Words for hire. Canadian, so… funny-ish? West Coast. Foodie. Oxford commas are a hill I’ll die on. Traveller. Anti-Nazi, pro-science.

In 2015, I sold everything to travel the world for over 4 years. I stopped 3 months before the pandemic. 25 countries in the Before Times? Worth it.

I share photography, tasty things, & cooking tips. I'm also political, left-leaning. Victoria, Canada.

And I swear. A lot.

A complete stranger took my Kitchenaid mixer home, fixed it, & delivered it back to me, all for a $20 tube of degreaser and some thanks.

Repair Cafes are amazing, & they're all around the world — look in your community for RepairCafe.org by you for things you can't fix.

I'm so thrilled. It was a gift from my stepmom & my brother did an idiotic job of packing it when he shipped it to me, which broke shit.

Dude not only repaired things, but fabricated a new knob for me.

Most humans are good.

Suits was streamed for 3 billion minutes on Netflix and its writers were paid a collective $3,000 in residuals.

And that’s why they are striking.

“How large is it?”

“Well, sir, I’ll put it to you in relatable terms — it has the girth of 64 Canadian geese.”

“THAT BIG?”

“Indeed. Perhaps — I say this cautiously — as many as 68.”

“Alert the media.”

If YOU want to buy ESTABLISHED PLANTS so you have a plug-&-play garden with less of a learning curve, then go you!

You buy that shit, man! Plant those plants!

Insta-food-garden? Fuck, yeah!

Don't you let ANYONE shame you for taking shortcuts that get you planting & growing your food. However you get that hobby started, let it empower you!

These "plant seeds, not seedlings" people are HARMING the grow-your-own-food culture.

Whatever gets you gardening is a beautiful thing. Just grow it.

What’s happening to libraries is right out of Maoist China and Stalin.

When they come for the thinkers, you best be paying attention, because democracy’s on the outs.

I mean, that’s if you already have been sleeping through the terrorizing of women’s bodies and trans rights and racial oppression and all that jazz.

WESTCOASTERS, buckle up. From Oregon to BC, massive precipitation fronts and dropping temperatures could bring up to four feet (FEET) of snow to the mountains and two feet elsewhere.

Our mild winter is ending and shit’s getting real. Be prepared for a couple weeks, or more, of ice and snow in many regions.

Despite being posted on BLOGSPOT (!!), Cliff Mass is possibly the foremost expert alive on West Coast weather phenomena. When he sounds the alarm, listen.

Oh hey. Here’s the amazing hike I had at UBC in Vancouver.

UBC’s campus is so large, on the outer edge of Vancouver, surrounded by ocean, that it has its own RCMP detachment — city police have no jurisdiction.

There are 75km of INCREDIBLE hiking trails with world-class views just 10 min from some of Vancouver’s most popular neighbourhoods & 15 min from downtown. I highly recommend visiting, & seeing the campus & Spanish Banks Beach, if you ever visit.

The sun is blocked by a cluster of leaves & the forest scene is filled with a variety of of trees in all kinds of reds, yellows, and greens, the sky is deep blue and a railed path carves down the side of the slope
Sunlight hits a clump of golden mushrooms growing out of a nurselog in a forest
A shaded leaf-strewn wooden stairwell embedded into a hillside leads up through a dense thicket of wood where the sun dapples a multicolour autumn tree canopy

One of my favourite breakfasts this summer has been caramelized cream eggs with chives and Calabrian chili crunch.

It’s an incredibly •easy• breakfast — you can season the cream with anything you like. Takes two minutes longer than fried eggs and makes you feel sooo fancy.

I highly recommend the stovetop cream egg process.

Life hacks: When it’s a fall day like this and you have an appointment that’s a 15-minute walk away, leave 75 minutes before your appointment so you can enjoy the lost arts of being:

•a dawdler
•a lollygaggler
•an ambler
•a rambler

And bonus: Behave like a bump on a log along the way.

The storm here is so severe that the dozen-plus hours of 90km+ wind and waves have ripped the concrete wall apart, where we sit for sunsets and all the guys play guitar. This was intact 2 days ago. This wasn’t even the tide at its highest.

Winds are still gusting around 100km/hour. It’s been a heckuva day. We’re lucky — this is the “low waves” direction of wind. The other way, and we’d have even more destruction. #bcstorm #yyj

Hey, you know, not for nothin', but hunting "intellectuals" and academics to toss them from public life and to invalidate their life's work is KINDA SORTA a pretty big play by folks who are kinda genocide-y and who favour things like dictatorships that quash every bit of dissent. OH HI STALINISM AND MAOISM AND...

If you're "anti-academic" and "anti-intellectual," it kinda says a lot about you as a human being.

Me, personally, I think it says "I'm a gaping shitbag," but I may have biases.

This is why you are a selfish prick if you roadtrip in BC this weekend.

This is NASA’s real-time fire map for today.

If I seem tense, it’s because I get bent out of shape when my entire fucking province is on fire.

I’m fine. My area is fine.

But this province is my home and we are the climate canary in the coal mine. Canada’s forests are the world’s carbon sink.

This fire season will rapidly impact climate change for the worst. It will increase the Arctic melt too.

Some woman on Facebook called a city councillor a “race-baiter” for mentioning Vancouver has embraced “emancipation day” now in honour of the Canadian history of slavery, etc. (Good!)

I trudged out a link about Canada’s known past and, holy shit, did she go up and down on me.

Checked her page and of course there’s climate denialism AND “globalist” (but really anti-Semitic) cliches all over her page.

People who deny history are simply not living in reality land.

This post got a lot of buzz yesterday.

If you are new to gardening & have a small space, I highly recommend “grow bags” — they come in a variety of sizes. I use 5-gallon bags for herbs like oregano, thyme, etc, because they can grow abundantly.

For tomatoes, I use 10-gallon bags.

The herb and the bag are about $6, plus soil. My herbs have been performing well since 2021, so that’s a pretty great investment.

Get good quality soil, it helps!

It’s time, or will soon be time for you colder regions, for planting food gardens.

I’m motivating myself for some patio cleaning, so I dug up this photo from June last year.

My balcony is south-facing in Victoria Canada, just 5x15 feet long.

On it, I grow 15+ herbs, 3-dozen leafy greens (and share with my building), tomatoes, strawberries, sometimes cukes & peppers. I’ve grown carrots & peas too.

You can do a LOT on an apartment balcony!

Grow , eat better, save money. :)
