Tens of M4.5+ have occurred in the last few days near the islands, with a small 30 cm observed after the largest M6.1 event. This region has known submarine , but no unusual volcanic activity has of yet been observed according to the local news.

My wife was telling me about the catastrophic Laki eruption of 1783/84 in Iceland (she heard about it on NPR'S ThroughLine and then looked it up), and the resulting worldwide crop failures, famine, and climate change. I can't help but wonder if it was the inspiration for M.P. Shiel's 1901 fantasy novel "The Purple Cloud." I also wonder why neither of us had previously heard of this major natural disaster.
