Animal of the day (016)

The Marbled Polecat is an adorable fur noodle of the mustelid family endemic to southeastern Europe and western China. Only about a couple feet long including the tail, these solitary animals live in dens and burrows, and come out in the mornings and evenings to find food. While they mostly hunt rodents, they'll sometimes go for hares, birds, lizards, frogs, snails and insects, and will complete their diet with some fruits and grass. Its eyesight is weak, and it relies on its well-developed sense of smell.

@djisin415 you just reminded me of something!

When I was about 20, I saw a yard sale sign that said “Tom’s Huge Tool Sale!”

I thought it was funny because Tom probably didn’t realize how it read, so I went.

As expected, it was mostly just a bunch of tools and I’m not terribly handy, so I didn’t buy anything.

As I was leaving, I saw a box that said “FREE” and it had a laserdisc player and some laserdiscs in it and I was SO excited. I asked Tom if it was really free and he confirmed and told me to enjoy it.

When I got home, I started going through the box and looking at the laserdiscs and at the bottom of the box was a Polaroid.

A Polaroid of what can only be described as “Tom’s huge tool” and that’s when I realized the joke was on me the entire time.

Nice play, Tom, you creep.

Anecdote about some bad planning and nobody checking with a water engineer restoring some habitat:

Close by to me they built a superfluous four lane road, with all requisite earthworks etc. They didn't take into account how the watershed and nearby water reservoir would react and unintentionally flooded a huge amount of desolate land. Land that had been swamp, but had been dried to make room for suburban development decades ago.
It rather quickly went from slightly soggy to perpetually wet and lush with every snowmelt, and now it's wetlands again!

Developers: we would like profit and more cars here, please

Some Mastodon tips I've learned:

  • You need a fit, young hunting party
  • They are not easy to bring down, so make sure your spears have extremely sharp tips
  • Ensure you have a supply line and pack animals available to transport the meat and pelt back to the cave
