1/34 This started out as a much shorter thread about a related topic, but Something Happened and now it's a #LifeHack #instructional thread on keeping your house comfortable and saving #money and the #environment, through the magic of air movement. It's also timely, what with it being the start of the northern-hemisphere summer and southern-hemisphere winter.

@jerry 's recent reminded me of something I've long wondered about.

I don't think I've ever seen a kitchen sink with an overflow drain, and I've overflowed a couple in my life as a result.

Anyone if there's a practical kitchen sinks don't have 'em? Or is it just "always been done that way"?

I'm going to have a bit of a #tech #rant (less charitable people might say #whine) here. If you just want jokes and cute bunny pictures, feel free to skip this one.

Object of my #ire this week? #Furnaces. I'm not even going to rant about their main control boards; most of that's been said better than I could say it, by others with more knowledge than I.

I'm ranting about #furnace #motors.

Ages ago, furnaces had one #motor in them, to spin the #blower that moves air through your house.

Way back when, I wrote a thread on house rabbits, and how they're different because they are prey animals, not predators like cats and dogs. That thread starts here:
https://mindly.social/@cazabon/109882459730036423

One thing I didn't mention is that, like many other prey animals, they are extremely good at hiding health problems. You've heard how the jackals will separate the weak or sick member from the herd; prey animals evolve to disguise being sick or weak.

There are many large and in the world. Many people are victimized by the in a thousand different ways. This is not their story; it is not about their problems, but this should not be seen as minimizing them.

I'd like to talk about something a little closer to home: in the field. I've been in this field for <mumble> years and worked for tiny companies, medium consulting companies, large orgs, and as a one-man independent contractor.

@paul_ipv6 posted about managers, fanciful , and his response involving a Magic 8-Ball. It reminded me of a story I've told about one place I worked. I've never told it here.

I was working at a small-to-medium-sized IT/ company that had a few internal products, but mostly did outsourced R&D work for a behemoth company - one of the largest on the planet at the time.

It was classic planning. HugeCo's R&D department would send us a high-level .

#Debian #major #releases come along so rarely I always forget something since the last time I upgraded.

#Bullseye -> #Bookworm this time, and that was fun 😂

#Lesson learned; perhaps this will save someone else some time.

If you have #Python 3.11 installed on Bullseye from the "#deadsnakes" ppa, uninstall it before attempting the upgrade. It conflicts with the Python 3.11 package in Bookworm in a way that causes the upgrade to #fail partway through. Then you have to manually fix it all...

is weird. action makes it weirder. If you have perverse , you get perverse results.

An example.

Every spring, there are floods somewhere in North America. Maybe the Red River that flows up through North Dakota to Winnipeg and beyond. Maybe the winter snowpack is heavy and melts quickly in the Rockies, flooding out parts of B.C. Maybe torrential rains in Atlantic areas cause overland flooding throughout Quebec.

Let's get this out of the way: they give a number of #reasons why #webservers "might wish" to establish that a web #client is running on a "#trusted" software stack, including things like "make sure other game players aren't cheating" and "ensure I'm talking to another human".

We unexpectedly lost Gracie today; she'd successfully hidden her symptoms until recently, and we'd gotten her to the vet as soon as possible, but with the benefit of hindsight we can see what happened. It explains a lot of things.

The worst part is I hardly have any photos of her and George, her bonded mate, who is now looking for her.

It's been a shitty month. Here are a couple of the few photos I have of her.

Gracie, a lop-eared grey house rabbit with extremely fine, soft fur, seen in the midst of doing some bunstruction in a cardboard box. She is taking a break to peer suspiciously at the photographer.

One thing that has become apparent over the last 20 or 30 years is a true change in education - particularly "higher" post-secondary education. While many have pointed out various flaws and problems, they mostly seem to point to differing ideologies ("indoctrination").

That problem is significant. Instilling a particular set of beliefs rather than helping to build the mental skills to investigate and understand the world, and then synthesize a cohesive set of beliefs, leads to failure.

The continues.

Got a replacement blower from northamericahvac.com - had to order from the States. Installed it, and ... furnace was still throwing an code meaning "incorrect from ECM motor" once, then "no signal from ECM motor" forever after.

After double-checking, I saw the part number on the box didn't match what I'd ordered - but that turned out to be a red herring. The box number was for the unprogrammed motor.

I've got a busted consumer product here that has 2 #Holtek #microcontrollers in it. Either one would be sufficient to run this product (a brushless-motor tower fan), but #MCUs are cheap, so why not throw a second one in if it saves a few centimeters of wire?
