Tens of M4.5+ #earthquakes have occurred in the last few days near the #Izu islands, with a small 30 cm #tsunami observed after the largest M6.1 event. This region has known submarine #volcanoes, but no unusual volcanic activity has of yet been observed according to the local news.

My wife was telling me about the catastrophic Laki eruption of 1783/84 in Iceland (she heard about it on NPR'S ThroughLine and then looked it up), and the resulting worldwide crop failures, famine, and climate change. I can't help but wonder if it was the inspiration for M.P. Shiel's 1901 fantasy novel "The Purple Cloud." I also wonder why neither of us had previously heard of this major natural disaster.

Glow from an incandescent rockfall at the erupting Mt Mayon volcano. Philippine authorities have put the volcano under Alert Level 3, indicating an increased likelihood of a hazardous eruption.
