The Hebrew word for giving, natan (נתנ), is a palindrome, which reveals a deep truth about the reciprocal dynamic of giving: When one gives, they also receive in return.

In a recent study, researchers discovered that those who spent more of their income on others rather than themselves enjoyed significantly greater and longer lasting happiness. In fact, as little as a five-dollar gift was enough to produce measurable increases in one’s happiness. Overall, the self-reported happiness of those who regularly give charity is forty-three percent higher than those who don’t.

In other words, human beings are hardwired to give.

Maybe you’re thinking of making a donation to charity before the end of the year? May I suggest checking out the recommendations by The Life You can Save, Give Well or Giving What we Can? The recommended charities have been vetted for effectiveness. So you get the most good for your buck. BTW I can also recommend the book The Life You Can Save by Peter Singer

In general, how do you feel about exchanging holiday and birthday gifts? Only say you're neutral if you're truly 50/50. We all have specific contexts where we see rituals as burdensome or affirming.

I find getting gifts exhausting because I've never needed much to enjoy life, but even when I get something I have no use for, I'm naturally inclined to try and find a creative use for it. Discovering novel uses for unwanted things is something I find joy in.

That was fun and challenging for years, but eventually the backlog of stuff overwhelms you and ever since 2020, I've maxed out on my ability to deal with any stress I don't need to deal with even if it's creative stress.

I used to enjoy giving gifts though and I think I will get back there again, but because I'm so allergic to getting stuff myself I put a lot of thought and energy into it and I just don't have that kind of time and energy lately.

Today I learned that LEGO has a program where you can send them your old LEGO (bricks, pieces, mini-figs, etc). LEGO will then take them in, wash / sterilize them, and donate them to children in need!

They even pay for the shipping for you.

If you want to know more, you can check out their website here: https://www.lego.com/en-us/sustainability/environment/replay

My sweet friend Corvin is facing cancer treatment, and as an American who isn't independently wealthy of course there's a GoFundMe. If you're still looking for #giving and #MutualAid opportunities, a hard-working adjunct professor in Iowa whose uterus went full freakout mode isn't a bad place to go. https://www.gofundme.com/f/30vse7dt3c?utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet&utm_medium=copy_link_all&utm_source=customer

Hi! 👋 While I've been on Mastodon for a few months, I'm new to sciences.social, so this is an #Introduction.

I study #nonprofit organizations and charitable #giving and how they are affected by public policy. I am interested in understanding giving as a form of #altruism that can be affected by things like #tax treatment of charitable gifts, #inequality, and the behaviors of the receiving charities and other #institutions.

“Stunt philanthropy” – things like the viral ALS challenge that you may remember – has more recently been associated with a single influencer: Jimmy Donaldson, a YouTuber called “” who often creates viral videos that raise awareness and money for people in need.

It’s hard to predict what the future holds for stunt , but it seems that it’s probably here to stay.

Are You Giving Too Much In Your Relationships?
https://youtu.be/Y9dAfdKPZhI

TiffaneyMooreBorgelin,

In my latest YouTube video about radical self-care, I examine the merits of giving and altruism and the dangers of extreme altruism. Well, when the water flows through the pipe, the pipe gets wet to. So, I’m sharing because researching this topic reminded me that self-care is not a destination, especially for givers. It is definitely an ongoing journey. Stay the course. ❤️
