Second phone call of the day: "Help, the server is no longer reachable, and the internet connection is down! We're completely stuck!"
Knowing the location and type of their server room, I asked, "Have you sent someone to check?" They replied, "Not yet, but we're sending a colleague right away." Five minutes later, their colleague called, embarrassed: "Sorry, the cleaning staff were in the room, and to clean better, they UNPLUGGED THE SERVERS FROM THE OUTLETS (the UPS units are in another room), to lift the cables and clean better."
You know, outsourcing server management and monitoring can really help companies step up their IT game. When you work with specialized service providers, they can use their expertise to make sure your tech infrastructure runs like a well-oiled machine....
You wouldn't write a system that uses 'SELECT *'' in every call for data?
Right?
RIGHT?
You wouldn't then wonder why the **** it takes so long to load everything, when multiple users are doing queries when of the endlessly growing number of fields and rows, you need almost none of the data...
RIGHT????
And then dare to charge someone for this 'development' skill and service?
University computer systems that don't work. HR registration system is different to our regular UTas systems. When something goes wrong. IT support says contact HR. HR support says contact IT. I'm in corporate password hell. #ITSupport
Did some octogenarian IT support today. Pulled out a couple of classic trouble-shooting techniques:
• Reboot (didn’t help)
• Log in as a different user and see if that account has the same problem (very useful this time!)
Pro tip going forward: Make sure the Safari “Develop” menu is disabled on your clients’ computers 😄
IMHO For user satisfaction, most places have it upside down.
You want your most technical people on the front line (picking up phones, replying to email, answering chat) able to resolve issues without transferring.
Let your least experienced tech go deskside. Remember, chances are that end-user has spent hours struggling with this box-that-sits-on-their-desk-making-them-question-their-intelligence. The end user is frustrated beyond belief. So, seeing a tech (even a green one) struggle and have to call in for advice will console their egos.
Client (a bit clumsy but positive and honest) calls: "Help! Just came back from lunch break and accidentally deleted all files on the file server!"
Me, unfazed: "Alright, besides you, who else worked on the file server during lunch break?"
Client: "No one, we were all away and I'm the first one back. Others will be back by 15:00"
Me, looking at the clock and noticing it's 14:30: "Okay, what time did you go to lunch?"
Client: "At 13:30. How long will it take to restore from the backup? Do you think we'll be able to work tomorrow?"
Me, without flinching as I type "zfs rollback *dataset-13:45-snapshot": "Done"
Client: "All the files reappeared!"
Me: "Thank #ZFS, #FreeBSD, and whoever set up automatic snapshots every 15 minutes."
#itsupport
#IT question of the day. When dealing with terminated #WFH employees, how do you get them to return equipment in a timely manner? We have #employees that will not send #equipment even after disabling the devices and continuously communicating they need to be returned.
I see a few services cropping up that deal with this, but with a starting price of $200 per #laptop it seems a bit high.
If we are going to move away from logmein for ad hoc remote connections to customer computers to something else, (partly for $$ reasons) that is EASY for the end user to give us access, what do you recommend? It needs to be something we can set up easy access to remote users as required, while assisting said users, including users who we have not connected to before.
TeamViewer? Zoho assist? AnyDesk? I know @sylmobile got a couple of suggestions recently, that I have not found in a quick search.. It is mainly connecting to Windows PCs, occasional Macs...
I posted on Facebook about some of my tech issues and setting up my new fileserver and I got a lot of confusion from my followers as to what I was talking about. Can you tell I rarely post tech stuff to there? #computernerd#tech#linux#ubuntu#it#itsupport#homelab
Monday marks 20 years since my business became Ltd. In that 20 years we’ve insisted on doing things differently to other #itsupport companies. We’re still going, still profitable, still investing and have no plans to go anywhere. Many of our earliest customers are still with us.
It’s moments like this that remind me that despite how it can sometimes feel, we must be doing something right otherwise we’d never have made it 20 years.
Your buying The Wrong Thing to solve your problem, is not really my problem.
I can advise you on how to solve Your Problem (that you created) but you have to make the decision on which option to pick to solve or mitigate Your Problem.
