S. taking Cuba as a colony. Some of the more well-known commanders of the Cuban revolution were the poet Jose Marti (composer of “Guantanamera”) and Antonio Maceo, the Titan of Bronze.
“Himmler’s own racial, agrarian-utopian schemes were based on romantic notions of the ‘frontier’ inspired by the North American example” and in Mein Kampf, “Hitler invoked the American conquest of ‘the West’ as a model for Nazi continental territorial expansion in ‘the East’”
Scottish Pastoral: celebrating 300 years of Allan Ramsay’s Gentle Shepherd, seeking papers on pastoral(ism) & development, improvement, #colonialism, or #class in #Scotland across the long durée
"The Jews" are not carrying out the genocide in Gaza. Israel, a settler colonial state backed by other, bigger, wealthier settler colonial empires, is.
This is what we mean when we say that Israel is actively encouraging and promoting antisemitism. They're explicitly telling the world that to be Jewish is to be a genocidal maniac who celebrates the torture, slaughter, and starvation of an entire civilian population (and ironically branding any Jewish person who says otherwise as a self-hating antisemite). They're sending a clear message to millions of people (billions, actually) who may not know any better that if you think genocide is wrong, then you are an enemy of all Jewish people. There is a real danger that some may believe them.
Hey man, Biden’s doing the best he can to try and stop Israel’s genocide in Palestine. Heck he’s sent aid to the Israelis, he’s sent weapons to the Israelis, he’s even said with his whole chest “I don't believe you have to be a Jew to be a Zionist, and I am a Zionist.”
The B.C. Supreme Court has ruled a traditional Wet’suwet’en trespass law cannot “coexist” with the injunction order issued to Coastal GasLink in response to pipeline protests.
As a result, Chief Dsta’hyl was found guilty of criminal contempt.

Canada will continue to be a fascist state as long as it uses the Indian Act to dismiss traditional indigenous leadership and impose colonial oppression on unceded territory.
Canada considers indigenous people like Israel considers Palestinians: the oppression IS fascism. The fascist judges and lawyers are the front line workers of the endless genocide on Turtle Island.

#Eurovision / The fact the world is missing is that threatening to ban Israel from participating in the Eurovision Song Contest, would have had much bigger impact than any #ICJ ruling against it. Israelis are addicted to attention, and pity.
Feel bad for Eden Golan. Representing Israel while your country is standing accused of #genocide must be morally challenging for her … or maybe not?
Q: How are you preparing for the public diplomacy [hasbara] front?
[…] I'm planning a huge and powerful Eurovision number. I want to show everyone how strong we are.
[…] I have a huge team behind me that will help me, that will get me ready for this. All we need to do is bring our truth. I will bring this truth, because we have nothing to hide.
Note to self: “having nothing to hide” is the literally the antonym of #Hasbara 🙈 … maybe her #Hebrew is not that great?
The heated debate over Israel's participation in the #Eurovision reveals a deep-seated desire among Israelis to be seen as European. For a significant portion of the population originating as migrants and refugees from Eastern Europe, Israel served as a place to shed their "Oriental" identities and reinvent themselves. Like a manager at the startup #Wix notoriously demanded of its staff, who were encouraged to support Israel’s ‘narrative’ in #Hamas conflict:
However, the inherent contradiction is that if Israel is accepted, or is part of Europe, or merely exists because of European #colonialism, then it's unavoidably also exposed as a colonial project.
This poignant opinion column, by Noa Limona, perpetuates the debate over Israel's empty symbolic gestures and its cynical exploitation of a grim reality of a forever-war.
"October Rain" well represents what Israel offers to the world. They're talking about a political solution to the conflict, a vision of "the day after", but what is the return that we offer? A vision devoid of vision, a solution devoid of solution, some moaning about our misery, "Haven't the Jewish people suffered enough?", and that's it. More of the same thing, which essentially contains nothing and nothing at all.
This is how we are perceived in the world, this is how the world sees us, and we have become repugnant to it.
"Writers of history," says the songless song, "stand by my side / Look into my eyes, and you will see."
South Africa's application to the International Court of Justice, to establish Israel’s responsibility for violations of the Genocide Convention, hold it fully accountable under international law, and ensure the protection of Palestinians in Gaza:
This case is distinct from South Africa vs Israel (in regard to its violations to the Genocide convention) but its timing is great: it maintains the pressure and the topic in the headlines.
