Does anyone know what physical security lock to use with my #Dell XPS 13 (9370)? The specs say "noble lock" but doesn't say what type.

I tried an #Kensington N17 but it was too large (although, what I received looked different to the product photos so I think I received a knockoff of a different lock)

Who knows! I'm going to a conference next months so could maybe use them then

Now my email collection has easy prev/next links to let you iterate over them all easily...

Oh that's a cool collection!

Btw, the links are quite small and hard to click. I suggest adding the text Next/Previous, or making them into buttons with padding

Here's a similar thing made for for the game jam. It's even more impressive given how limited the UI API is for Minetest - this is actually done using the HUD API using the player camera movement to get mouse movement

Maxton, to cooking

Love this online recipe hack!
...

If you add “cooked.wiki/“ to beginning of ANY recipe url (before the https:/) it strips away everything but the recipe and organizes the ingredients and method into separate columns.

Also adds a dictation option too!

#cooking #recipe

The same baked oatmeal recipe but run through cooked.wiki. It is now cleaned up and organized like a cookbook with ingredients in a column to the left and the method in a column to the right. Everything else is stripped away.

rubenwardy,
@rubenwardy@fosstodon.org avatar

@Maxton ah nice! I started making something like this, but I never got it reliable enough to release publicly. So I'm glad it exists

Whilst a lot of tech companies are forcing their employees back into the office, I can't even work out how to get into mine. I tried applying for a pass but never received it. A bit ironic

foone, to random
@foone@digipres.club avatar

Given the justification for openai and how it "can't exist" if it had to respect copyrights, I've got a new idea for a piracy site.

Step 1: we feed every frame of the movie into an AI and ask it to describe it
Step 2: we have another AI generate new frames based on each of those descriptions
Step 3: generate a new audio track by getting AI voice impressions of each actor, using the captions
Step 4: recombine. We now have a copyright-free version of the movie!

rubenwardy,
@rubenwardy@fosstodon.org avatar

@foone

This would actually be an interesting quiz idea - try and work out the original film after going through this process

Reminder to run your websites through Chrome/ium Lighthouse to find low hanging fruit, especially with performance and accessibility. So many personal sites have unlabelled buttons, images without alt, over-sized images, and [Read me] links

For example, "Read more" links are commonly seen on article excerpts. You should use screenreader-only text to expand on it:

<a href>
 Read more
 <span class="sr-only">
 of {{ article.title }}

You should definitely check your site with multiple tools, to catch all the issues

gamingonlinux, to random
@gamingonlinux@mastodon.social avatar

Just saying. Most sites are like this, you actually click through, and it's a loooong list of companies.

The web is terrible without adblocks now. It's everywhere, some sites it's literally every other paragraph, and then a video that appears over content and more.

rubenwardy,
@rubenwardy@fosstodon.org avatar

The latest version of this privacy stuff actually requires them to show the number of vendors on the first page. So "We and our 1332 partners" instead of "we and our partners". Makes this funnier

If you have a personal website: what platform, CMS, SSG, tech stack, or service are you using for it? Would you pick it again? How much technical expertise did it require to set up and make it your own? And do you have to do a lot of maintenance?

Once more – you guessed it – I’m asking for my subscribers. 😉

@matthiasott

I recently switched to see the link for my thoughts on it (and how it compares to Jekyll)

It suits my purposes much better than Jekyll, so definitely worth it. I found that it had a bit of a learning curve and required technical expertise. I've not had to do any maintenance yet. It being a static site generator probably helps a lot

Am I understanding this correctly, that by posting a link to my own website to , I can myself, because all the federated instances are getting their own link previews at the same time? I literally saw resource exceeded errors on my website in the minute after making a post.

rubenwardy,
@rubenwardy@fosstodon.org avatar

@metaning just interested, which resources were exceeded? Are the pages cached or are they being generated each time? How many requests did you get? Generating from a cache is much less expensive, it's a good idea for things like blogs

rubenwardy,
@rubenwardy@fosstodon.org avatar

@Edent @metaning

Nice article, thanks!

Re noreferrer: I implemented refback recently (a technique for finding links to your website where you monitor referrer headers). This wouldn't work with Mastodon even if it didn't have rel=noreferrer. Mastodon sending a webmention on post would solve this completely
