Good morning to readers; Moscow remains in Putin’s hands.

For now.

The Wagner Group has seized territory in Russia and is trying to remove the nation’s military leadership from power.

The UK assesses that the mercenaries are trying to get to Moscow.

@timkmak It’s a dangerous situation, but there are just too many humourous sides to it!

The reality distortion field better be at record levels next week because I still don't get this headset stuff. I'd understand it as an R&D side project to be ready for 15-20 years from now when battery/compute tech might be ready. But this moonshot approach of throwing tons of resources at it and shipping something maybe even this year? Just don't see it working out.

photovince,
@photovince@mastodon.social avatar

@paul Could be. But it’s also what I thought about the first ipad - what, a hundreds-of-euros device above my laptop for browsing websites?

It all depends on having a killer app -or apps- and websites aren’t it. Neither are games IMO though, for mainstream. As obnoxious as Google Glass was, I’d look more into that territory than a VR set.

But I also think of the lidars they’ve been putting in iphones and ipads. Not much use after a few hours toying… but done with a purpose, I’m sure. Curious!

OpenAI's statement on "governance of superintelligence" is basically "in our humble opinion you should regulate AI, but not our company's AI which is good, but instead only imaginary evil AI that exists only in the nightmares you have after reading too many Sci-Fi books, and the regulatory framework you choose should be this laughably guaranteed-to-fail regulatory framework which we designed here on a napkin while laughing" https://openai.com/blog/governance-of-superintelligence

photovince,

@Pwnallthethings “We think it’s important to allow companies and open-source projects to develop models below a significant capability threshold, without the kind of regulation we describe here (including burdensome mechanisms like licenses or audits).”

The surprising part is not that math grad students named Cox and Zucker would come up with the idea of writing a paper together just as a joke.

It's that they followed through after they became professors, and wrote a paper that was actually rather significant.

@paul Glad to see that even among Americans tipping meets with this much pushback. Get unionized, get proper pay - don‘t push it to the customers to outbid each other on who gets the best service (if loitering around in the shop waiting for help is called that) for an already overpriced product.

✨ We're redesigning the People Directory (https://fediverse.info/explore/people) to make it easier to discover people across the fediverse!

Some highlights include:
⚡ Open API
⚡ Improved search (combine topics, search by software)
⚡ More account data (avatar, header, html bio, software)
⚡ Faster crawler (add/remove quicker)
⚡ More results per page

Shipping soon!

Meta aka Instagram is working on a Twitter competitor that is rumored to be ActivityPub compatible.

If you run a fediverse instance (Mastodon, Pixelfed, Calckey and others), would you ban a Meta instance?

Boosts appreciated 👍

photovince,
@photovince@mastodon.social avatar

@dansup Not an instance host, but if I were I’d treat them as any other instance - by my instance’s federation rules.

It’d be interesting to know (and part of decision) if they’d support migrating off their instance, whether they push their own client (lock-in?) and if, where and how algo is implemented.

That said, I am hoping (and will advocate) that anyone in journalism, activism or who in general do not need corporate censorship or algorithms to avoid such instance as the plague.

feditips, to random
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

I don't think people are realising the danger the Fediverse is in.

The only thing stopping corporations and VCs taking over this place is that the Fediverse is spread out on many different servers, which makes it very difficult to purchase.

If most of the Fediverse ends up on mastodon.social, which is now a strong possibility, there will be nothing to stop most of it being sold to Musk or Zuckerberg or whoever.

The bigger mastodon.social becomes, the more likely a buyout is to happen.
