There's so much that GenAI can do and so many threat vectors it creators, I'm not sure people fully appreciate how utterly broken it's going to make the internet.

Think about how many web sites you use where all they do is provide a place for human beings to upload things, and show them to you next to an ad.

Every forum, every social media, every search engine, SO, Quora, they're all just places that slurp up human-submitted content.

AI can now generate all that content. They're all cooked.

TheDailyBurble,

@rodhilton Seems the way it's going.

Windows11 has decided FOR me that it's time I get a new printer by not recognising my admittedly not up to date printer. I don't think they should decide that, nor waste my time by me hunting for a driver on the increasingly unreliable web. Assuming Windows 11 even "allows" me to install such a thing.

It runs fine, this old printer off an equally ancient eee. One flash drive to transfer the file and we're done.

TheDailyBurble,
@TheDailyBurble@mastodon.social avatar

@paul Oh I'll buy a brother when the time comes, if it's still reliable. The olde one is fine though and I don't mind if it can't call home anymore.

TheDailyBurble,
@TheDailyBurble@mastodon.social avatar

@paul I managed to print using my eee (good grief), and until I've dealt with the things I needed to print and copy documents for, that's how this is going to work. But yes, I tried to manually add my printer, however I think I may have to manually download a driver for it and hope that the driver is compatible with Windows11 before I have a hope of getting that working. Right now, I just don't have the time.

Alas the cliff must hanger a bit longer

Happy Guilted Into Buy Flowers-And-Chocolate Day, And Maybe Stand In An Endless Line For A Horribly Crowded Brunch Day for those that celebrate!

(hint: if you truly want to celebrate your mother, do what we always did for my mom, and do the buffet the week BEFORE or the week AFTER, when the buffet is better and you don't have crowds; I also used to go to the chocolate/flower stores the DAY AFTER and had gotten flowers for 90% off and chocolates for 50-75% off... 😉

TheDailyBurble,
@TheDailyBurble@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr I'm happy with a Happy Mother's Day and a big hug tbh. Some stuff is too big to be shovelled into consumerism and all the things you need to say are for all the days, not just one. Love is way to big for a mug or a bunch of flowers or a meal.

When I joined the via my own Mastodon instance back in 2018 (and with an identi.ca, status.net, pump.io history going far back), I never thought of it as a Twitter, Facebook etc alternative. I saw it as a new planet. A fresh approach to build a real social network. I still look at it that way. I want to explore new possibilities. Try new things. Escape the gravity well of the "old", centralised networks. Find a better orbit. That is why I block threads.net on my instance.

The people who lost grandparents and parents in the pandemic are expected to keep their grief private and to themselves, but like all the big scars this will sit. And before anyone starts, | also worry about all the other horrible things going on.

Am I the only one suddenly finding the obnoxious "Help me write" choice at the top of common right-click Chrome context menus where the incredibly useful "Undo" choice used to be? No more UNDO? HUH?

By the way, Google, I already damned well know how to write, and there's a snowball's chance in Hell of my letting your "AI" write anything for me.

TheDailyBurble,
@TheDailyBurble@mastodon.social avatar

@lauren I still wonder why AI is so fixated on taking over creative work. It can't really, humans connect to things to be creative, and output is what happens. But it's an AI fixation to try and usurp that process.

Trump keeps recycling this “argument” again and again without ever apparently realizing he’s saying that Joe Biden could throw him into a deep dark dungeon and keep him there and Trump would have no escape.

It’s another case of: either Trump’s that dumb or he thinks all his marks are that dumb.
