We need a new word to describe the constant fear of leaving entire tech platforms and starting again every six months because they decided posting Swastikas doesn't violate their TOS
@Daojoan The fear or anxiety invoke fragility and precarious feelings, insecurity and peril. The thing we fear is being forced to leave home, leave friends, abandon the meaningful debris of living, the wealth of memory and history rooted in this place, in these affordances.
Of having to grieve and live with loss. To muster the energy and courage to rebuild with illusions of safety -- that let us trust strangers and make them friends -- torn from us. It's the life of virtual homelessness.
@Daojoan Of taking temporary shelter without hope for settling. Of renting forever instead of owning. Of feeling deeply that you are subject to corporate vagaries and chaotic human forces beyond your influence, let alone your control. Powerless. Unrooted. Living in online precarity. Living with hypervigilance of landlords evicting and mobs attacking and lies displacing reality.
I’m old enough to remember when smoking (and smoke) was everywhere, and the idea that smokers might ever be asked or made to stop was seen as absurd. Many kids (including me) got horrible bronchitis every single year and had other sorts of breathing problems all the time. Many parents (and other adults) died early.
@Pagan_Animist@emilyk@histoftech Are we at the start of similar curves for vaping and pot smoking and the respiratory sicknesses associated with their use?
#UX great Jakob Nielsen is warning the field to immerse themselves in #ai in general and #genai in particular. He says their impact is as fundamental as the move from desktop UI to web UX. And recalls that very few #design pros led the switch, producing a decade of flawed and broken interaction. So now is the time for all good designers to jump in and lead the next interaction revolution. https://www.uxtigers.com/post/ai-new-ui-paradigm
"How to Migrate from Evernote to OneNote: Step-by-Step Guide." Clear wikihow guide, pretty effective method, fast-ish, for Windows. In light of #Evernote killing off the free tier.
Sports Illustrated has been making up fake AI authors, claiming they are real, then deleting them when asked and offering no formal comment, editorial note, or other response.
@negative12dollarbill@taylorlorenz I think Reuters or AP tried that on routine high school, college, and farm team stories, putting score sheets into text. Not sure if it worked or lasted.
I feel like we truly need to have a serious discussion about Taylor Swift coming in to sub out Joe Biden.
The constitutional age requirement will be met by inauguration. There is literally no legal block to this plan. It will work. And finally put a Millennial in control.
Taylor Swift is a transcendent global figure of statistically unequalled power. Remember there were only like 5 million people on Earth when Beatlemania hit. They had no other options. Taylor Swift is a lighthouse in the storm of time.
@SwiftOnSecurity Where does Tay reside? Write in campaign for governor or senate in a red state? Could easily see her appointed as advocate for disenfranchised interests… Kids. Women. Othered folks. Labor. The heartbroken. Consumers. The hopeful. Pedestrians. The Precarity. Lovers.
Mac revenue down, why? IMO because the M1 “”/Pro are too damn good.
Will the M3 fix things? I doubt it, the M3 Max is a ton better than the M1/M2 Pro/Max, but the machines most people can actually afford to buy aren't “got to buy it" faster.
@paul Is Apple building up processor power in anticipation of running ai stacks and LLMs locally? As something routine enough to become part of the OS?
We need an Israel-Hamas ceasefire immediately, and I'm extremely disappointed that my opponent for US Congress in IL-11 refuses to support a ceasefire.
Here are the facts. So far, at least...
•1,403 Israeli civilians have been killed, another 3,800 injured
•3,547 Palestinian civilians have been killed, another 13,365 injured
•More than 1,000,000 Palestinians have been displaced, including nearly 500,000 children
@QasimRashid Frame your arguments as tradeoffs, please. What are the alternatives to a ceasefire? Who would sign off and enforce a ceasefire on the Hamas side? What risks come with Israel pausing then restarting militarily if/when violence resumes? Would the steep costs of a high intensity war be less than the costs of Hamas and supporters regrouping? What non-military actions can start now to prevent Hamas from rebooting? We need you to keep evolving from a politician into a statesman.
The blessing and the curse of having grown up in Singapore / Malaysia / Thailand / Indonesia is I don’t find any food spicy, ever. But I really like extremely spicy food. Nothing is spicy anymore, nor even spicy food from those places.
Basically super spicy just registers as a flavor for me, like how you might note that something is ‘sweet’, but I don’t really have a reaction to it
Shakespeare was desperate, in the pocket of theater owners and would have crossed the #WGAStrike picket lines. Chris Marlow would have stayed #WGAStrong
@danhon best minds only work on other things once they feel safely past hand-to-mouth. ending the sense and reality of precarity unleashes vast talent.
@daringfireball says #Apple should stop #advertising on #twitter, building on @ianbetteridge's observation that X's support for hate groups is an advertiser's disqualifier. This would hurt twitter's cashflow fast. A bigger statement: let the Apple store drop the twitter/X apps. Most traffic is mobile and Apple users are premium ad targets. Deny advertiser (and hate group) access to Apple users and see a new kind of power for good emerge. https://daringfireball.net/linked/2023/09/05/betteridge-apple-twitter
When you've worn a bunch of hats and had a career that spans lots of different interests, describing what you do can be tough. Here's how I'm thinking about it. https://werd.io/2023/in-defense-of-being-unfocused
@ben I’m constantly trying to boil down a long work history and a diverse set of experiences/abilities into bumper stickers and bullets. I keep running into the basic human need for something familiar, like a recognizable job title. And for measurable results when so much work is via influence or indirect. A #generalist with #reach and #breadth isn’t a natural fit for staffing pipelines but maybe for search results?
Arrests and convictions are relatively high (creating demand for places to hold arrested people waiting for trial oor serving sub-year sentences). You can change the drivers for incarceration (looser laws, less enforcement, shorter terms, more safety net) to cut demand for jail.
