Today in Labor History February 18, 1970: A jury found the Chicago Seven not guilty of conspiring to incite riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. However, Judge Julius Hoffman still convicted all the defendants with contempt and sentenced them to jail time ranging from 3 months to over 4 years. These were all reversed on appeal. Black Panther Bobby Seale had been a codefendant, but his case was declared a mistrial. Judge Hoffman had ordered him physically gagged during the trial.

Today in Labor History February 9, 1886: President Cleveland declared martial law in Seattle because of anti-Chinese violence instigated by the Knights of Labor. The union, which was one of the first to organize workers of different ethnicities, as well as women, was notorious for their anti-Chinese sentiment. They participated in numerous other anti-Chinese riots and supported the xenophobic Chinese Exclusion Act.

Today in Labor History January 14, 1914: The trial of Suhr and Ford began on this date in Marysville, California. Suhr and Ford were IWW organizers who were ultimately convicted for their alleged role in the gun battle at Durst Ranch in Wheatland. Four died in the so-called “Wheatland riots” (Aug 1913) when police fired into a crowd of California farmworkers trying to organize with the IWW. The dead included the district attorney and sheriff, as well as two farm workers. The governor called in the national guard to restore order. At the time, Durst Ranch was the largest employer of agricultural laborers in the state. They grew hops for the British beer industry. Durst regularly hired seasonal pickers in the summers, forcing them to live in tents on a hot, barren hillside. Conditions were unsanitary. The closest water was a mile away. Durst’s brother exploited workers further by selling them overpriced lemonade, in lieu of water. They had to pay 75 cents per week in rent. Wages were under $1.50/day and Durst withheld 10% of each worker’s wages as insurance against them quitting before harvest season ended.

Today in Labor History December 2, 1947: Jerusalem Riots. Following the vote in the UN General Assembly in favor of the 1947 UN Partition Plan on 11/29/1947, the Arab Higher Committee declared a three-day General Strike to begin on 2 December 1947. Arab protesters burned many buildings and shops in the city center. Violence continued for two more days, with a number of Jewish neighborhoods being attacked. As a result, the Haganah Jewish paramilitary organization decided to use force to "stop future attacks on Jews". The Irgun paramilitary (an offshoot of the Haganah) conducted armed attacks against nearby Arab villages and a bombing campaign against Arab civilians. Irgun policy was based on Revisionist Zionism: “every Jew had the right to enter Palestine; only active retaliation would deter the Arabs; only Jewish armed force would ensure the Jewish state." The Irgun also helped with the illegal immigration of Jews from Europe to Palestine prior to World War II. This was part of what Zionist leader Ze'ev Jabotinsky called the "National Sport:" illegally bringing millions of European Jews to Palestine, all at once, to populate what they hoped to become the new Jewish state.

The European Network's Brian Milne describes how last week's riots in Dublin are not an isolated incident.

Right wing and hardcore nationalist groups are receiving support from organisations that claim to be respectable patriotic bodies. One such organisation in Ireland is Gript Media who claim their purpose is to report the news then comment on it in a manner they claim is honest, frank and open.

Riots, looting, and fires are currently happening in Dublin, following a distressing violent crime.

Racist remarks and far right ideologies are being shared on social media in association with the violence.

A number of gardaí have been attacked and a garda vehicle set alight near Parnell Square in Dublin, following an earlier knife attack on a woman and children.

Very traumatic for victims and witnesses.
A worrying time for Ireland 😔

Decoding an evil

The systematic mendacity which shrouds communal violence in India, going back to the Indira Gandhi era, can be considered a classic case of ‘misrecognition’, writes Asim Ali.
