:windows: Windows DLLs for most PECL extensions are back!

🏗️ @shivammathur has been working on GitHub Actions to automate the builds of these extensions.

➡️ The next step is automating these builds so that extension authors can include steps in their release actions as well!

🆕 blog! “Book Review: Understanding Privacy - Heather Burns”
★★★★★

Heather Burns has an absolutely deft way of turning the sometimes-dull world of digital privacy into entertaining, informative, and actionable prose. Too many of these sorts of books end up being a list of woes and end with "someone should do something, I guess?". Understanding Privacy is different. A…

Just for fun. I added together all of the images I took of Comet Pons Brooks a few weeks ago. The session was just after astronomical twilight and every single frame I took (68) had at least one satellite trail. To really piss me off, a whole train of freshly launched Starlink satellites joined the "party". This, friends, is the price we pay for "progress". #notostarlink #savethesky

In the late ‘90s and early 2000s, people—regular people—were often afraid of ecommerce and open source software.

We did a ton of work to build trust in both of these things, to the point where they became the obvious defaults when people had a choice.

It really hurts me deep within to see “us” cashing out the trust we’ve built in the web for the short term profits of bad and unreliable search, cheap engagement tricks, and completely ignorant “hallucinations”.

Ignoring expert consensus, feeling no shame following exposés showing tech lobbyists shaping these EU surveillance proposals, EU politicians are at it again

So, we'll reiterate: Signal would rather leave the EU market than subject our users to mass gov surveillance. FULL STOP

Any “constitutional” or legal questions about the general election?

Ask below and I will reply if I can.

(I used to do this sort of thing on Twitter and I thought I would give it a go here.)

Fire up the shredders for the #DPDIBill ☠️

It’s so long, see you never 🤞 for this flawed legislation that would’ve removed controls over our data and handed power to UK government bodies and companies.

ORG and civil society organisations fought the Bill to ensure it wasn’t just nodded into law 🔥

Rishi Sunak talking about collective sacrifice like he's ever sacrificed anything for the benefit of others.

His party has stolen, cheated, and lied to the people while they sold off public services, blamed others for their failures, privatised profits and made the public pay for the losses.

Get the fuck out of here.

Microsoft recall is fucking insane.

Recall snapshots are kept on Copilot+ PCs themselves, on the local hard disk, and are protected using data encryption on your device and (if you have Windows 11 Pro or an enterprise Windows 11 SKU) BitLocker.

Your doing what? Microsoft wh-

Recall uses Copilot+ PC advanced processing capabilities to take images of your active screen every few seconds. [...]

WHAT WHY NO ST-

Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers. That data may be in snapshots that are stored on your device, especially when sites do not follow standard internet protocols like cloaking password entry.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

It treats material protected with digital rights management (DRM) similarly; like other Windows apps such as the Snipping Tool, Recall will not store DRM content.

Ah, but of course. The DRM is protected...

Good morning, and welcome to Enshittification Tuesday. We've got quite a selection for your perusal today, and shockingly it isn't all related to AI.

We've got:

  • Microsoft adds AI spyware at the OS level

  • iTerm2 adds AI spyware at the Terminal level

  • FireTV interface has been sneakily tweaked to automatically subscribe users to new services when downloading certain apps (yes, there's a confirmation screen, but blink and you'll miss it & might get double-subscribed)
