Using and LLMs for unfiltered and unsupervised one-to-many and tactics for content feels downright dangerous. That may change over time, but for now, pay attention to brand missteps with AI when it's given free rein to produce content for customers. Explore AI, but protect your by using AI cautiously for now. Three examples🧵 :

(1/3) OK, Sora is cool, but what are the long-term impacts and applications?

Like ChatGPT, the OpenAI's Sora that was released yesterday did not introduce anything new; it just took it to a new level.

Nightshade 1.0 is out: https://nightshade.cs.uchicago.edu/index.html

From their "What is Nightshade?" page:

Since their arrival, generative AI models and their trainers have demonstrated their ability to download any online content for model training. For content owners and creators, few tools can prevent their content from being fed into a generative AI model against their will. Opt-out lists have been disregarded by model trainers in the past, and can be easily ignored with zero consequences. They are unverifiable and unenforceable, and those who violate opt-out lists and do-not-scrape directives can not be identified with high confidence.

In an effort to address this power asymmetry, we have designed and implemented Nightshade, a tool that turns any image into a data sample that is unsuitable for model training. More precisely, Nightshade transforms images into "poison" samples, so that models training on them without consent will see their models learn unpredictable behaviors that deviate from expected norms, e.g. a prompt that asks for an image of a cow flying in space might instead get an image of a handbag floating in space.

Even cooler, it seems the first devices to support the new eraser are Windows on ARM laptops and tablets!

this isn’t rocket science. if you put information in, it will come out. an exploit might not exist today, but it’s only a matter of time before it’s common. training data, prompts, RAG-injected info…all of it needs to follow basic security principles. https://not-just-memorization.github.io/extracting-training-data-from-chatgpt.html

The guessing game of prompting to produce something consistent is exhausting.

It seems obvious I'm trying to generate some black and white circle. See this batch of 9 images generated with different seeds.

Where is that interior coming from?

Prompt: one black circle 1915, high contrast, plain, round, Pi

Negative Prompt: text, colors, lines, concentric, angles, faces, triangle, interior, figures, wall, straw, spiral, labyrinth, grid

Very few people seem to be dealing with the facts that:

  • services are all being priced as loss-leaders at this point.

  • gen AI is only going to get more expensive, there's literally no forseeable prospect for cost reduction in how AI is produced.

  • Eventually these vendors are gonna be expected to count profits, not revenues, & that's going to mean either fewer services, less service, higher prices, or all of the above.

There's no "there" there, got it? It's just spitting back a funhouse mirror of what everyone else said.

100% agree with this. Generative AI technology will absolutely transform the way people consume and share information. It will cause fundamental shifts in the workplace, and not all in ways we can predict. But don’t expect it all to happen this year or next!
Transformative technologies take time to work their way through society (and the economy). They always have.

“AI” as currently hyped is giant billion dollar companies blatantly stealing content, disregarding licenses, deceiving about capabilities, and burning the planet in the process.

It is the largest theft of intellectual property in the history of humankind, and these companies are knowingly and willing ignoring the licenses, terms of service, and laws that us lowly individuals are beholden to.
