What I'd like to see is a TV show like Grand Designs, but posh people who decide to build their own web app.

Kevin McCloud appears halfway through the show in his hard hat, shaking his head sadly.

"Unfortunately their decision to use Kubernetes has led to a very problematic deployment. Meanwhile, their offshore React contractor has left for another job, leaving Jocasta and Tarquin trying to write the JSX themselves..."

I think the admin is very dated and not modern enough for current users.

For example, when you click "Save" there should be a popup asking if the user wants to subscribe to my newsletter.

Clicking the "Delete" button should play a video of my latest chicken recipe/protein powder promotion in the bottom left corner.

Is it too late to get these changes into 5.0? I can make a PR.

The extreme financial problems in #Birmingham are less about the settlement of an #equalpay case & more about the disastrous implementation of an #Oracle IT system.

While this has been discussed publicly in the past, its worth emphasising its critical & central role in Birmingham's problems.... like the #Horizon IT problems at the Post Office, a large multinational #informationtechnology firm seems to be causing havoc with impunity!

@ChrisMayLA6 the words "Oracle" and "IT disaster" are seldom found far apart.

However what is interesting is the procurement process: why government keeps going back to these big IT companies, who keep screwing up with little consequence.

We like to think it involves some combination of golf memberships, trips to Las Vegas and compromising pictures with strippers, but often it's just plain incompetence and short term thinking.

Building a new implementation from scratch in 2023 is like trying to learn how to build web sites when all the materials available consist of the W3C specs and the source code of WordPress.

I've got tabs open for different implementations in e.g. Rust or PHP, neither of which I know very well, trying to figure out the correct configuration of a user outbox.

Biggest work frustration in general is seeing how much people like making projects difficult.

It's not that the projects themselves have challenges, technical or otherwise.

It's that beyond those challenges, people want to add more technical complexity, unnecessary requirements, bikeshedding, dependency issues, unreasonable deadlines etc and then get really surprised and angry at the buggy, overdue mess at the end.

I had some ideas for fediverse apps but honestly the protocol is so challenging to implement I realized I would be spending 80% of the time dealing with ActivityPub integration and 20% actually working on the app itself.

"Just make it federated" is never going to be a thing with these specs, even reusable libraries and test suites are too difficult to implement.

On Discord chat the other day, young devs looking for tips on learning React.

I tried to let them know about its pitfalls, and they didn't disagree, but at the end of the day it's what employers want, regardless of whether it's good or not.

So not blaming junior devs in the slightest for using React. They have to put food on the table too.

Thinking about how is just dropping courses for less "commercial" languages for example despite their popularity and that these courses are largely built for free by volunteer enthusiasts.

Perhaps there is an opening here for an platform for building and consuming language courses that can be hosted cheaply and can exist as long as people want them. Doesn't necessarily need to be a straight Duolingo clone.

As wins (by a large margin) the Republican caucus in , the prospect of a second Trump term edges closer....

What seemed unthinkable not so many months ago, now starts to look possible.

Whatever, might think (rightly or wrongly) about 's record in Govt., the notion that Trump might be an 'improvement' to someone on the other side of the Atlantic looks delusional...

I'm just perplexed about how he gains any support at all, but clearly he's appealing to something?

@ChrisMayLA6 even the Italians, for all their reputation of corruption, convicted Berlusconi.

The US however is too far gone, and has probably entered its final death spiral as a unified democracy.

Of course the media will want to paint all this as politics as usual, either because they are inept, or because their owners want to create a picture of normalcy because that's good for business.

Thinking of upcoming UK elections: my sister was asked by local MP if she wanted to stand for councilor in her local area, she said no because politics is such a hostile environment for women (especially in social media), particularly those with families. No doubt this applies to minorities tenfold.

If we wonder about the quality and lack of diversity in our politicians, maybe the nastiness of modern politics is a factor. Ask Angela Rayner.

I never understood the rule about Clerics in DnD only being allowed to use blunt weapons. Perhaps this might have been a thing with priests in Medieval Europe but clerics can belong to any number of imaginary religions. What if you are high priest of some Holy Pointy Objects cult, where clubs and maces are considered ungodly?

You get the impression from today's Tories (Sunak, Truss et al) that they don't really like Britain or its people very much. They regard the British people as lazy, "woke", workshy and ungrateful.

Hence all their talk about doing away with doctors' sick notes, discouraging work-from-home, "Singapore on the Thames" etc. They would much rather be governing an imaginary authoritarian country somewhere in Asia with zero workers rights.

I've found the happy space for using Docker in local development is to use it for external services such as databases, Redis etc (as I have to use different versions of e.g. MySQL or PostgreSQL), but use language-specific tools such as pyenv or nvm instead of running your project in a container.
