Hello Fediverse. I'm posting this tonight from my federated Flipboard profile! We're now testing our #ActivityPub integration starting with my account. You can follow me here to see all the stories I'm curating about things like startups, photography and of course, the #Fediverse. Curious to hear your thoughts on how this is working. We’ll incorporate your feedback as we make more progress on federating Flipboard. Stay tuned for lots more soon.
@evan@mike thanks for helping to make this happen through your work on #ActivityPub. This standard is well on its way to making the online world better by bringing us all back to the promise of interoperability. The implementation was a bit easier than we expected and well worth the effort. I highly recommend federation for any product with a social graph.
@eloquence
Just having an instance or account on fediverse does not qualify an organization as fediverse-friendly. Medium is not fediverse-friendly because:
their content cannot be accessed via fediverse protocols
their content cannot be accessed via RSS or Atom
Also content being behind login wall is an annoying thing. I personally have zero respect for contents published there. Medium is getting content for free but they cannot be accessed openly and need logging in (i.e profiling).
@eloquence
If you are happy to use their service, that is totally fine and I hope you enjoy their platform, but please don't sugarcoat and call them what they are not.
Our personal choice is personal, true and respectful, but facts are facts and they cannot and should not be altered.
The big problem with Tesla that this article misses completely is that many of Tesla's most enthusiastic customers (like I once was) no longer want to support a person who is actively promoting hateful conspiracy theories and providing nazis and Russians with a platform to disrupt the upcoming U.S. election.
@mike@ac I would say it's priced in with the decline in market share... Which will only accelerate outside the US with the emergence of BYD and other Chinese EV manufacturers.
The European commission might establish tariffs for these Chinese manufacturers (akin to the US). But in order to be effective these might need to be as high as 55%. Which a) is unrealistic and b) shows how cheap EVs might become in the next few years.
Very soon in Flipboard I will be able to follow @Gargron who is on Mastodon and @mosseri who is on Threads and @dansup who is on PixelFed. And I will be able to see, like and reply to any of their posts. And they will be able to see my replies and follow me from whatever app they're using. And anyone else who is following one of the three of us will be able to see our activity from whatever app they're using in the Fediverse. This is how things should be.
@mike
Something as contentious as seeing Threads content should be by consent, which means opt-in not opt-out blocking which is hard to find in the web UI. I tried more than once in the past and gave up, so this move by de facto forces users to see content controlled by the corporation that was for many the reason they built or came to the fediverse to get away from.
@mike
It's about more than connection. It's about content too, and most of all culture. There are many reasons to exclude #Threads, #Medium and their like.
Most of those reasons are why the fediverse exists in the first place and why many people came here.
That so many, especially admins and indeed Eugen ignore them is a mystery to me. They make #Meta's job so much easier than it needs to be.
This is a really big deal. Soon anyone on Flipboard will be able to discover, follow and engage with Ghost newsletter authors and readers directly. More content. More people. Same app.
@gabriel the big difference will be that Flipboard and Ghost users can see and engage with each other once they support #activitypub. It’s kinda like two way RSS.
This is a must watch video if you haven't already seen it. This video uses Uber as a great example of a broader trend that really does need to be checked by users and government. RE: Uber, it's not just a ripoff these days it's also become a terrible experience. I was recently in NYC and found that using cabs are AMAZING compared to trying to use Uber. Don't have to launch an app, don't have to deal with inaccurate wait times, a fraction of the cost, etc. Just raise your hand and get in. Just go to the taxi line at JFK and get in.
Here's a round up of the first season of Dot Social. It's been incredible to dive deep into the fediverse with some of the people who are shaping its future.
This is not surprising. I used to love Tesla. But now Elon is destroying the Tesla brand and burning thru all the customer goodwill they earned back in the Model S days. I bought the model S in 2015 and it is still going strong. It isn’t just the best car I’ve ever owned, it’s one of the top 3 products I’ve ever purchased. Sadly I won’t be buying another.
This is a pretty comprehensive look into the work Flipboard is doing in the fediverse, why we're doing it, and how it can benefit people and publishers.
While I generally agree with the points in this article I think Tesla has also massively suffered because many people no longer want to support a conspiracy theorist who is actively parroting Russian and KKK talking points.
I thought the concerns about Boeing were overblown. Then I watched the John Oliver piece on Boeing in which he details the damage that Boeing's merger with MD did to their culture and how the creation of the 737 max was managed. I will no longer fly on that plane.
