Saint Mungo gazing out across Pollokshaws Road from Saint Ninian's Church in Glasgow, with the fish with the ring in its mouth below him, and the remains of a tram rosette (used to support electrical wires for Glasgow's tram system) just to his left. I've often wondered what people made of these being attached to churches when they were first installed at the end of the 19th Century.
An old tram track embedded in a cobbled lane behind the former Coplawhill Tram Shed in the Pollokshields area of Glasgow. Built in 1893, this depot closed in the 1960s, and now houses The Tramway, an internationaly renowned arts venue.
Some good news for anyone who loves RMTransit's public transport explainer videos, but doesn't like Google and YouTube.
Looks like @RM_Transit now has an account on PeerTube here, which you can follow from Mastodon: @reece
(If you're the first to follow the account from your instance it will initially appear empty. Videos will start appearing in your feed after you follow.)
This George Street tram is useful, but IMO the CBD stops are too far apart. It's a fair walk if you happen to be halfway between some stops (eg QVB and Wynyard). #Sydney#Trams#Tram
A new piece by me for Explore - in Lisbon I caught a bright yellow tram to historic neighbourhoods, as part of tour utilising both tramways and walking...
Today I've been writing an article about a tour I took in Lisbon, which involved a trip on one of its excellent little yellow trams. They are the best.
Pleasantly surprised to have one more story published in 2023... and this time I'm exploring the delights of Melbourne beaches BY TRAM (ie the only way to travel). Includes dining tips. Enjoy!
For those unfamiliar with it, Lemmy is basically a federated version of Reddit, distributed across multiple servers like Mastodon. (For anyone who wants to delve further, lemmy.ml, beehaw.org, and aussie.zone are three popular Lemmy instances.)
From Mastodon, you can follow any Lemmy group by following its handle, exactly the same way that you would follow a Mastodon account. Any new posts to that group will then begin appearing in your Mastodon feed.
Even better, if you start a thread on Mastodon, you can also post it to a relevant Lemmy group just by including its handle in your post. (Please note this only seems to work with the first post of a thread.)
From my blog ten (EDIT: nine, not ten) years ago today:
‘The full DTF document is worth reading for future reference: in summary it says tram lines should cost in the region of $15 million per kilometre, with additional costs for platform stops ($1.7m each), works for major intersections ($2.8m each), substations (for extensions over 5 kilometres $5m each) and terminus works ($5m each).’ #Melbourne#PublicTransport#trams https://danielbowen.com/2014/11/19/tram-extension-costs/
When Newcastle had Australia's longest tram route.
Here's a really interesting look at the very extensive tram network that used to exist in Newcastle, stretching as far west as West Wallsend and as far south as Lake Macquarie.
Sadly, the original tram network was ripped up in 1950.
Dear #Malaysia, I know you want to bring the LRT to #Penang. I think it is a good idea but of course not in Georgetown itself. But how about trams? Please ignore the people who complain they need to drive on the roads. Trams could bring so much value, business and beauty to Georgetown!!
Ps: we used to have trams I Penang until they were displaced by, what else, cars.
Barrière de #StGilles is one of the most infamous places in terms of #mobility in #Brussels. A complete makeover is coming up: #trams will cross the roundabout instead of going around, safer pedestrian crossings, some green, no more traffic lights or cobblestones. Detailed plans are available here: https://openpermits.brussels/fr/_13/PFD/1903271
Hey, Melburnians! There's community consultation going on right now for the Route 82 & 86 trams, focusing on upgrading more stops to have level boarding. They are probably going to reduce the number of tram stops in these sections as part of upgrading them to level boarding, and of course as with anything to do with street-running trams, there is going to be conflicts between cars & parking and any proposed stops. Make sure we get the best outcomes for all tram passengers and have your say before 15 October! :dingdingpixel: #trams#melbourne https://engage.vic.gov.au/route-82-planning https://engage.vic.gov.au/route-86-planning
