@GottaLaff I live in the Southwest about 350 miles north of the border. I often travel south on family business and can report that there isn't a migrant-driven crime wave. In fact, in the largely rural state where I live, a large number of migrants seem to gravitate toward home health care roles. I don't know what my elderly dad would have done without his home health care aide. She is a migrant and a kind, caring person who really took care of him, don't know what we'd have done without her.

Increased Measles in Canada - Are you protected?

As Public Health crumbles and too few people are getting vaccinated for measles our herd immunity levels have dropped too much and now many people are at risk for a disease we almost eradicated in Canada. ๐Ÿงต 1/

@jeffgilchrist I was a kid before the vaccines for measles and rubella were available, so I've actually had measles and can vouch for everything in this thread. I've never been as sick as I was when I was six and had measles. The fever, the headaches, the upset stomach, I was very ill for about a month. It took me years to fully recover and I still came out the other end with balance problems (inner ear damage) and arrhythmia. Not getting your child vaccinated should be considered child abuse.

isotope239,
@isotope239@mastodon.online avatar

@FiddleSix @jeffgilchrist It looks like the answer to your question is 'maybe': https://www.healthline.com/health-news/some-adults-need-to-be-revaccinated-against-measles-021115#Who-needs-revaccination?

I had my doctor refer me for the test during my most recent annual exam and it showed that I'm still immune. I must have had a real knock-down drag-out case of it because I've still got immunity after all these years.

Does anyone else have trouble doing one thing at a time? Like if I'm doing chores it helps to have a podcast or talk to someone, or watching TV, I need to do something with my hands, like a little handy craft, or a simple game. I love movies, but the movie has to be absolutely fascinating for me to want to go to a theater where I just need to sit there and watch. I have a large amount of tabs open on my phone all the time and I flit back and forth through a bunch of different things. Weed helps calm this down a bit.

isotope239,
@isotope239@mastodon.online avatar

@RickiTarr It's a mixed bag for me. If I'm doing something physical, like mopping the floor or folding clothes, I don't care for music or tellie, I prefer silence. There's something cathartic about just concentrating on the task at hand for me. If I'm watching a program, I play solitaire on my tablet or knit. I do keep a lot of tabs open on my desktop (yes, some of us still prefer some screen space), but not on my phone.

The New York Times is now visibly working -- from the "news" side of the operation -- to undermine Biden's re-election.

More than most of Big Journalism, it has been thumping the right-wing-generated "he's too old" drum even before the 2020 election. The poll published today, from my perspective, is designed to further a narrative that the so-called Paper of Record has done so much to create.

I thought a new top editor might be an improvement. Kahn has been, in fact, a disaster.

isotope239,

@dangillmor I dumped my NYT subscription a year ago and their misinformation campaign supporting the right wing has just gotten worse since then.

Something I've noticed a lot lately, is that especially Boomer women, but honestly, women in general, don't seem to ask for what they want or need in a direct way. I notice this a lot with my Mom and her friends. Instead of just asking for what they need directly they tell a story, to ask in a roundabout way. For instance, my Mom needed help this morning, and Instead of just saying, "Hey, I dropped my remote, can you pick it up for me?" She tells a one minute story about what happened, no ask, and eventually I get the point, and then suggest that I come pick it up. Or if one of her friends wants to do something like have a birthday party for a friend, they don't say "We should have a party!" They say, It's Sarah's Birthday coming up, you know she likes surprises, what does everyone think we should do?"

I often wonder if this is why older people think younger women are rude and demanding, because younger people often just ask for what they want and need in a more direct way. But also it's probably just straight up sexism, because men are supposed to make decisions, and women are supposed to make suggestions.

What do you all think? Is this just me? Have you experienced something similar?

isotope239,
@isotope239@mastodon.online avatar

@CuriousMagpie @RickiTarr I'm a boomer but for me, it depends on the question being asked. I'll use the indirect method if I'm sounding out the other person to perhaps discover their enthusiasm for a proposal of some sort. Then, I go direct for questions like 'do you prefer this color or that one'. Sometimes people acquiesce to an answer when they actually aren't that keen on the idea.

isotope239,
@isotope239@mastodon.online avatar

@RickiTarr @CuriousMagpie I think that's true, but indirect also works for stuff that's a bit tricky. For instance, I'm very fond of opera; not just the music but as performed on stage. I gave up on the better half coming along as loud snoring commences even before the first act is over! So, if I approach someone to come along with me, I'll sound them out first indirectly. 1/2

isotope239,
@isotope239@mastodon.online avatar

@RickiTarr @CuriousMagpie The tricky bit comes in with the perception of opera being considered high-brow, so declining might make you appear somehow less cultured (it doesn't, opera isn't everyone's cup of tea). 2/2

isotope239,
@isotope239@mastodon.online avatar

@RickiTarr @CuriousMagpie P.S. You don't have to be a culture vulture to enjoy opera. A few years ago the Santa Fe Opera had a very sexy young baritone as Don Giovanni and all the women were swooning. When the Commendatore showed up to throw the handsome devil into the pit of hell, we were all bereft! Even better, as the Commendatore thrust his arm forward to open the pit, there was a loud crack of lightning (the real thing, not special effects), just perfect!

RickiTarr, to random
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

Okay, let me try to ask this question, in a coherent way!

When we hear certain kinds of music, arrangements and tones, we associate them with feelings and emotions, like this sounds magical or whimsical, this sounds bouncy and happy, or dark and tragic. Do you think that is this is innate, like the combination of certain notes and tones just illicit these feelings in most people or is it because we've seen it related to these kinds of emotions on the radio or in movies and TV?

Iโ€™m not sure that weakening Biden any way you can is the smart way to go if you fear that he canโ€™t beat Trump.

I blame the media for obsessing over his age and rarely mentioning that by all accounts heโ€™s sharp and well prepared, and also the West Wing for convincing people thereโ€™s a chance someone else will swoop in.

@tiamat271 @GottaLaff @JoshuaHolland I just ran into one of the 'not gonna vote for Biden because Gaza' people in another thread and just threw up my hands. For one thing, it would be impossible to know what Biden knows, we aren't privy to the kinds of briefings he gets. For another, it's just as you say: if he loses, we have all lost any ability to fight for the individual issues we face. If the republicans win, everything else is lost.

They know they can't win 'fair and square'. As Hartmann details, even so, there is a way they can still take over the election and, as things stand, it's legal ( but completely unethical).

Amid Floridaโ€™s Measles Outbreak, Florida Surgeon General acts unethically and unprofessionally [I changed the headline] https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/23/well/family/florida-measles-outbreak-joseph-ladapo.html

You don't need to be a scientist or public health expert to know that this is absolutely bonkers.

Children with measles, an incredibly infectious disease, should not be going to school or wandering around making those who cannot vaccinate sick. They can permanently disable someone.

isotope239,
@isotope239@mastodon.online avatar

@CarolineMalaCorbin I had measles and rubella before the vaccines were available and they are far from trivial. They can make you very very sick and I have a variety of after-effects that have affected me all my life, such as a slight problem with my balance (inner ear) and arrhythmia. Others who caught measles at that same time are worse off and a few I knew of died. If you want to permanently damage your child, by all means, allow them to catch these entirely preventable diseases.
