I didn’t see this coming, but I’m pleased!

@jerry just announced that the infosec community now has their own server! You can join it here:

But I do help the community in whichever way I can.

All the cool kids are playing with calckey. I didn't want to left out, so introducing: https://infosec.town! (a new calckey instance)

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@adamhotep @jerry It’s not based on Mastodon. is a fork of , which is the 2nd most popular server software on the Fediverse.

I wonder if anyone has looked across platform themes yet, to identity which are pulling fonts, a serious tracking threat. Which platform is most resistant to and prioritising privacy?

Users should know if their instance is intentional about protecting them from surveillance .

Has anyone used ? is it any good? I like the UI more than mastodon. and it plays well with the fediverse.

Lots of good discussion on and going on. These four questions dominate my thinking:

  1. Can the ATProtocol really scale and federate? This is a very open question.

  2. Can BlueSky's ATProtocol moderation work at scale? Or even NOT at scale? Blurry still.

  3. Can the and improve its UX and UI experiences faster than the these first two things occur?

Lastly:

  1. How quickly do robust Fediverse/ATProtocol bridges emerge?

@tchambers @activitypubblueskybridge Please, stop speaking of the like it was only . Even if you limit yourself to , the Fediverse is larger than that! If you don't believe me, go take a look at & it's fork , or even one of the numerous of Mastodon.

@vruz @tchambers @activitypubblueskybridge Again, there is far more to the than just , and I'm NOT speaking of its forks. was here 2 years before Masto, we also have & , neither of which are based on Mastodon. (In fact, Calckey is a fork of Misskey)

    Hmm.. ..

    *mastodon.social
    *pb.todon.de
    *blog.fedi.tech ()
    *pixlfed.de
    *plasmatrap.com ()
    *im-in.space ()

    These are the most important ones iirc.
    (I have a & too, but barely use em 🤔 )
    The top 3 are the ones I use most often.

    queenslight,

    @cliffwade The main account I use is this one, while my second account is @queenslight, since I finally found a decent accessible interface for called WhaleBird.

    I am planning to join a instance too, for sharing random AI TTS skits I do from time to time.

    Work still needs to be done on the side of it, but at least this one has keyboard shortcuts and much of it just works!

    The only feature that matters for any social media experience is the people who are on it. I'm amazed at how many technology leaders forget this and get distracted by the underlying tech, protocols, features, etc.

    Elon is a great example. He thinks he bought a platform. But what he really bought was a community. And of the two, the community has degraded far more than the platform.

    arinbasu,

    @mike
    💯 with you!

    This is the isue with driven instances. The software is robust, but many sys admins are illiterate about the "social" constructs of what makes a networking stick, being geeks. Second, a lot of people who started with Mastodon in the first place claim they came here because they were 'mistreated' by others in twitter and Facebook for various reasons, they came up with peculiar provisions of no quote tweet, blocking people at the drop of a hat, rude words (like 'content warnings', why warning?). Besides, I avoid using Mastodon instances if I can because of most posters are very rude and hostile. On the other hand, most non-Mastodon instances have a relatively relaxed environment, and instances driven by for example, are designed to be fun to hang out with. No wonder ended up being a nice, friendly place to post ideas.

    Then under Musk is another level of purgatory!

    I’ve tried to understand what #Calckey and #Misskey are but I am kind of puzzled… are they like Mastodon forks? For blogging? I can’t seem to tell.

    I don't think it's wrong for other Fediverse projects, besides Mastodon, to exist.

    Especially since so many of them predate Mastodon.

    , which is what is based off, predates Mastodon by two years!

    Friendica started in 2010.

    GNU Social is even older.

    It's wild to me that so many folks believe Mastodon = Fediverse.

    atomicpoet,
    @atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

    People are really looking at the Fediverse with Western eyes and aren't considering the fact that in Japan, is many peoples' first exposure to the Fediverse.

    is building on what Misskey has already made. But really, Calckey is exposing the West to the world of *key apps.

    Today is the day I talk about what is and what it does. 🧵

    In this thread, I will explore what I believe to be the most important features of Calckey.

    SPOILER ALERT: While Calckey focuses on microblogging, that's where its similarities with (and ) end.

    @fediversenews

    queenslight,

    @atomicpoet They’re also on too.

    Hmmm, so that’s why they are called channels. Interesting!

    atomicpoet,
    @atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

    @LabSpokane @ai6yr Actually, is a fork of , which predates Mastodon by two years.

    The *key apps, as they are known, are the 2nd largest platform on the Fediverse.

    And no, there isn't "one good thing" on the Fediverse -- there are many. That's the point of the Fediverse. Mastodon is but one portion of this.

    If Mastodon works for you, great. But some people would prefer a different UI, or to have different features, or to interact with a different culture.

    atomicpoet,
    @atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

    @jupiter_rowland @nyquildotorg You're right about that. When I've come to , I realize that there's so much that need explaining.

    Hub has some documentation, and that helps. But now that has diverged, it needs to do the same.

    queenslight, to fediverse

    Eh there! @MonaApp

    Do you have a current list of supported platforms that your app supports somewhere?

    queenslight,

    @MonaApp Sadly, and/or isn’t.

    At least the instance I’m on over there isn’t. Unless I’m missing something?

    @queenslight

    , is the only Misskey instance I’m on. It gives me a 404 every time I try to connect using Mona.

    No worries if it’s not supported currently.

    atomicpoet, to fediversenews
    @atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

    This take is annoying.

    But it's also not entirely @gruber's fault because the media doesn't really talk about the Fediverse, and when they do, it's as a synonym for "Mastodon".

    How would @gruber know about the massive development efforts to build more user-friendly alternatives to Mastodon?

    No one in the media talks about the growth of *key apps, and how they're now the #2 most used Fediverse platform.

    That story isn't being told.
