so much of the promise of generative AI as it is currently constituted, is driven by rote entitlement.

Very nice analysis by Brian Merchant ( @brianmerchant ) here: https://www.bloodinthemachine.com/p/why-is-sam-altman-so-obsessed-with

He puts into clear terms what had previously been an unarticulated, creeping suspicion I had about . Clearly there are many angles from which to come at what's going on with , but I appreciate this one quite a bit.

It’s nauseating that the hyperscalers are crankin’ the carbon to inflate the AI bubble like there’s no tomorrow (which there won’t be, for my children, if we don’t cut back) but hey, don’t forget that Bitcoin is still in the running for the single most dangerous-to-the-planet use of computers.

Aha, I get it now: the GenAI enshittification of cloud services like Slack, StackOverflow, Google, Discord, MSFT, and all the rest is a conspiracy by lonely SysAdmins who miss the old days of running IT equipment in-house and are pushing a return to on-prem 🖥️💽⌨️

TIL: CxO people are making crucial strategic decisions based on ... what ChatGPT happens to regurgitate. 😵‍💫

So to have a chance of a good understanding of your services or ideas, and therefore a good decision from these CxO people, you need to feed the GenAI beast with more publicly available data.

Like a monstously inefficient search engine. 😵‍💫

"What do you mean by progress when you talk about AI?" and progress for whom?

I asked the techno-optimist guy at an AI Hype Manel!

  • Does progress mean getting bigger or better models?

  • What about the impact on environment, water resources, destruction of communities, mining raw materials in Africa?

He first didn't get my Q. Then he said he believed in the "utilitarian view" & developing intelligence is very important.

Just parroting the AI hype people!

A policy on use of Generative AI has been accepted by the Minecraft Wiki community.

With development of new tools and technology, wikis have to keep up and evaluate risks and effects of those on the wiki and their communities. This policy is a result of exactly those evaluations.

Just FYI, if you have older parents or other family members, set up some sort of shibboleth with them so they know what to ask you if you ever call them asking for something. These new generative models are going to be extremely convincing, and the idiots in charge of these companies think they can use guardrails to stop it being used inappropriately. They can't.

New bookmark: React, Electron, and LLMs have a common purpose: the labour arbitrage theory of dev tool popularity.

“React and the component model standardises the software developer and reduces their individual bargaining power excluding them from a proportional share in the gains”. An amazing write-up by @baldur about the de-skilling of developers to reduce their ability to fight back against their employers.

Very few people seem to be dealing with the facts that:

  • services are all being priced as loss-leaders at this point.

  • gen AI is only going to get more expensive, there's literally no forseeable prospect for cost reduction in how AI is produced.

  • Eventually these vendors are gonna be expected to count profits, not revenues, & that's going to mean either fewer services, less service, higher prices, or all of the above.
