Heard the story of the girl throwing starfish into the ocean? A man watching her says "don't you know there are miles of beach and you can't make a difference?"

The girl bends down and scoops up another starfish and gently throws it into the ocean, turns to the man and says "it made a difference to that one".

I often think of this story when world events make me feel powerless. I can't help everyone, but I can help someone.

So... if anyone needs me to throw them into the sea, I'm here.

pet peeve: programs that try to be clever when displaying dates.

eg. "last modified 13 seconds ago"

It's already incorrect as soon as you read it and becomes more so the longer it sits in your terminal / web browser etc.

I'm currently looking at a tab on Codeberg that says it was updated "9 months ago". Which precise date and time? It matters. Just show me the timestamp! I'm trying to compare a ticket to a git commit see which happened first.

Status: no idea.

All Your Base Are Belong to LLM

"The output from an LLM is a derivative work of the data used to train the LLM.

If we fail to recognise this, or are unable to uphold this in law, copyright (and copyleft on which it depends) is dead. Copyright will still be used against us by corporations, but its utility to FOSS to preserve freedom is gone."

"Living in fear" has become something of a dogwhistle, used to attack the Covid-cautious and make it somehow their fault for prolonging the Pandemic.

Ironically, the ones saying "Take off your mask - let's see your smile" and asking "How long are you going to live in fear?" seem to be the ones who fear being reminded of a Pandemic they'd rather forget.

Any time I hear politicians or journalists use the word "terrorist" I read it as a clear sign of bias and trying to imply that one side is evil and therefore any action is justified.

There are no terrorists, just people, some of whom are (war) criminals.

Replace terrorist with your favorite "evil" race from fantasy. eg. orc.

We can happily listen to Gimli chatting about enjoying hewing orc skulls, because they're not human. "Terrorist" is designed to make us feel that way about other people.

As I neither work for an academic institution nor a large corporate, getting access to standards documentation and research papers is a major pain. So much knowledge is paywalled, and I often don't know before hunting down and reading it whether it will be of any use to me.

Imagine you are sitting in your favorite café. The food is good, the coffee is better, and you know all the regulars. Sure, you're in public, but it's a public you've chosen.

As you drink your coffee, you hear a rumble and a crash. One of the walls has been knocked thru from the McDonalds next door. The sights, sounds and smells come in, as do the people. A guy wearing a MAGA t-shirt and a mouth full of burger comes over to sit at your table.

Consent matters, even in public.

A trend I'm seeing with conferences is that "masks are recommended, but not required".

Of course, you'd expect that the organisers making that recommendation would set an example by doing the thing they are so "strongly recommending". Unfortunately, this rarely seems to be the case.

Do parents "strongly recommend" their children wear seatbelts while sitting in the same car without wearing theirs?

Such people make neither good parents nor event organisers.

I phoned Mum. She admitted her and my uncle had both stopped wearing masks, gone out to a shopping centre, and caught

She'd avoided telling me, because I'd told them both so many times to keep masking. They are wearing masks again now.

They're both "fine", but how many years did that mistake cost? Have we lost 5 years with my mother? 10?

When you choose not to wear a mask in public, you tell other people like my mother it's safe to do the same.

Dreamt that I accidentally did a git checkout while driving, and I could see all the files appearing in the rear-view mirror scattered on the road behind me. Had to pull over and try to remember the incantation to clean up the mess.

There are state and corporate actors that benefit immensely from the existence of DDoS attacks.

Obviously, companies like Cloudflare benefit, because they have a product to sell.

By using their DDoS protection service you make all of your traffic subject to US goverment intercept, so US govt agencies like it too.

I would not be astonished to find that some DDoS attacks are performed, funded or otherwise encouraged directly or indirectly by either of these groups.

"Two days ago" here refers to a date in 2021, which is when archive.org archived the site.

Seriously, just display the actual date. Trying to be clever and showing a delta just means it will always be wrong. It gets more wrong the longer the browser tab remains open (unless you waste CPU keeping it updated).

Today we begin the assault on Monday's previously unclimbed north face. As the sherpas make our final preparations to leave basecamp, I stare across my coffee mug at the distant summit, wrapped in clouds and think back to what brought me here in the first place.

It was a Boeing 737. I'm bloody lucky to be alive.

Chatted with a friend earlier on Jitsi. Exhausting, but great to catch up after so long.

They caught in early 2022. Covid is "over" where they live and no one masks anymore.

I asked if they'd had any health issues post-Covid. A pause... then came the list, including muscle spasms, depression, PTSD, cognitive impairment, worse asthma (needs inhaler now), on blood pressure meds, tired (can only work 20 hrs/wk now) and pre-diabetic.

Their doctor says they do NOT have ... 🤦‍♂️

When I hear that an instance has 60 thousand users or some such number, I remember that I grew up in a town of 25 thousand people.

A town that size had a couple of highschools, restaurants, cafes, a few pubs, a courthouse, police station, hospital and train station.

The mayor had one of those gold chains of office and everything. He cut ribbons to open buildings, kissed babies to get elected and got his picture taken posing next to random objects the way such folk do.

Just pondering, really.

If you are at and haven't yet signed the @phpledge , why not take a moment and do that now?

Show your support for your community and the folks who helped organise this great event, and others like it: @northbaypython @SeaGL

by showing that you expect all conferences to take steps to protect you. It took a while for Codes of Conduct to become the norm. Health Policies are on the way - help us get there sooner!

Modern Stoneage Debugging

Debuggers are great and they have their place, but never underestimate the power of simply printing "Barney was here" when tracing code.

Barney often needs some help from Wilma and Betty and his mate Fred, but if you have to bring out Dino and Bam Bam it's probably gone wrong. Maybe you should put the Flintstones away and break out that debugger now. 😉

Important: don't forget to remove them before deploying into production.

@C19LAP Promoting Facebook as a safe environment to discuss personal health is deeply irresponsible.

FB's real name policy, combined with their long history of abusing and selling personal data (including to health insurers) puts people at risk.

FB may be an easy place to set up a group, but it is the wrong place.

Web technologies that meet the varied needs of society do not happen by chance. They are designed and standardized, not by one company, country, or community, but through the work of the Web Consortium.

Discover the value for organizations to join as Members.
https://www.w3.org/membership/

dentangle,
@dentangle@chaos.social avatar

@Jeremiah @w3c The W3C is only interested in large corporations as members. This is clear from their fees, which deliberately exclude small businesses from participating.

My company has been a member of Nominet and RIPE for years (memberships that come with real benefits in terms of Internet resources), but there's no way in hell we could justify a membership of W3C. Why would we want to subsidise Google?

dentangle,
@dentangle@chaos.social avatar

@Jeremiah @w3c

Let's compare:
Nominet: £500 join, £100/yr
RIPE: 1000€ join, ~1400€/yr
W3C: 7800€/yr

Nominet essentially costs us nothing, as we get a discount on .uk domains.

RIPE gives us an ASN number and IP addresses we can route.

Both these orgs give us voting rights and a chance to shape Internet policy.

W3C membership benefits (from the website):

  • Participate in any group
  • Shape web technology
  • Propose new technology
