Why is it that the people who brag about being "self-made" aren't?

If you turned out successful odds are you had help, a lot of it, and a good amount of luck on top of that. Imagine being so self absorbed that you don't give credit where credit is due.

Let’s chat

Do you feel you have less interest posting about politics / current events lately?

Why?

Do you notice the same responses over and over again?

Do you feel headlines and events seem to go nowhere or seem to repeat?

Do you think people are more polarized or less polarized?

Are people beholden to their sides’ ideology— the kind of people where if you looked at their profile you would know exactly what they think on most issues without nuance?

I just wanna hear where you’re at…

Mcdyer,
@Mcdyer@masto.ai avatar

@flexghost
Yes. I focus on taking action or sending money where I can in targeted ways, but I'm not engaging in discussions that won't move a needle. I need a bandwidth for gratitude.

Idea for a new reality tv show, in which a contestant must take a rotisserie chicken from package to chicken salad to chicken salad sandwich on toast. The room starts with one orange cat in it, and a new orange cat is added every 5 minutes until the sandwich is made or the contestant goes mad from futility.

Decades ago, because of some poor planning on my part resulting in a meltdown, I had to explain to my child that I was the Easter bunny. He stopped crying abruptly and said, "You go to all the houses!?!" before the reality of my confession hit him, and everything else it entailed. In many ways, worst Easter ever. But for one fraction of a second, on this day of yearning and miracles, I WAS the Easter Bunny.
I will never get over that moment.

Why is anti-vax content so popular. Looking at places like Fox news, Rogan, others who fed into that content (and made it more legitimate seeming to many people) the only reason I can detect to make such content is that it's popular with a segment of the population.

So, that explains why people make it. To make money.

But why is it "popular" ?

Mcdyer,
@Mcdyer@masto.ai avatar

@futurebird
Because a segment of the population is deeply uncomfortable with the idea that individuals have a level of inherent responsibility as members of a community.

I'm gonna be honest y'all, it's felt dark lately, and for good reason, LGBTQ+ rights in the balance, an election coming up, women struggling to get basic Healthcare, mass shootings, SCOTUS, the environment. The list goes on and on, and the media twists everything to sound even worse, or just straight up ignores actual news. But here's the thing, I know a lot of you, and the fact that you exist in the world gives me hope. You care about the future and you want good things, and so do I, and as long as that spark is there, we have hope. So, let's focus on some good today! Share a good headline, some positive news either on a larger scale or just something personal, a nice picture you took, a funny meme or video, whatever made you feel good or at least, gave you a smile. Let's share some joy!

Since I'm thinking about it, let's talk about Ignorance. I have so many mixed thoughts on the subject. So, a little back story on me, for those who haven't already figured this out. My father was a pastor, I was raised extremely Conservative and religious, and while some of it struck me as a bit off, and I was certainly less Conservative than my parents, I was a good little girl and towed the party line. It wasn't until my little brother came out when he was 14, that my wake up call really began. Suddenly, it was personal, I love my little brother, how would he be going to Hell? If you start doubting one thing, then slowly you start doubting everything.

Because of this background, I do have empathy for what I consider true ignorance. For those who did not grow up in this environment, it can be really hard to understand how people can just blindly believe these things. They don't understand the cult like atmosphere that it truly is. All your media is this one thing, all your social circle are people that agree with you, you are quite literally in a bubble of propaganda. For me the combination of being around different kinds of people and factual education gave me the ability to see the truth, and it's something I still work on, with anything you consider fact, you should always leave a window open, there's always more to learn.

Sooo, if you read this far, What has been your experience with ignorance? What is something you've been ignorant about? Is willful ignorance actually a form of ignorance? Do you think there's any true ways to convince people they are missing out on the truth?

Mcdyer,
@Mcdyer@masto.ai avatar

@RickiTarr
I think the chief driver of willful ignorance is fear of change. The older I get, the more I see change perceived as a thief of order, and many people experience confronting change as an injustice, since they didn't go looking for it. Ignorance is the only dry ground some people feel they have.

The authors are political science professors at Stony Brook.

Their point: The biggest divide isn’t by party.

The biggest divided is by involvement in politics.

The most vocal voices from social media, who are amplified by the mainstream media, come from a relatively small group.

Echoing what Dannagal Young had to say in “Wrong: How Media, Politics, and Identity Drive our Appetite for Misinformation," the authors talk about 2 sets of relatively small groups of hyper-engaged partisans.

I signed up to be a Georgia poll worker for the 2020 election. Nothing lifted my spirits and soothed my brain like learning the process, meeting a bunch of very nice people who care deeply about voting access and security, and participating in living, breathing Of the People-By the People-For the People stuff.
If folks want to walk away from the ledge, they should walk toward their local board of elections.

"I'm upset about abortions"
"Let's fund sex ed, contraceptives and health care for pregnant women, it will cause the number of abortions to decline dramatically."
"NO. Send the women & doctors to jail."

"I'm upset people jump the turnstyle"
"Let's properly fund the subway and make it free and faster while reducing overhead."
"NO. I want those bad teens ARRESTED."

"This dreary area under the bridge is DISGUSTING."
"Let's clean it up & install a public restroom."
"NO. Arrest people for pooping"

Mcdyer,
@Mcdyer@masto.ai avatar

@futurebird
Because arrest and punishment put the action and agency in the hands of the people who want to stop the behavior. The humane options leave the control in the hands of the person doing the unwanted thing.
