So the real reason all these shows get canceled after the second or third season is because if the show goes on the crew gets better pay and benefits?

This is why we can't have nice things.

Like, literally the money-people won't let us have nice things because they might have to let someone else get a fraction of the money they think is theirs.

Yeah, so many people seem convinced that measles and all the others we vaccinate for are just harmless childhood diseases, not serious illnesses that used to kill or disable people frequently (hence why we developed vaccines).

Even chickenpox is no joke.

This happened to a friend of mine. After taking the job and going through training, she was finally informed she was actually expected to move to Miami, FL. That's right! Instead of remote as promised, they wanted her to relocate to a city that will soon be underwater in a state that is actively hostile and dangerous to everyone but straight white men.

Fascinating that the shooter admitted after "I don't know what went wrong with me."

Based on the description of the altercation and the Kyle Rittenhouse shirt this is a dude who has been told these protestors are a violent enemy, and he thought it was going to be so easy to walk up and become "a patriot" too by killing people. And when he didn't manage to find an excuse, he shot anyway because he was bewildered and angry.

Right wing rhetoric literally turns people into shooters.

The thing I hate most about "free trials" is that for some reason they always need to get your payment info when you sign up for the "free" part of it.

Like, it's not "try our service and see if you like it." It's "try our free service and forget to cancel it right away so we get money from you you didn't want to spend."

I know I'm stating the obvious and that this is just how this works, but it really bugs the hell out of me because it is so predatory.

It also feels like an tax.

It's believed now that the earliest societies didn't barter as economists will claim (barter being a very inefficient system). It was more cooperative: "I'll give you something I have now that you need, and later you'll give me something you have and I need."

Gods bless all of you who do proper alt text on complicated images like comics.

I love to boost stuff that amuses me, but often the image description will be something like "comic about pizza", and like...that doesn't help much. That just tells people using screen readers that there IS a joke but you're not going to tell them what it is.

Folks...if you think Davies' Doctor Who just got "woke", your brain has probably been scrambled.

Taylor Swift's fame and success largely come from being liked and supported by women.

I'm not her biggest fan or anything, but it's not surprising that fragile men feel so threatened by her.

They don't even have any imagined power over her. Taylor isn't a sex symbol. They really can't even try to make the claim that she's famous because men think she's hot.

She's famous because a bunch of women like her. That's gotta be upsetting.

Your options when it comes to tipped professions (in countries/situations where workers are not making a living wage) are tip well because workers should be paid for their labor or don't patronize businesses that don't pay their workers properly.

Patronizing the business but not tipping the employee "on principle" because businesses should pay their workers is just taking advantage of an underpaid worker.

I still haven't gotten over the fact that Rowling created a wizarding world that was plagued by institutionalized racism (and patriarchy!)—a fact she frequently highlighted—but actually never planned to upend that hierarchy.

Even as a kid when the books were coming out, I truly believed and expected it was going somewhere. It seemed to me that Rowling was laying the groundwork for the Ministry of Magic to become the true villain.

My advice to people new to Fedi?

Don't sleep on your local and federated feeds, especially if you chose a server related to an interest of yours.

Your local feed can be a goldmine of people posting about the stuff you enjoy. Your federated feed can also be a good way of finding other people to follow or just enjoying a broader slice of fedi than only the people you have followed yourself.

This "plagiarism" accusation is hitting a nerve as a person who was raised & "educated" (indoctrinated) in a deliberately racist "Christian" community, because they use the claim of "plagiarism" to discredit MLK.

It was a permanent asterisk attached to his name in my young mind, this "you're not allowed to listen to this person & if anyone tries to talk about him, we will bog this conversation down in the plagiarism mire and litigate every detail even though it's NOT RELEVANT."

Just saw a post about someone who thought it was inappropriate to teach grade school girls how to use a tampon (many girls get their first period during that time), and it just makes me so mad, because I literally did not understand my vulva or vagina growing up, did not even have a word for either of them. Frankly I didn't know my vagina existed until I got my first period at 11.

A crazy thing about being poorer than other people in your social group is that YOU'RE the rude one if you mention not having enough money to participate in something.

You'll be invited to a restaurant you can't afford, order water and a side salad as your entire meal, but you aren't allowed to say "y'all, I don't have this kind of money."

It's awkward and rude to bring up that you have less money than someone else, apparently. It might make them feel uncomfortable momentarily.

Yeah, I'm really dwelling on this analogy I came up with today that your relationships with people are like gardens the two of you tend together.

It's such a helpful perspective for me both on the relationships that are thriving and the ones that are not. And on the ones that basically don't exist.

It's kind of funny trying to get people who aren't into getting connected with online communities (which is fine) to understand what using social media means to me.

I appreciate everyone who interacts with my posts and everyone who posts the interesting things I interact with. This is, for me, very social and very enjoyable. I'm not exactly close besties with most of my mutuals, but I love the fact that I am getting to know several folks on here.

Totally valid to not "do" social media, but I also sometimes think people don't know what they're missing.

Connecting with "strangers online" makes the world feel less hostile and isolating, less disjointed and disconnected, less corporate (honestly even on corporate social media if you're able to use it to find and connect to people), more interesting, more varied, more exciting and hopeful.
