The Hebrew word for giving, natan (נתנ), is a palindrome, which reveals a deep truth about the reciprocal dynamic of giving: When one gives, they also receive in return.
In a recent study, researchers discovered that those who spent more of their income on others rather than themselves enjoyed significantly greater and longer lasting happiness. In fact, as little as a five-dollar gift was enough to produce measurable increases in one’s happiness. Overall, the self-reported happiness of those who regularly give charity is forty-three percent higher than those who don’t.
In other words, human beings are hardwired to give.

Right now, all donations to the Texas Observer will be matched. Please support our work, if you can—please boost even if you can't afford to give right now.
Today I learned that LEGO has a program where you can send them your old LEGO (bricks, pieces, mini-figs, etc). LEGO will then take them in, wash / sterilize them, and donate them to children in need!
Ooh! Bless their kind plastic hearts! And covert product endorsements
Seriously, though.
Lego bricks are toys for children to learn and have fun. And, more importantly, non-biodegradable pieces of plastic that, because of the amount of plastic entering the environment, when the children of today become tomorrow's adults, will wish that the adults of today hadn't bought them so much plastic stuff.
Hi! 👋 While I've been on Mastodon for a few months, I'm new to sciences.social, so this is an #Introduction.
I study #nonprofit organizations and charitable #giving and how they are affected by public policy. I am interested in understanding giving as a form of #altruism that can be affected by things like #tax treatment of charitable gifts, #inequality, and the behaviors of the receiving charities and other #institutions.
It boggles the mind how much kindness surrounds us, how so many give to their communities each day, and how little they seek any recognition for doing so
“Stunt philanthropy” – things like the viral ALS challenge that you may remember – has more recently been associated with a single influencer: Jimmy Donaldson, a YouTuber called “#MrBeast” who often creates viral videos that raise awareness and money for people in need.
It’s hard to predict what the future holds for stunt #philanthropy, but it seems that it’s probably here to stay.
@TheConversationUS he cracked the Matrix. He saw young people put their eyeballs primarily in two places: the rich and the dumb so he combined massive wealth and algorithmically perfected clickbait and laughed his way to the bank.
@TheConversationUS Personally I'm not a fan of these things. But also, I believe charity is unconditionally good, so props to MrBeast for helping people in any way.
