But it's also not entirely @gruber's fault because the media doesn't really talk about the Fediverse, and when they do, it's as a synonym for "Mastodon".
How would @gruber know about the massive development efforts to build more user-friendly alternatives to Mastodon?
No one in the media talks about the growth of *key apps, and how they're now the #2 most used Fediverse platform.
The main reason why I can't move from my current #Pleroma installation to anything else ( #Akkoma, #Misskey, #Calckey, #Hubzilla or #Friendica ) is that none of them accept importing an existing backup from a different service into a brand-new account. At most you can migrate your address but not your posts.
Misskey turns their off by default (you can easily turn it on within settings) & Mastodon requires you to implement the #ElasticSearch code on your instance. I use search on both of my solo instances.
Misskey does not have an official app, but #MissRirica replicates most (if not all) of the options on the web interface (something most official apps on other platforms can not do yet).
I’d like to thank everyone on calckey.social for the overwhelming love and support.
When I woke up this morning, I had no idea that interest in #Calckey would pick up this much. It’s been a challenge getting everything up to our preferred standard, but we’ve made significant progress.
I’d also like to thank all the other Calckey servers who’ve picked up our slack. And the entire dev team deserves praise for making software that so many people love.
It seems like it is a rewrite/alternative server to the mastodon server. Looks to be written in Rust. It is a fork of #misskey, which seems to be written in typsescript
But since it uses ActvityPub, it's interoperable with Mastodon
Seems like you can't migrate your Mastodon account over.
So basically an alternative microblogging interface to the fediverse with different server software.
I have an announcement for all Sakurajima (.moe and .social), Urusai.social, and Miruku.cafe users!
I just learned something that every #fediverse citizen user should know: When looking at a post or profile from an external instance that is not using the same platform as your instance, you should look at that post or profile on that instance. The reason why that is so important to know is because that not all instances will not display the complete post or profile of an external instance.
I learned this earlier today while discussing a few bugs with @panos and @naskya, mainly about reactions not going through.
I wanted to let everyone know about this because this is very important, especially since we're on different platforms: Urusai.social and Sakurajima.moe use glitch-soc (a variation of #Mastodon), meanwhile Sakurajima.moe and Miruku.cafe use #Calckey and #Foundkey (both variations of #Misskey) respectively. With everyone using different platforms and thinking that #ActivityPub would transfer everything over, there's bound to be misunderstandings.
That's why I wanted to let everyone know about this. #ThankYou all.
@llewelly@fediversenews Except that #Calckey was never based on Mastodon in the first place, but on #Misskey, which is a separately developed microblog service than Mastodon, even if one based on #ActivityPub and, as such compatible with the whole of the #Fediverse, Mastodon include.
That said, the Calckey team IS working on adding a #MastodonAPI compatibility layer to their webapp, but right now very little of it is supported. (Thanks @atomicpoet for that info, by the way. 😉)
Finally gotten #MissRirica to work on the #MacOS side of things! (Which will also translate to #Android if I use that version).
Bad News:
A. Ya need to generate an access token from the #Misskey instance you’re on via the web interface among the ‘Settings’ section.
B. Not surprisingly, the app’s interface is… Um…
🧵 #Calckey (1) A bit of background and experience if you're wondering about an explosion of chat
1️⃣ It's not new, it's a fork of #Misskey - big in Japan, with 300,000+ users in the #Fediverse :fediverse:
2️⃣ Very much early adoption for now imo, but tonnes of potential
Pros for me -
❤️ A gorgeous desktop UI plus a decent mobile PWA app
⭐ Some very cool features, Mastodon++, which I may post on more in time
👩💻 Fantastic responsive dev team support, I'm talking with 5-6 of them here & on Codeberg
✅ As it's a fork, it's pretty stable, think Beta-2
Why aren't I migrating yet?
🚫 There's no "Edit Post" yet. It's in development in phases. I'm involved in testing it ie not vaporware
⚠️ There's functionality to migrate posts between servers, but it's a bit "Beta-1" imo ... scope and server impacts
⚠️ Needs smoothing overall & 3rd-Party App development
And:
:ms_red_question_mark: As a user I'm unsure on maturity of admin-side tools
It looks decent, people are trying it - here's our Active User graph on calckey.social:
Some of y'all might have noticed that there is a bug where links are not being rendered properly. I have some good news and some bad news about this bug. The good news is that this bug has a fix; the #Misskey core team and contributors have already fixed this bug for Misskey back in November of last year. The bad news is that this fix may not come to #Calckey by the time this instance needs to be ready for wider use; the bug report I am following was opened in December, and TBH, I don't see a bug fix by the time Calckey v14 is released, which may be later than this instance will need be ready for wider use.
Either way, I'll still be tracking the bug report, and I will keep y'all posted.
I was just reading the discussion under #Mastodon's announcement about adding #quotes, and I found this observation interesting, so I'd like to quote @Valent's posts (since we already have this functionality in #Calckey 🥴).
I don't know if "quote posts" means something for Mastodon's terminology in the future, but one thing we did, a few months ago, as a fork of #Misskey, was to change our terminology from #Notes and #Renotes to #Posts and #Boosts. We also call our equivalent to a #Favorite a #Like (although we also have other emoji reactions). The idea behind this is that we want to promote the use of a more unified language across the #Fediverse, so that we can make communication between users on different #fedi platforms smoother. I think it's very important to try and co-exist in harmony in this unique and exciting federated universe, instead of every platform pushing their own "trademark" terminology, which mostly makes the experience more confusing for users discovering the #Fediverse. So I think that any change towards more common and self-explanatory terms on basic features would be a step in the right direction! :blobbonethumbsup:
For the first time ever, I’m torn about whether I should stay on mastodon.social.
Being here has given me a voice I’ve never had, to talk about a topic that I feel strongly about, and I feel I’ve made the world a slightly different place.
But I also wonder if mastodon.social is becoming even more hostile to the rest of the Fediverse.
Remember folks, if #Mastodon isn't for you, there are many other corners of the #fediverse.
#Pleroma#Akkoma#Misskey and #CalcKey: (mostly) compatible with Mastodon apps, admins can run various different front ends, support editing posts and quote posting.
Let me know if you're interested in any of these other platforms and I'll be happy to help.
So, for my further #fediverse journey, I dropped #Misskey from the list for the time being as it doesn’t offer account transfers, which I find essential. Remaining are #Friendica, #Calckey and potentially #Mastodon, would need to move to a hosted service for more characters, but still no markdown… Now thinking about self-hosting Friendica or Calckey and also #Pixelfed later down the line once it supports account migrations… Decisions, decisions….
🤣 I was showing one of my mutual followers how the $[x2 ...], $[x3 ...], and $[x4 ...] tags could be used to increase the heading's size on a #misskey/ #calckey post. I used the x3 tag to demonstrate this feature, and $[x3 it was HUGE!] I was surprised at how big it was, so I tried to tone it down a bit by using an $[x2 x2] tag, but it didn't show up on their calckey instance.
Calckey is a Fediverse server type which includes lots of features that Mastodon doesn't yet have, such as emoji reactions, markdown, customisable interfaces, widgets and lots more.
