I watched the re-release that was in theatres over the weekend in anticipation of Dune Part 2 coming out soon. It really is a spectacular adaption!

I have loved the book for many years, and now I'm loving the movies. But I'm wondering how the movie comes across to anybody who hasn't read the book. It necessarily leaves a lot out, and I'm wondering if my brain is subconsciously filling in the gaps. Thoughts?

Can someone who understands activity pub fill me in on the whole Threads posting to Mastodon thing? Mosseri (IG CEO) said that soon Threads users would be able to post to Mastodon. Will I be able to cross post my Threads posts to this Mastodon profile? Or do I have to set up a second Mostodon profile for my Threads cross posts? I'm confused how this whole thing will work

electrafish,

@taylorlorenz I'm not particularly in the know, but I would assume it means people on Mastodon will soon be able to follow people on Threads. So if you post on Threads, both Threads and Mastodon followers will see your post.

electrafish, to gaming

I shifted my desktop #gaming computer to #Linux today, installing #Pop_OS on a second SSD. So far, it is doing everything I want it to. I play mostly #StarWars Battlefront 2 (2017), and I got that running pretty well (AMD graphics card seems key). The #SteamDeck has really made linux gaming viable! Everything else I do is standard (web sites, document management, backup, etc). Let's hope this sticks permanently! #FOSS

Sitting on a train that has been delayed leaving with no clue when we’ll actually depart. Grrrrrrrr

electrafish,

@dancinyogi If it's in the US, especially for long distance trains the arrival/departure times are always a guessing game. Even the realtime website that estimates arrival is often inaccurate. They always claim the train will make up lost time, but it rarely does.

What is a word that you had read, but after hearing it spoken aloud, you realized you were pronouncing completely wrong in your head?

Mine is pretty Embarrassing, and is just one of many!

MISLED! I'm not even sure how to type this out for it to make sense, but it was something like:

Myz-ulled

electrafish,

Biped

As a boy I pronounced it "bipe-d". It was an attribute in an RPG that I thought meant how muscular the animal-human mutant character was, rather than how well it walked on two legs!

Just finished marking astro 101 quizzes (while watching cooking videos, because it's Saturday night, so partayyyy).

Average of 60% with a near-perfect bell curve distribution with sigma ~20%, which is about what I usually get for this class. At least I know there wasn't rampant cheating. (Or if there was, it didn't help...)

that in Legacy (a movie I just love), Kevin Flynn had been trapped for something like 1000 years or "cycles" from his point of view in the grid. WHAT?! That totally blew past me all the many times I've watched this movie!

When I was a kid in the 80s and 90s, I watched Star Trek: The Next Generation. I soaked up the vibes of a high-tech, utopian future. I internalized the trajectory we were on was good, that we had reached the End of History. There might be a few bumps on the road, but the direction was inevitable and the destination was inexorable.

It turns out that the fastest a human being has ever traveled was 39,897 kilometers per hour. That was the crew of the Apollo 10 mission returning to earth. That happened on 26 May, 1969.

Fifty-four years ago. We peaked more than half a century ago.

    1/of several

@HeavenlyPossum Gene Roddenberry's view of human nature and the trajectory of society was deeply flawed.

Bullied By Her Own Party, a Election Official's Roots Mean Nothing in Volatile New Climate

In the face of repeated calls to back Donald Trump's bogus claims that the 2020 was stolen, Marge Bostelmann of the Wisconsin Commission remains resolute: “I’m a who stands up for the truth and not for a lie.”
