Another discussion that I think is also, at least in part, about user-experience (UX) challenges with signing-up and onboarding.

The lemmyverse recently put together an event inspired by the /r/place event on reddit.

Users can put a pixel down every 30 seconds (or 1 minute if it's replacing someone else's pixel) and everyone is working from the same canvas at once.

This was the final result.

There's a familiar face in the bottom corner :)

It is already federating with (https://azorius.net/g/tech@kbin.social) and (https://azorius.net/g/linux@lemmy.ml)

It is written in and is under active development (https://humungus.tedunangst.com/r/azorius/h)

Mastodon certainly has a lot of creative, unique apps. You can definitely find a fit just for you.

But I think the is having it's own golden era right now with a plethora of choices for us finicky users. The best list I could find for is attached, but it's still missing a few newcomers, like @bean

Nothing near as comprehensive for yet (the API is still getting it's legs) but there is the amazing @ArtemisApp

unplugged,

I used & for a couple days on a measured rate internet connection and it sucked ~2gb of my credit (half my credit for a month). Yikes. I don’t know which one did the damage but I suspect kbin since I had images disabled on the browser I used for lemmy. I guess I’ll have to step away from the until I find a text-based linux app for one of them.

“view context” broken b̶e̶c̶a̶u̶s̶e̶ (and) lemmy.world has just joined Cloudflare (unrelated)

I was trying to work out why it is that when I receive a notification and I click “view context” nothing happens if the msg came from lemmy.world. The screen blinks for a second but gives no prior posts. Well after digging into this, I see that #lemmyWorld has just recently joined the exclusive #walledGarden of Cloudflare....

It’s restricted access. See the screenshot on the OP.

BTW, Cloudflare is also , thus defeating the purpose of the .

(edit) What’s a “walled garden” to you, if not restricted access?

diyrebel, (edited ) to lemmy_support in “view context” broken b̶e̶c̶a̶u̶s̶e̶ (and) lemmy.world has just joined Cloudflare (unrelated)

Ah, thanks for the info. But note that there are two “show context” buttons. In principle, if I am on a broken version I should be able to visit the parent on the originating node & possibly side-step the bug. But in this case the other node blocks me (Cloudflare).

Also note that I would still like a way to block CF instances. I’m in the to participate in the free world & prefer not to feed centralized walled gardens from which I am a refugee. Oppressors should not be able to thrive in the .

is centralized in 2 ways:

  • Cloudflare
  • disproportionate user population

settles on its big central instance: lemmy.world () run by @ruud

Its numbers are now big enough to be counted amongst the top 5-10 masto instances! (https://fedidb.org/network/instance/lemmy.world) as become the “second platform” by size.

Apart from running it well and keeping up to date (recent update seems to have gone well, with a nice example of instances and admins helping each other!?), some redditers seek the big instances?? Curious how communities will adapt.

Good news for the :

Today launched and this week we also see the first public beta of for by @hariette.

My first impression of sync: it's good, it allows me to use the way I used . Don't know how much better it gets with an Account, as I only have one for kbin. Some apps only allow limited home instances without an account, here I can freely choose whichever.

Personally am more excited to try Artemis

I've left a comment on the original GitHub issue thread re
-like awards to Lemmy to help fund instance infrastructure that references @ada and @supakaity 's response to said suggestion being raised in a Lemmy post. The short answer is no thanks.

I see there’s no / community. Anyone interested in starting one up? Or maybe there’s another better place (aside from Mastodon) that people thread stuff? I’m happy to start it but kinda new to the whole community as it is. That and I already admin/mod a few communities.

@useless_modern_god yup... I used to be very active on Reddit between 2017-2019, experimented briefly with Mastodon in 2018, but moved here pretty permanently when Space Karen bought Twitter last year. it's been fascinating watching the new waves each time he does a new idiotic thing, and the wave was even more exciting as it brought a different crowd and boosted the , which is really good for the Fediverse ecosystem. I'm now experimenting with but am not sold yet, though the UI is very slick.

SO MUCH BETTER.

I assume it doesn't work if your account is on a kbin server but i dunno. mine's on a lemmy one.

I have the domain name notroot.social but I'm not doing anything with it right now.

I'd like to set up another project there (I was running , before) ... but I'm not sure what to try.

I was thinking about but it sounds like a big PITA and I already have a account at lemmy.sdf.org

So then I was thinking about (nee, ) but that's what this account is.

Any other suggestions of fun fedi to play with?

0ri, to random

The biggest issue with the - findability. The second biggest issue is issues.

Still early days, I get it - but using search engines outside of your home instance (e.g., https://sub.rehab/ or https://browse.feddit.de/ ) to find magazines is bad enough, but then for an instance to not federate with the one that a magazine is hosted on is another.

I'm also of the mind that the aforementioned instances should be removed from searches for breaking federation.

Kinda funny considering got the ml domain to mean Marxist-Leninist but they're probably gonna get fucked by re-nationalisation of the Mali country TLD.

@idoubtit I’m on Lemmy.world but not kbin but I can actively view kbin.social and post to their magazines. Are you maybe on 2 instances that aren’t federated with each other?
