#askfedi
So… welcome to new users in the #Fediverse network!
If you are exploring the fediverse through the #Mastodon software, feel free to explore other platforms like #Streams#Calckey#Hubzilla#Friendica#Akkoma to mention a few, for your usual “status updates” (and more) UI/UX.
If you want a platform more focused on photos and images, then there is #Pixelfed. Or, you want bookshelves and tracking what you've read, or leaving #book reviews, there is #BookWyrm.
But the beauty of it all, all of these are connected to the fediverse. You can follow any user regardless of which software they are using; AND regardless which server (domain name) they signed-up for.
Interesting features in this one: language autodetect (you'll need to update to the latest electron build), new options on user profiles, accounts reorganization and some fixes too!
Are there any #fediverse platforms that don't compress or others ruin image uploads? #mastodon reduces many images to under 2000 pixels in either direction, usually in the 1600-1800 range from what I've seen.
Does any #Fediverse software allow someone to restrict who can @ mention them? Or is that just generally fair game? If always allowed, is that a vector for pile-on-style harassment?
TIL there's limit to how many people you can follow with #ActivityPub. No one seems to specify what it is, but it could be as low as a couple thousand. I already follow 1.1k!
I was REALLY disappointed to see the GoFundMe for a non-federating CalcKey instance for Black Fediverse users (supported by some of the most important Fediverse founders besides the LGBTQ+ ones) was shut down. It is nearly impossible for Black folx to use the Mastodon Network. It NEEDS to be easier. To this end I have started a new #Pleroma fork named #Melanoma.
Features:
runs on lower hardware specs like feature phones
easy installation via Verizon App Store
named after the most powerful chemical compound in the universe, melanin
Ever since upgrading #Pleroma, the newly added popovers aren’t working with my theme. I added CSS that should get it working, but it doesn’t. Not sure what to do here.
I'm really pleased to see so much variety in the #ActivityPub space, but I'm not sure that having more and more #pleroma and #Misskey forks, none of which seem to have a solid reliable management structure, is that great an idea.
#Threads is an app trying to play nice with the Fediverse while attempting to keep all of its corporate shenanigans intact, and keep full control out of the people's hands. Typical.
There's this other place, actually many other places. It's called the #Fediverse where you are not funneled into corporate algorithms and have full control of what you want to see.
As far as admins being unkind to each other, I wonder if this is more of a #Mastodon & (to a lesser degree) #Pleroma cultural issue‽
I rarely see any hostility amongst #Pixelfed or #Misskey users, as both communities emphasize politeness & respect towards each other. I wonder why some platforms are friendlier than others‽
Google provides a tool called PageSpeed Insights which gives a website some metrics to assess how well it is put together and how fast it loads. There are a lot of technical details but in general green scores are good, orange not great and red is bad.
I tried to ensure the tests were similar for each platform by choosing a page that shows a list of posts, like https://mastodon.social/explore.
The rest don’t seem to have prioritized performance or chose a software architecture that cannot be made to perform well on these metrics. It will be very interesting to see how that affects the cost of running large instances and the longevity of the platforms. Time will tell.
Wait, #Pleroma has a thing where instance admins can manage emoji collections with a package manager? Does it just use the URL once and forget it or does it set up a chron job to check for updates? Is there a way to set up an auto-updater for #Sharkey? I don't want to bother @Kitty every time @volpeon adds new ones.
