The Harvard protestors bravely stood up for freedom and justice for all.

The Harvard faculty steadfastly stood up for freedom of expression.

The Harvard Corporation stands for genocide.

Here’s the thing: By sharing &udm=14 and udm14.com, you are making it harder for Google to further enshittify its search offering.

Collectively, we are putting sunlight on something they want to get rid of. It makes all of us search watchdogs.

One thing Mastodon (or a fork) could do to win some users over from Bluesky, is support taking your account private. It's wild that X and Threads are the only big post-Twitter microblogging platforms that allow this.

@misc I don't know very much at all, but that sounds extremely dicey to implement in ActivityPub since other forks and systems could just ignore the changed flag.

Maybe I'm wrong, but since doing a wholesale "going private" move is so frequently used when shit gets super hostile, it seems like it would be important to bulletproof in ways that…may not be available? Idk.

This weekend of May 17th-19th, what's going on, ? What's the can't-miss event(s) you hope to enjoy?

(The Thread 1/?)

knizer,
@knizer@toot.boston avatar

Dear reader, if you've found this or past weekend threads useful, holler - especially if you end up at one of these events.

I curate these weekly threads, exclusively here for the fediverse. I'd like this subset of the fedi to grow beyond ~12 bostonians shouting about how much we love bikes.

Boosts, sharing local-ish events you're interested in, and tagging posts with help to that end, and likes just make me feel seen (which keeps me motivated to spend time on this entirely non-commercial project).

Be well and have fun out there, ! ✌️ ( 14/x)

This is a perfect case study in how LLMs (don’t) work.

Please consider carefully what human processes a systems like this could actually replace. https://toot.cat/@devopscats/112445057997076822

  1. CS / software education / developer training and mentorship needs to redouble its emphasis on •critical reading• of existing code, not just producing code. By critical reading, I mean: “What does this code do? Does it •really• do that? What is its context? What hidden assumptions am I making? How can it break? Does it do what we •want• it to do? We •do• we want it to do? What is our goal? Why? Is that really our goal? What is the context of our goal? How can our larger goal break?” etc.

I think is spot on. The culture has changed (and Apple doesn’t see it). But also Apple’s place in the culture has changed and it is just another tech giant. I would argue, though, that’s down to Apple itself, and its behaviour. https://daringfireball.net/linked/2024/05/09/dhh-crush

@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@jannem @ianbetteridge The weirdest thing for me was the doll with its eyes bulging out. That was straight up horror. There’s a cultural precedent for guitar smashing and paint exploding. That could almost be passed off as some kind of rock-and-roll ethos. But it feels like they went out of their way to be explicitly mean spirited.

The Fuck?!!!

When I was bridging Bluesky yesterday I was looking at his account thinking that oh, yeah, I’ll be able to follow him.

Jesus, this has me shook. He seemed like he was really settling in to be one of the most interesting and thoughtful older punk rockers. Like he owned his past edgelord bullshit and was enjoying talking about music and poker and recording. https://flipboard.com/@pitchfork/latest-news-pqu92e91z/-/a-2v8As547SQ-U9JxCI7RVZQ%3Aa%3A910329480-%2F0

As the Scientists Against Genocide Encampment enters its third night, MIT Jews for Ceasefire are holding a Seder. We are so proud to support these Jewish students and allies, embodying their values in the face of extreme censorship.

People around a table, drinking "wine" (or grape juice). One of MIT's main buildings is visible in the background.
