William Anders, astronaut on the Apollo 8 mission, passed away earlier today.

Anders took the iconic Earthrise photo while orbiting the Moon with Borman and Lovell. No human had ever seen an Earthrise before.

On the transmission he says "Oh my God, look at that picture over there! It's the Earth coming up. Wow, is that pretty!"

This now-famous building in Istanbul (Constantinople) has a history spanning centuries, with each floor representing a different era. The foundation is a Roman cistern, which was forgotten and buried due to earthquakes and rising ground levels.

In Roman and Byzantine times, the area was bustling with merchants, and the cistern likely served their needs. Nearby is a historical bath used by Janissaries in 15th-16th Centuries, which may have also been supplied by the cistern during that time.

The man is speaking partially in Arabic and then in English, when border guards tell him to “go” in English, then he switches back to Arabic. Subtitles are in Polish.

Want to understand the phenomenon of increasing popularity of right-wing parties in Europe? They do speak about this problem (even if they themselves are sexists) while left-wing activists speak of “no human being illegal” in the context of legalising this entirely illegal and forced entry into EU.

Discussions with Russian patriots of all status almost always follow a script. “Russia does not attack civilian targets”. You post a picture of Ukrainian cities turned into a pile of rubble? “It’s the Ukraine itself.” You post a video from RT where a Russian tank is carefully pounding on apartment blocks in Mariupol? “Apparently it’s the right thing to do, after the war we’ll rebuild everything” (note the smooth sliding off the denial). Etc etc.

And then news like the one below, where pro-Russian residents of Ilovaysk, occupied since 2015, are once again begging (how else) to rebuild their homes, which have been destroyed for 10 years, comes in handy. This is where they usually go quiet or start mumbling something about “war time difficulties”.

Russian propaganda operates with mental shortcuts; it is the antithesis of the scientific method or any systematic analysis. It is the endless repetition on TV, the pseudo-arguments in pseudo-debates that serve to build these schemes. Pseudo-experts toss up popular points of contention (e.g. destroyed houses) and others respond convincingly with these catchy phrases (“we will rebuild”) that get cemented into audience’s brains.

Posts like the one below are perhaps one of the best forms of deconstructing these patterns, as they remind Russians not only that the authorities are not fulfilling any promises given to the inhabitants of the “new territories” but, more significantly, remind them of what their own streets look like in their own cities far from the front line.

❗ "Ze względu na wartość przyrodniczą tego obszaru w latach 90. wycofano się z planów wydobycia, jednak po latach pomysł powrócił i w 2017 roku wydano koncesję wydobywczą, poprzedzoną decyzją środowiskową, wydaną przez Regionalną Dyrekcję Ochrony Środowiska. Te zapadliska zbierać będą wodę z okolic, powodując osuszanie sąsiednich obszarów. Ogromne ilości wody będą musiały być stale wyprowadzane na zewnątrz systemem kanałów i przepompowni.
