Twitter ad free $16/month

Mastodon ad free $0/month

Shoot out to all Mastodon admins out there !! ❤️

0xF21D,

@jan I donate $8 a month to my mastodon instance because Elon said $8 was reasonable. Sounds like I need to increase that amount to $16. I’m glad Elon thinks so.

My experience so far with microblogging services:

Threads: I'm in a wrong party and don't know what to say. I feel awkward, everyone is so happy with their gym selfies. Everyone asking endless questions and asking things from the algorithm. Lots of people use it like Instagram, every post is a selfie with a meaningless caption. Some are copy-pasting the same sentence over and over again for each line. Endless quote-post memes... What the fuck is this shit I don't even...

Bluesky: A Twitter clone, but still very barebones. Notifications are still not working, there are no hashtags and I don't find any relevant content to me in any of the feeds. It's mostly Facebook-like what's up in life, furry scene and AI photos. No news, no tech/web scene, no nothing. Not to mention it's still invite-only and won't support ActivityPub (yeah I know the reasoning behind that but for me it's mostly bullshit, I look forward to trying bridgy fed).

Mastodon and the Fediverse: Here I'm at home on my own server. Most content, most features. A community is friendly but has also lots of nitpicking, some angry dudes. Still the most safest, most healthy and most customized, but somehow the most hated network elsewhere. "Too techie", they say. "Too difficult", they say. "No algorithm", they say.

Nostr: Kinda promising, but way too obscure, strange and even techier than Mastodon. Too much crypto shit.

Well, that's that. Sometimes I feel like Internet is ruined. But I believe in the open social web movement and I want to see this grow.

In no other place I can write a status update as freely as this, as long as this or with a low bar as this. I LIKE this 100%. The same can't be said in those other places I'm experimenting with out of curiosity. There I'm the weird kid. Here I feel like myself.

0xF21D,

@agasramirez @rolle I think it’s the lack of an algorithm like on that bird site where the amplification skewed negative. This seems to encourage healthier conversation. That’s been my experience at least, as a rando replying to this because someone boosted it, :)

I have and made my own toy because nothing for sale has real toggles and pots. Or even little red push buttons. I’m going to make more. Yay fidget toys!

Same as the other picture but I’m holding it in my hand.

No matter how the Fediverse turns on me, I will never stop saying that APPLE SUCKS https://www.theverge.com/2023/10/19/23924549/jon-stewart-apple-ai-china-cancel

0xF21D,

@ryanhoulihan at some point apple morphed into just another shitty conglomerate. Everything they do is in the conglomerate playbook. They are no longer unique, and I can’t wait to hear Jon Stewart’s side of this tale.

This whole "real names in open source" discussion is kinda amusing to me, because at one point I was in the credits of a project under three separate names.

I just got a complaint about my #photography posts, which I concluded came from a troll, but perhaps I’m actually coming off in a way that rubs people the wrong way here.

The complaint was that by posting high resolution images and describing in detail the processes used to create them, I’m merely “showing off” in a way that isn’t useful to most people.

I indeed do rather niche photography, using relatively esoteric gear. I think some people are interested in process and enjoy the results.

0xF21D,

@mattblaze I hope that the people who nerd out with your posts outweigh the detractors. I’m not into photography but I love learning the recipes. :)

I'm reaching out to the mastodon community to find out if there's anyone in the Houston, Texas area that will be holding an exam session. I tried the Facebook route but that failed miserably and I don't trust the exam session listings. Are their any volunteer examiners in the Houston area that can help steer me in the right direction outside of MeetUp and Facebook. :)

Thank you!

0xF21D,

@davep @mattblaze I'm going to try the online route. @ai6yr pointed me to hamstudy.org and there's online sessions listed.

0xF21D,

@knowattitude @ai6yr @k8vsy I signed ip for a testing session with GLAARG next weekend.

0xF21D,

@ai6yr I was wondering if remote/online was a thing. I'll check this out. Thank you!

If you use , and I really think you should consider using over or , there are a few
outside of ad blockers that you really should consider using on a daily basis because it'll make your life easier and more secure.

  • Multi-Account Containers lets you define a number of containers. Each container has its own cookie store so you can isolate your accounts. You can force your social media into a single account and reduce your tracking footprint. Default containers for sites will force open a site in a specific container.

  • Cookie Quick Manager give you full control of your cookies and it functions seamlessly with Multi-Account containers.

  • Tree Style Tab is the grouping extension that puts Google and MSEdge side tab and tab grouping behavior to shame. Unfortunately it doesn't eliminate the tabs up top but if you are willing to forgive it for that one visual weakness it's a fantastic way to organize your daily life.

Honorable Mention:

  • SingleFile will save an entire page with all its images and layout to a single HTML file. Forget "saving to pocket" when you can have a file, you can then apply your own search preferences to that file.
0xF21D, to random

For people doing , do you regularly use a vpn connection for accessing target websites or accounts? What about virtual machines or other kinds of isolation?

    0xF21D,

@jonty I like carrying around a geiger when I go to antique shops. I also love to comment loudly on the spicyness of the selection of radioactive red fiestaware on display.

I have an old CD survey meter where the needle counts in rem instead of mrem, and that's a great conversation piece about how you never want to see that needle move. :D

Oh and yeah, here's another fun fact to thunk on. I saw a think piece on a news service on how everyone should have a bugout bag at the ready. It wasn't about civil unrest though, it was about climate change and extreme weather.

    Yes. I agree.

But, it's reached that level now.

    We doomed.

    0xF21D,

@krypt3ia a certain amount of planning for self-sufficiency in a crisis is good. Having a plan on what to do and a bug out bag or at least knowing what to pack makes a difference.

Looking up tips on such things is a fast deep slide into the whole SHTF zombie apocalypse "prepper community" and it just gets insane from there.

@lcamtuf IMHO it’s either going to be dystopian nightmare (unlikely) or a ghost town of a project that ends up rotting away under the California sun as a magnet for YouTube urbex channels.

We like to use up and move on here in the US instead of re-using what we already have. Why not just invest in a community that’s already established to improve quality of life? I guess that’s not “effectively altruistic” enough.
